Trump walks out into the GOP convention: What was your reaction?

I watched live last night — did you? — and I'm rewatching now:

0:06 — Trump ambles out slowly. He's got a patch of white gauze atop his upper ear.

0:16 — We're seeing him backstage, where he can — with his famous and his unfamous ear — hear the crowd cheering. He looks serious... and tired.

0:22  — Lee Greenwood, live on stage, begins Trump's theme song — If tomorrow all the things were gone — and Trump raises his arm into a fist pump — the gesture last seen 2 minutes after he nearly died.

0:35 — He's mouthing some words, he waves, does another fist pump, looks down, gives a thumbs up, mouths "Thank you, thank you."

0:57 — I remember thinking last night that he looks different and I flashed on the possibility there could be a body double then estimated it at zero when he turned sideways and we could see his idiosyncratic ducktail.

2:00 — Ascended onto the podium, he looks happy now. He moves to the speaker's position, but he gives no speech, only a mouthed "Thank you" and another fist pump. He smiles for a moment then walks over to join a select group of family and friends. Not Melania, but Tiffany and the 2 older boys. J.D. Vance, Byron Donalds, Tucker Carlson. Lee Greenwood: "He is here tonight to show his courage, his defiance against somebody who tried to kill him."

2:08 — His facial expression becomes softer, gentler. He seems as if he might cry.

2:25 — From the lakes of Minnesota, to the hills of Tennessee — we know he is sensitive to music, and hearing this song again, now, must be an overwhelming emotional experience. Watch his face at this point.

2:53 — He dances slightly.

3:13 — He's calmed down a bit now and is smiling and waving.

3:43 — There's some restrained interaction with Vance after which his eyes swivel Vanceward, as if it might be possible for Trump to observe him unnoticed.

3:51 — Vance points at something, which seems to warm things up, and the 2 men chat. Then the 2 men point together. Pointing at something out of our view — perhaps at nothing at all — is a standard political gesture, and the 2 men seem to flow smoothly into this performance.

4:09 — The song ends, Trump salutes, the crowd chants the chant from the scene of the attempted assassination: "U-S-A! U-S-A!"

4:24 — Trump joins the chant. He's got a very wide smile, and again, I feel that he's holding back tears.

Althouse writes, "He looks serious... and tired."

That could be his pain meds -- not for the ear, but for the residual effects of three brawny men and one not-so-big-and-brawny woman jumping on him last Saturday evening.

Regarding the Secret Service agent-ette, poor Trump was entirely exposed to gunfire from his waist to his famous hairline because that SS woman is at least a foot and a half shorter than the minimum height a Trump bodyguard ought to be.

Something is rotten in the United States Secret Service. And it isn't just Kimberly A. Cheatle.

Conventions today involve preaching to the converted. JD Vance was clearly converted from being a Trump hater to his running mate, so the internal Republican discussion is long done. Conventions shifted from genuine internal debates and at least nominal contests to themed PR propaganda several decades ago. So, no I didn't watch.

I'm much more interested in dialogues between parties among those who open to working on relationships. Let's have Steven Crowder style "Change My Mind" debates to get a sense of where others are coming from, even when they have deep differences of opinion and little chance of conversion. Be real about toleration and cooperation, and not talk of putting "Trump in the bullseye" like our vacant puppet President.

My thought last night was”He looks like he knows he almost missed all of this.” He looks grateful, and more reflective than usual. Thursday’s speech could be interesting.

Quaestor said...

As most here know, SS Director Cheatle has a stated goal of replacing men in the agency with women. (Whatever that means. Someone with a strong prosecutorial background should ask her to define woman under oath.) According to her plan, the Secret Service would become at least 30% female by 2029. To accomplish that she's spent most of her discretionary budget recruiting women and encouraging the early retirement of the most experienced and skilled agents in the Service, who being overwhelmingly male make room for the less experienced, less skilled, and weaker females Cheatle is determined to hire.

Yeah. I was surprised, but Trump looked like tears were welling up in his eyes as he first came walking out.
He looked tired- as one would 48 hours after surviving an assassination attempt, then flying all over the country while preparing for the Convention and selecting his running mate. He looked weary, but thankful, if one can have a thankful look.

I completely do not understand the gut level hatred that oozes out of people on the left for this man. There are so many stories about how Trump deals with real people, everyday people, that you hear about. In fact, one was told by a union leader last night. Little things that mean a lot to people. Things that people remember. Things that Trump did before he was President. Or since.

You never hear any such stories about Joe Biden. You just don't.

Special bonus viewing of Tucker Carlson there in the front row with Trump, Donaldson, and Vance. Watching this on Fox Business at the time, it had to be Carlson's first appearance on Fox, albeit an inadvertent one, since they fired him.

"... that SS woman is at least a foot and a half shorter than the minimum height a Trump bodyguard ought to be...".

An easy check would be to showcase all the male SS on high level protection duty below 5'6". It would be a short to non-existent parade, I'd wager. FWIW the fitness requirements for men and women in the Secret Service are substantially different.

Real question, why is that allowed? Either the men are tested to a level valid for the job and women not. Or the valid level is the women's requirement and the men have to exceed valid requirements.

I understand it. Trump is an existential threat to the Dem party, the Deep State, the military-industrial complex and the climate-industrial complex. He’s actually for the American people.

And this time around, I think Trump is going to be successful. He’s experienced and will have better people working for him.

Two things will destroy the Dem party:

1. Exposure of the amount of bribes paid to the Bidens; and

2. Breaking up and exposing the Dem election stealing crimes.

“There are so many stories about how Trump deals with real people, everyday people, that you hear about.”

I’ve posted this several times before.

I had a young lady in one of my classes who was a mid-level manager at one of his resorts. This was before anyone could conceive of Trump running for President. I didn’t know much about him, but my initial impression was that I didn’t like him.

During introductions the first night of class she identified herself and where she worked. The class wanted to know if she had met him and what he was like. She told us that he visited every month or two and was greatly admired by the staff. From top to bottom. He greeted everyone he met, and knew many by name. Some he regularly sought out and had a running dialogue with. He asked about their families. He had respect for all of them. They all looked forward to the days he would visit.

She clearly admired and respected him herself.

Ever wonder why in the eight or so years that racist hateful Trump has been in the spotlight, the Left hasn’t dragged out scores of real life people who worked for and with Trump to tell their “stories”.

Me too.

It's "best practice" now to use a dupe in an assassination. There was a report out of Moscow that Budanov, the head of Ukraine's military intelligence, well, his agents, paid a local scrote $10,000 to plant a bomb on under Tucker Carlson's Land Rover in a Moscow parking garage.

There has been much to say about the women providing protection on Saturday - when I watched the RNC video again this morning, I didn't see any female Secret Service agents protecting Trump - obviously there might have been, but the ones surrounding him and in the camera view were all men, many large formidable men.

Trump looked exhausted. He hasn't had much chance to rest since Saturday evening. Plus, as anyone who has been through such a traumatic experience understands, there is a lot of adrenaline pumping for the first 24 hours. You can't sleep as you keep replaying the events in your mind.

In addition, the pain of both the gunshot and the hit by the SS agents were probably just last night being really felt. (If you have ever been in a wreck it takes about 24 to 48 hours for the real pain and soreness to kick in). Now both Trump's mind and body probably wants and needs to rest, but instead he is required to be front and center before the cameras.

I hope someone made sure he got some undisturbed sleep last night (with trusted security keeping watch).

There is a difference between being a leader and a manager.

In good times, you only need a manager to keep things running smoothly. Romney - who I didn’t vote for - would have made a competent manager. But in these times we need a leader.

And here's gullible imTay inway ermontVay repeating obvious Russian propaganda at 8:27am. Budanov is not a moron and did not try to assassinate Tucker Carlson.

"There was [also] a report out of Moscow" that the assassin was a Ukrainian, and it had a picture of his passport (first name "Semen", yuk yuk), but it was (a) obviously not the same guy, and (b) didn't even look like the actual assassin, but the long-haired Hapsburg-chinned idiot on Twitter who pretended to be the assassin early on. That's your evidence. People on that list that Tucker was on, including journalists, have been assassinated. Dugan was on that list, and they got his daughter, maybe by accident, IDK. Could be that it's not true, but it's not out of character.

So we will just have to disagree about whether a guy who just bragged a day or two ago about multiple assignation attempts against the leader of the largest nuclear power on the planet is a "moron" or not.

Once again, you can have the last word if you want it. My post was about the standard technique of using dupes in assassinations.

"i'm thinking The Powers That Be, MIGHT be rethinking their plan to have biden "tragically" die. . . ."

But although the funeral, etc., would take Trump's attempted assassination off the front page, having Biden croak right now just gives you Harris, which really doesn't help you enough. In fact, I think you can write off Pennsylvania and Michigan if Harris is at the top of the ticket and that makes things close to mathematically impossible.

What I have feared second-most (after the obvious Trump assassination, which came millimeters away from happening) was a false-flag assassination of Harris in the weeks leading up to the Democratic convention. Then you could leverage Biden out of the nomination by him saying that he was too heartbroken or whatever b.s., you'd have a ton of political repression directed at the Trump campaign and Trump supporters that courts wouldn't re-dress until after the election, and you'd be able to drop in hair-gel or Heil Whitmer or whomever you wanted.

But if anything happens to Harris now, although of course the media will blame Trump, Vance, Trump voters, white heterosexual men, etc., etc., it will be just too much incompetence by the Secret Service for anyone to accept. In fact, it will look like whoever is pulling Biden's strings was trying to take out BOTH Trump and Harris.

Now the Democrats, despite their media cover, are scared of Normies recognizing them as the source of political violence (assassination attempt being connected to the Burn Loot Murder riots of 2020, the riots at Trump's inaugural, etc.) maybe the Antifa paramilitaries have been told to stand down in Milwaukee this week.

Then the question will be if the Hamasshole paramilitaries are actually under party control, or if they will riot in Chicago in August.

Hopefully all the paramilitaries (Antifa/BLM, Hamassholes, AND the cosplaying jackasses in khakis) are going to stand down. That would be the best outcome we could hope for.

Did Budanov brag about Ukrainian attempts to kill Putin, as imTay repeats at 9:22am? Or has he been mistranslated, and did he just say that there have been three attempts on Putin's life? When I DuckDuckGo "Budanov assassinate Putin", the only hits I get saying the former are either Russian sites or unidentifiable sites repeating the claims. The only semi-respectable link was to a Newsweek story in which Budanov said that someone had tried to kill Putin while he was visiting the Caucasus two months after the invasion, and that the fact was not generally known. Location strongly suggests a disgruntled Chechen or radical Muslim, like the Dagestanis who rioted a couple of months ago, and there was no hint that Budanov was claiming responsibility. It appears that imTay has once again repeated Russian propaganda.

By the way, I've also read that there have been 40 attempts to kill Zelenskyy, and that most, if not all, of those were definitely ordered by Putin. The fact that Putin has murdered people in England with polonium and nerve poison shows who's more likely to be trying to assassinate his opponent.

The Russians followed Zelensky's motorcade around with a drone, and after he stopped to give medals to the valiant seaborne drone brigade in Odessa, well, *after he left*, the Russians took out the facility with missiles, and to be honest, we have been hearing a lot less about seaborne drones. Why the hell would Russia want to kill a fool like that? He's gold!

Poor stupid imTay inway ermontVay - still pretending he didn't tell us he was leaving and then came back lightly disguised - apparently doesn't know that the Black Sea Fleet has moved into the Sea of Azov because they can't stop the Sea Baby drones. Except for a few that have gone all the way to Abkhazia, the part of Georgia they invaded a few years back. Their last ship just left Sevastapol. Is he too stupid to argue like a grown-up, or is he in fact a paid Putinite propagandist who evades all arguments with stupid sophisms? It's impossible to tell, which makes him (paid or not) an utterly contemptible human being.

"I see Trump and Vance together, think about their biographies, and think, how can one not be in favor of the American melting pot."

Legal immigration, assimilation are conservative values. It's the left who thinks we need to remain in our cultural silos.

You really need to do your research.

They can't play groups off of each other for their benefit if people escape those silos, get to know those from other silos and realize that they're people, too.

Who cares if he has a bandage on his ear, that you would think this would enrage us is just dumb.

Well, considering the list of things about Trump that don't enrage you is non-existent, it's a pretty safe bet.

That comment is so illuminating. I'd hate conservatives too if we were who Readering thinks we are.

I didn't tear up, but I think Trump might have a little. He's clearly emotional in a few moments during the night. I think he's very glad to be alive, and very grateful for the supportive cheers from the crowd, who are clearly adoring.

Trump has made a show of 'famous for being famous', but I've never thought he was moved or driven by it; rather, I just thought it was part of his brand. Fame hounds do poorly when they lose the spotlight. Trump just keeps on truckin'. That's one of the reasons I have come to like his style, even though it's nothing like mine.

Once again lawyer Readering offers up some vague glittering generalities trying to prove some sort of point or other. (Unfettered immigration is a good thing?). And people wonder how our justice system got to where it is.
