The spate of books showing how deeply Democrats understood how senile Joe Biden is (and was), raises the question of why they allowed him to remain in office even after the election. One answer is that they just didn’t give a fuck what happened to the country between November 5, 2024 and January 20, 2025. Another answer is that he hadn’t been running things anyway, so nothing would change. A third is that they just wanted to avoid their own embarrassment.
I think it’s mostly 3, but partly 2.

I try to read several conservative blogs by legal professors every day, since I am a retired lawyer, but sometimes I don't have the time. Here is one post from law professor William Jacobson's "Legal Insurrection" blog which I found helpful in understanding reciprocal tariffs.

https://legalinsurrection.com/2025/04/trump-imposes-wildly-varying-reciprocal-tariffs-that-arent-reciprocal-at-all-and-punish-friendly-nations-with-few-trade-barriers/

Legal Insurrection shadow bans commenters.

I mean, what a scumbag. This is akin to Facebook imposing censorship on Covid19 skeptics or Twitter banning the President of the United States.

Meanwhile economists are noting the 10-year Treasury rate is moving downward, because US debt is being purchased, meaning the cost of financing our national debt is declining.

"Legal Insurrection shadow bans commenters...."

?? How do they do that? Either your comment shows, or your comment doesn't show. A 'shadow ban' means that it would still appear to you, but not to other people - doesn't it? Is that really what they are doing? Or are they simply moderating their own comment space?

LOL. That's actually funny. No sweetheart. That's not how it works at all. "Shadow banning" is the process by which a website will "show" your comment to "you" but nobody else sees it.

In this way, you think you are commenting and having an impact and people can see you and interact with you ... but in reality, the website owner has created a false world for you to live in, where you have no impact at all. Your comment is seen by you, but nobody else.

That's why it's such an evil practice. Millions and millions of people are commenting on websites that are literally creating false worlds, and nobody ever sees what you are writing.

That is "shadow" banning. Because you don't know you are banned. You can detect this by using another computer or phone to check to see if your comment is visible.

That's what Bill Jacobson does to people. Which makes him an absolute asshole.

That would be pretty sophisticated, sounds like an NSA level project. To ban you it needs an ip address or a login. But if you don’t sign in you would not see your post on your iPhone, so you could catch them. It would only ban your posting computer, not an iPad or phones IP address.

I watch a lot of period stuff. I've mentioned Wolf Hall a couple of times. Today I had a 2003 miniseries about Charles II, starring Rufus Sewell, on while I puttered around the house.

I hope the BFA-holding Prof, or others on here, can answer a question I always have in period shows:

Why can't the set designers make good fake paintings?

To elaborate: In Wolf Hall and this Charles II show, there were scenes with historical Holbein and Van Dyck paintings, respectively. I assume the setmakers just printed them off on a high-res printer and stuck them in frames. They looked good.

But whenever a period show has to fake a painting of one of their actors playing a person of the past, the painting looks like utter crap. Blows out my suspension of disbelief.

And these are high-budget productions. If there was someone out there who could paint Rufus Sewell in the style of Holbein, I am sure the BBC or ITV could afford them.

So can no one do that? What about AI? (didn't exist in 2003, but definitely in 2024 - yet when Wolf Hall wanted to show Holbein's Tudor family portrait as a work in progress with Damian Lewis as Henry VIII, it looked like crap.)

Anyone? Bueller?

You didn't even read my comment, did you, Snidely? But I think I see what the problem actually is.

I never really noticed. Now I will make sure to look. I'm addicted to Sunday night PBS period stuff. (that said - I take hard passes on anything to do with Henry the 8th. Over-exposure!)

Never saw Dark City. Will have to check it out. Liked him in The Holiday, Victoria, and Zen. He's one of my role models for louche decadent naughty boys, along with Bryan Ferry and Dominic Cooper. Man in the High Castle is wild - he sort of looked like he hadn't quite figured out what he was getting into when he signed the contract.

He was good in Victoria. Tried and failed to get into Man in the High Castle. Dark City is good. Kind of a cult classic.

@peachy: Rufus Sewell was great in “ Cold Comfort Farm”

Thanks, Chickelit - I will check it out.

One is time. It takes a long time to make a good fake. The other is ability. Set designers are good at walls not portraits. So the most talented set painter gets to do the detail work.

Peachy said...

googled "Cold Comfort Farm"... that's quite a cast.
I see Eileen Atkins is in it - she's great.

Yes, it’s purposely hammy.
Vbspurs and I used to ham that movie up on Twitter.

Rufus Sewell was a great villain in The Man in the High Castle, playing an American who had become a Nazi officer.

I know Rufus Sewell from A Knight's Tale, where he was great. I saw Dark City years ago, before I would have recognized him. I'll have to go back and check it out.

Now for something completely different. My wife and I have real sparks in our relationship- ever since we first met. Literal sparks. As in we ground each other before kissing. ½" sparks between the lips are not warm and comfy. I know that all 4 of my sons and their significant others do the same thing. The SO's themselves have mentioned it. Curiously, my daughter has never mentioned it- so I asked her today. She and her husband apparently don't need to do that.

I've never heard anyone else talk about this. So a question- do any of you other commenters here have to ground with your partner before kissing? Or is it a really rare phenomena? Not just a wintertime dry air thing for us- it's any time of year, even if humidity is high.

Gospace, Kate...we always grind before kissing. It not only takes care of the ground phenomena, but also a whole lot more. (Your mileage may vary.)
