Non-citizens have been issued SSNs forever. Legal immigrants need an SSN to get a legal job.

I can't tell what years each bar represents but if you look at the chart at the link, the U.S. admitted 1.17 million legal permanent residents in 2023. So right off the bat there are going to be that many new social security numbers issued to them. Of course, everyone here on a work visa or a student visa that permits employment (most allow limited employment) is going to also be issued a temporary social security number. The numbers like they had a precipitous increase simply because so few legal immigrants came through during Covid.

"My" website and myself are not saying that at all. The website I linked tracks immigrants admitted as permanent legal residents (aka, those receiving a green card, which allows the people to eventually become naturalized citizens).

The primary evidence presented by Musk of something fishy with SSNs is a chart showing a dramatic increase in new non-citizen SSNs from 2021 to 2024, plus part of 2025. This chart showed 10x increase in these new SSNs between 2021 and 2024. One possible inference from that information is the excess non-citizen SSNs were handed out to illegal immigrants.
A commenter (who you all seem to hate) pointed out that in the base year in that chart, 2021, legal immigration was very low due to covid, thus temporarily depressing the number of new non-citizen SSNs. He provided a link to legal immigration (green card) stats up to 2023, which kind of tracked with the 2012-2023 numbers in Musk's chart.
The 2 million non-citizen SSNs in 2024 is still, to me, unexplained. The video has histrionics about illegal immigration, and statements about some arcane process resulting in SSNs being mailed to illegal immigrants who have been released pending a hearing 6 years from now (mailed to what address, I wonder).
Should I take Musk and his friend at their word about those 2 million SSNs? I don't recall them saying just where they came up with those numbers, and a google search has not revealed some press release from SSA.
