Said Donald Trump, quoted in "Trump falsely claims he never called for Hillary Clinton to be locked up/'Lock her up' is perhaps one of the most popular chants among Trump supporters, and he agreed with it or explicitly called for her jailing on several occasions" (WaPo)(free access link).
But after his election, on Nov. 9, 2016, Trump did not lash out at Clinton when, during a post-election rally, a crowd began a loud chant of “Lock her up!”
“Hillary has worked very long and very hard over a long period of time and we owe her a major debt of gratitude for her service to our country,” Trump said then. “I mean that very seriously. Now it is time for America to bind the wounds of division. … I say it is time for us to come together as one united people.”

That was nice, but it's not how progs play the game. As DJT discovered. So, what has he learned? What have the nice moderate women of America learned? Anything?
This time is different. We need Mutually Assured Destruction on the Dems. Conservatives need to destroy the Dems. Go after everyone. Destroy them personally and financially.
This lawfare against Trump was the last straw. Yes, that's a cliche but it's a cliche because it is human nature and useful.

Hillary's crimes were real corruption. Yet I agreed with Trump's sentiments at the time; 'Move on to the important stuff'.
There really is a difference between the two sides.
The clickbait right calls for the elimination of rule of law in response to the elimination of the rule of law, which isn't going to work, as Trump points out.
He calls her “Beautiful Hillary” now. Such a liar.
Wait — such a lying felonious convict.
"No reasonable prosecutor..." would pursue countless obvious felonies involving running State Dep't business through a private unsecure server, no doubt to avoid FOIA scrutiny. When exposed, Hillary was allowed to choose which emails to hand over -- printed out! -- and her co-conspirators were given attorney-client privilege immunity, a third-party (Crowdstrike) was allowed to conduct the server investigation away from law enforcement's view, and then all relevant electronic equipment was destroyed and/or wiped clean -- you mean like with a cloth? Tee hee!
Professor, this is today's deep state bureaucracy. If you "sit out" this election, you are endorsing it, albeit with cruel neutrality.
"Lock her up" and "Drain the Swamp" was part of the 2016 working class awakening that lead to Trump's nomination and election.
By 2016 GOP voters realized the GOP had been lying to them and fucking them for decades. They were no better than the Dems and the unremovable bureaucratic establishment that had screwed over and targeted the Tea Party.
Hillary represented ALL that corruption. Plus she is a creepy, unlikable lying bitch.
Even if Trump can get past prison and voter fraud and win this election, he will not use lawfare to go after Dems; and he shouldn't.
Convicted felonious liar. There, that’s the ticket.
When Trump got elected in 2016, he immediately reached accross the aisle to GOPe and the Democrats. Remember how he wanted to make a deal on DACA? And pass an infastructure bill? Or offered Mittens the Secretary of State Job?
All got in return was abuse, insults, and GOPe and Democrats trying to get rid of Trump through a silent coup. Hillary claiming Trump was a Russian agent. Russiagate, Comey spying on him. Illegal wiretaps. Remember McCain lying and saying "Russiagate would be worse than Watergate"? Not to mention rigging a process crime against General Flynn. And then claiming trump praised Nazis.
And they've never stopped attcking and lying about him. Or trying to destroy Trump via Lawfare.
“If you "sit out" this election, you are endorsing it, albeit with cruel neutrality.”
No she is not.
Trump and the Clintons were friends.
He did her a huge favor by dropping her illegal and corrupt use of a Private Server - that she used in secret while secretary of State to service her private Clinton coffers. Including Russian uranium deals. Secret deals that flooded money to Clinton Foundation coffers. Their private charity that doesn't do much of any actual charitable giving. It's just a slush fund for their jet set lifestyle. The lifestyle all dems demand as so-called public servants.
Trump probably thought by dropping the DOJ going after her - that would save him some trouble.
Nope. Wrong. Dumb.
Hillary and her mob paid for the fake dossier that was used to bog Trump down with the Russia Russia Maddow lies for most of his presidency.
I read the article. It seems that he is literally correct, he never said "Lock her up." Once again, his opponents in the DNC Media have to take a suggestion and a hint from him or reword his plain statements ("She should be in jail") to claim he "joined in the chants," which he never did. She should have been prosecuted for lying to the FBI and destroying devices under subpoena, but she was and possibly still is "above the law" so to speak. Huma should also be a convicted felon.
What a difference a few years and an R after your name make, right? Comey said that prosecuting her would have been "election interference." Anyone on the Left saying that now about the Kangaroo Proceedings?
Ah, I see they are dredging up "Trump falsely claims..." again. They must think he is going to win. Funny how we never hear "Biden falsely claims..." even though you could use if every single day since he has been in office.
He wasted that graciousness on a despicable AWFL Party leader who returned the favor undermining his presidency, cooking up a criminal conspiracy against him, and never once hesitating to attack and slander the man. She's a typical crooked democrat party scumbag and should be up on the scaffold in the public square.
Trump's dropping Hillary's illegal actions was a big mistake. I said so at the time - and was furious over it. Got a big "meh" - from his super fans. why - it's another 3-d chess move!
Trump did say (to Hillary) in one debate "Because you'd be in jail."
"Because You'd be in Jail"
So who was upholding the tradition of peaceful transfer and who is breaking norms now? It really does not seem to be what all the Leftists predicted would happen. In fact it appears the outcomes are the exact opposite of all the Chicken Littling we endured for the last 9 years.
How strange. Now WHO is calling for WHOM to be locked up?
“No she is not.”
Correct. Besides — and this is a little “inside baseball” as they say — You want to persuade her to see and do things your way? Clean hands, smart gentle words, and model keeping your own eyes on the trail ahead.
I noticed this trick last week, apparently the memo has gone out on the use of the world 'falsely', replacing the longer 'claims without evidence'. It's more direct, more damaging, I guess. I noticed it first on NPR the day after the verdict, when some conservative dared to have an opinion. NPR then immediately characterized the opinion as something being said 'falsely'. I thought, 'wait a minute !', and then they did it again a few minutes later, on another story.
It's what the Censorship Industrial Complex is doing now, getting out in front of facts and opinions with a heavy hand, making sure you know up front what the warning labels say, instead of simply airing quotes and covering the dialog of public figures, as some quaint kind of, ya know, Free Speech thingie.
Remember how he wanted to make a deal on DACA? And pass an infastructure bill? Or offered Mittens the Secretary of State Job?
Actually, I remember he claimed all these things, but never bothered to follow up on them (along with replacing Obamacare with something cheaper).
He never offered Romney Secretary of State. He interviewed him, but anyone who believes he would have actually offered him the job is seriously deluded.
Aggie - 100%
"The Censorship Industrial Complex."
The same creepy in-unison lock-step leftist media language.
James Comey said that Hillary's gross negligence in handling classified data was not prosecutable because she had no intent to spill said classified data. He lied. A security clearance comes with an obligation to protect classified data. Not caring to protect classified data is prosecutable. She didn't give a rat's ass about protecting it and deliberately spilled it to advance her corrupt designs.
I'd be spending 40-years at Ft. Leavenworth, KS if I had done what she did. Comey protected her. It's nice to be part of the deep state.

Even if Trump wanted to...do you really think the DOJ and FBI would follow orders to pursue and prosecute Hillary? That's just not reality. That's a fantasy.
The IMMEDIATELY went after Trump. Russian collusion, the promoted and used the fake Steele dossier for FISA warrants.
What are you more interested in, vengeance or peace? I'll take no new wars, ending the slaughter in Ukraine, and the southern border put back under control.
It's like when Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a donkey. The Jews were pissed he wasn't there to slaughter Romans.
It was campaign rhetoric. We used to understand the difference between bluster and threat.
Gusty - Trump should keep his campaign promises. He broke many of them.
The clickbait right calls for the elimination of rule of law in response to the elimination of the rule of law, which isn't going to work, as Trump points out.
The right doesn’t need kangaroo courts. There’s plenty of real crimes to prosecute.
Trump may not have used the phrase "lock her up," but during one of the debates, he said straight out that he would put her in jail and he repeatedly said she was a criminal ("Crooked Hillary")
It didn't bother me when he said it because she does belong in jail, and it didn't bother me much when he dropped it after the election because it would have been a distraction.
But let's not kid ourselves about Trump's role in the "lock her up" chants. He encouraged them.

See my comment above.

He knows how to work the crowd. But WaPo is lying about him "leading the crowd in chants of lock her up." It's not true. Those weren't his words. As you note he was careful to say she SHOULD be in jail, but he never said HE would have her prosecuted.
Trump is no Alvin Bragg.
BREAKING: Trump did not lock up a political opponent when he had the power to do so.
Of all the things to lie about — he’s going full on Trump….
If Trump goes to prison before he becomes president this would be best case.
He is naturally a deal maker. These people will never be anything other than a threat to our freedom. We need them destroyed and he cannot let them go.

No, Mike. Trump did of course really say "Lock her up." I don't think that even you will be surprised by that. It seemed as though you were a bit amused at the prospect that just maybe, technically, Trump didn't actually say it even though it became -- "literally", as you say -- a trademark chant of his campaign in 2016.
It is an interesting point that Mike raises. Certainly not because there is any truth in his comment, but rather because he is exemplifying a peculiarly Trumpian way of eliding an obvious Trump falsehood. So yeah; Trump called out to "lock her up."
Trump on Oct. 10, 2016: "Lock her up is right."
Trump on Oct. 14, 2016: "For what she’s done, they should lock her up."
Trump on Jan. 9, 2020: "You should lock her up, I'll tell you."
Mike's comment is worth looking at more closely. Not because it is true, but rather because it is such classic Trumpian elusion.
Look it all up. Look at the new CNN video of Trump saying it repeatedly, presiding happily over the massed chants.
This is the kind of Trump story I love. Nothing about feelings, or emotions, or Trump's communication levels with common folks. Just a straight, narrow question of whether, and how, and why, Trump is lying.

He NEVER promised to lock Hillary up, and the "you'd be in jail" was hilarious one liner to counter her claims Trump could not be trusted to executed the laws of the land. It was a burn. It simply fit with "Crooked Hillary".
I never expected Trump to lock Hillary up. On the scale of universal justice and karma it would be nice to see her get what she deserves.
Trump beating Hillary and preventing her from becoming the first female President of the United States eats her inside every single day. She thought she was waltzing in. It was her turn.
Jail time would be nothing compared to that sentence Trump imposed upon her.
A 2024 Trump in the White House will eat the asses of these corrupt Democrats more than anything a prosecutor would do to them.
If I took secured files off the networks that Hillary did and deleted files like Hillary did I would be in jail forever.
There are people in jail for a thousandth of what she did.
She belongs in jail.
Period.
BREAKING: Trump did not lock up a political opponent when he had the power to do so.
U.S. Presidents do not have that power.
Well, not until the Soviet Democrats created that power for themselves.
Althouse sitting it out isn't going to lose any Trump votes but it will give potential Biden voters a graceful option. More power to you.
If he said "Lock her up" in a way to egg on his supporters, doubtless that little audio clip would have been produced. I'm guessing it's being manufactured now by the "Journalists" at the NYTimes. Maybe they can get a Pulitzer from it.
He had to replace comey and he needed to replace yates
They should have locked her up. In the cell next to James Comey.
Explicitly? Then WaPo should be able to provide the direct quotes. The ones they provided show him agreeing with the crowd, as he claimed to Fox News. I accept it was part of his campaign in 2016, but then accept Trump also gave the leniency. Trump is the hypocrite here, because he was prosecuted and Hillary wasn’t. The hypocrisy is, as noted above, “no reasonable prosecutor” was used to give Hillary and most recently Biden a free pass, maybe even Cohen for embezzlement, yet Trump got a misdemeanor turned into a felony based on charges not previously prosecuted.
WaPo and Trump’s attempt to thread needles reminds me of Bill Maher trying to pretend that Hillary never contested the results of the 2016 election, yet there are plenty of quotes of her, even this year, claiming the 2016 election was illegitimate. And those that pretend only Trump took it as far as he did simply ignore the efforts of the Hillary campaign to question the role of electors to be faithful to the state’ appointing them to the electoral college.
Mr. Forward,
Good eye.
Tip of the hat on fact-checking this particular Trump lie:
Aaron Blake (WaPo) on X.
CNN.
Forbes.
Fantastically delicious 2020 video.
Yes she actually destroyed subpoenaed documents illegally possesed classified documents et al
So, Trump didn't demand to lock her up, not even to lock up the presidential candidate, by rather an echo a la politics cum JournoLism.
Inferential JournoLism through projection, now displacement in a flurry of damage control.
That was his first mistake. The left never forgets and always attacks no matter what. They want power and nothing or NOBODY is going to stop them from fundamentally transforming America into a shithole.
It didn't stop the left from making up fake hoaxes to try to bring him down, and it won't stop now. They have a job to do, and that is to finish destroying what is left of America.

THIS^^^ 100% THIS^^^
Who cares what he said. The case against Hillary was a slam dunk and he didn't pursue it. He should have appointed Christie as AG. Christie would have nailed her.
so rosenstein replaced yates, continued the bogus fisa surveillance, did force out comey, and thanks to pat fizgerald, he conjured up the memo that brought mueller into the picture,
It would be amusing (if it didn't seem to lead to impeachments and now a criminal conviction) to consider how the left always takes what is clearly Trump rhetoric, as essentially import-free as any other speech mannerism like "no joke!" and "c'mon, man!" as "LIES! LIES!!" while when their side's guys lie about something actually substantive, such as, oh, "if you like your doctor you can keep your doctor"... crickets.
Chuck the slime slides into the conversation to elide what I said, with these gems:
Trump on Oct. 10, 2016: "Lock her up is right."
Trump on Oct. 14, 2016: "For what she’s done, they should lock her up."
Trump on Jan. 9, 2020: "You should lock her up, I'll tell you."
These support rather than refute my point, especially the last two where he passively supports the notion that Hillary should be prosecuted. Each of the "examples" from Chuckles are RESPONSES to the chant.
I said very clearly:
It seems that he is literally correct, he [Trump] never said "Lock her up."
Yes those words were included in his response, but he did not lead the chants, as I made clear:
Once again, his opponents in the DNC Media have to take a suggestion and a hint from him or reword his plain statements ("She should be in jail") to claim he "joined in the chants," which he never did.
I stand correct. He never did join in the chants. Take your lawyerly semantics elsewhere. My meaning was clear to anyone with common sense and a lack of TDS.
Of course unlike Pedo Pete (who Chucklet of course supports) Trump never interfered in the execution of DOJ business and sicced his AG on Hillary, which Biden has clearly done with Garland, according to Jack Smith's own grand jury transcripts and many many White House meetings. Like Leftists everywhere, it's all projection with these cucks.
Well there you go, Mike. That certainly clears it all up.
Like Charlottesville. Donald Trump at his candid, articulate, thoughtful, reflective best.

Maybe, in an more honest world, he shouldn't.
However, I'd be happy for Trump to hire a whole bunch of lawyers and prosecutors to go after every senator, representative and higher-up in every government organization, tying them up for 4 years. At least they could then leave us alone.
Trump says “lock her up” repeatedly.
It’s odd that the Left pretends Trump wasn’t president for four years.
He didn’t impose a dictatorship.
The Left is insane & stupid.
Bonus video.
Trump’s own words about allowing a person under felony investigation to run for president.
this is why they had conjured up the russia hoax through marc elias paying off steele, why they hid stefan halpers role in the matter, as well, why they tried to force nunes out of congress,

Dave, I don't think you meant to say "mutually"!

He never offered Romney Secretary of State. He interviewed him, but anyone who believes he would have actually offered him the job is seriously deluded.
People are always quibbling over word meanings on the internet. "Offer" lets argue over that word. LOL.
Go read Romney's recent biography. Trump could have told Mittens to go to hell given Romney stabbed him in the back and wanted someone to run 3rd party in 2016 to help electe Hillary. instead he set up an interview with Mittens for Sec of State. Mittens decided to issue a whole list of absurd "conditions" (after talking to GW Bush). For example, oNly Mittens could hire and fire State Department Employees. And no major Foreign policy decisions could be made without Mittens input and approval.
So Trump called it off and hired Tillerson. Thank God he did, because Romney would've been leaking to the FBI and Mueller and trying to get all the Cabinet Members to invoke the 25th Admendment. No doubt Mittens would've been recording every Trump conversation ala James Comey!
As I've written here many times before, the thing about Trump is he just says stuff.
Interesting how the left focuses on what Trump may or may not have said when it's clear as hell Hillary broke multiple laws. And she should've been locked up. She should still be locked up.
But I suppose this latest distraction beats trying to come up with the underlying crime Trump supposedly committed.
"But I suppose this latest distraction beats trying to come up with the underlying crime Trump supposedly committed."
They got their conviction. Nothing else matters.
Jim: The underlying crime is that Trump defeated Hillary. He dared to interrupt her procession, and for that he must pay.
For he’s a jolly good felon
For he’s a jolly good felon
For he’s a jolly good felon
Which nobody can deny.
(Thx Dems for squeezing the last bit of juice out of this term, felon.)
The Washington Post article quotes several examples that show Trump is lying. Another one not mentioned in the article: in a 2016 debate, when Hillary Clinton said it’s a good thing Trump isn’t “in charge of the laws of this country,” Trump retorted: “Because you’d be in jail.”
Trump shouldn’t have mischaracterized to Fox & Friends Weekend what he had said about the fantasy of locking up Hillary Clinton even for some pretty serious crimes she likely did commit. It’s bad when politicians bear false witness or dissemble. But Trump did do the right thing, when he held government power, to not use his power to order investigation, prosecution and conviction of, without due process, his political opponents. Even worse would have been imprisoning his political opponents, as Nelson Mandela was imprisoned, or to have had his political opponents executed, lynched, assassinated or crucified.
I’m glad Trump didn’t do any of those things. And I hope, if he’s democratically reelected in November, even if he sits in prison, that he doesn’t do any of the things to Joe Biden, Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton that they have done and are doing to him.
Still, he shouldn’t have told a relatively harmless lie to Fox & Friends Weekend.
