Why have anti-Trump Republicans chosen Nikki Haley as the one who should beat Trump?

I see, in the NYT, "Some Republicans Have a Blunt Message for Chris Christie: Drop Out/Several anti-Trump Republican donors and strategists are pushing Mr. Christie to end his presidential campaign and back Nikki Haley."

Obviously, it's getting late, and it doesn't seem as though anyone (other than Trump himself) can stop Trump from getting the nomination, but why this convergence on Haley? When I click on my "Nikki Haley" tag to see what I've found notable about her over the course of the campaign, I see nothing I like. She wanted to require everyone on social media to post under their real names. Her idea for the war against Hamas was, bluntly, "Finish them. Finish them." She called Vivek Ramaswamy "scum." He called her "Dick Cheney in 3-inch heels." And she's talked about her heels repeatedly. (She announced her candidacy with the statement: "I don’t put up with bullies. And when you kick back, it hurts them more if you’re wearing heels.")

Googling "Why is Nikki Haley the best choice to beat Trump," I got: "Senate anti-Trump GOP see Haley as best hope to avoid disaster." That was published yesterday in The Hill. The idea there is:
GOP senators who don’t support Trump acknowledge he could win the presidency, given President Biden’s weak job approval ratings, but they view Haley as much more electable because she does not alienate independent and suburban women voters like Trump does....  They... see Haley as a candidate far less likely to blindside them with wild statements or sudden sweeping policy pronouncements that would become political landmines in next year’s battle for the Senate majority.
Looking through what I've collected under my Nikki Haley tag, I'd say she's exactly the person who makes wild statements and sudden sweeping policy pronouncements that will become political landmines.

The real reason for converging on Haley seems to be that Ron DeSantis flopped. It's just a matter of numbers:
“She has better prospects than [DeSantis] does because her numbers are going up and his are coming down. Usually, you want to place your bet on someone who is doing better,” said Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah), who has urged Republican donors to coalesce around an alternative to Trump as early as possible in next year’s primary.

I see "Betting odds show Haley now Trump’s top GOP challenger in 2024" (Las Vegas Review-Journal).

Trump is the +138 favorite at London-based Betfair sportsbook to reclaim the presidency, and Biden is the 2-1 second choice. Haley is the +750 third pick to win the 2024 election.

A positive number represents how much you would profit on a $100 bet. In this case, a bettor would win $138 on a $100 bet on Trump to win the election.

Newsom is the 12-1 fourth choice, followed by Michelle Obama and Robert F. Kennedy Jr. at 20-1. DeSantis is a distant 40-1 long shot along with Vice President Kamala Harris, followed by Vivek Ramaswamy at 50-1.
Trump is the heavy -714 favorite to be the Republican nominee.... A negative number represents how much a person would need to bet to win $100. In this case, a bettor would have to wager $714 to win $100 on Trump to win the nomination.

All this talk of converging on Haley... it gives anti-Trump Republicans something to do in the interval before Trump locks up the nomination. But I suspect that if all the other candidates — not just Christie, the one the NYT is poking today, but all the other GOP candidates — dropped out and backed Haley, Trump could focus his attacks on her. And there's so much material! Especially on the subject of war and peace. Talk about "alienat[ing] independent and suburban women voters"!

But there's also the simple matter of accepting money:

Yes. As I mentioned here she was an affable mayor when governor. Good at ribbon cuttings, kissing babies.

…I think part of the problem is woman running for high office. If you aren’t just another Hillary sociopath what does an American woman candidate look and act like? The big fear is to look and sound soft. Haley overshoots by a mile…

…the solution is to have taken an economics class or two and be Melania hot.

The pro-establishment Republicans show their perpetual Achilles heel once again. Nominate a "safe" but visionless candidate that excites no one and that goes nowhere. Add Nikki to a very long list of play-it-safe, get-in-line limp losers. Bob Dole, Mitt Romney, Jeb Bush, Ron DeSantis, Gerald Ford, etc. If not for luck and circumstances, add G.H.W. Bush and G.W. Bush to that list too.

"Why have anti-Trump Republicans chosen Nikki Haley as the one who should beat Trump? "

Because the anti-Trump Republicans (mostly Deep State RINOs) believe they can control Haley should she ever win the presidency. For all their strengths and weaknesses DeSantis, Trump, and Ramaswamy are independent of the DC insiders, and have their own ideas on how to govern.

I'm reminded of a quote from mob boss Johnny Caspar in the opening scene of "Miller's Crossing":

"It's gettin' so a businessman can't expect no return from a fixed fight. Now, if you can't trust a fix, what can you trust? For a good return, you gotta go bettin' on chance - and then you're back with anarchy, right back in the jungle."

Nikki Haley is the political equivalent of a fixed fight.

…and the money thing- history begins every election cycle I guess. Can we stop with the assumption money buys elections? No? If you count all the in kind from the media and the corporate virtue dollars and the third world bribe money and the taxpayer money Democrats used to beat Trump…how much dose that add up to- a trillion? They still had to cook the vote…

…A) candidates who attract money attract money because people support them and 2) elite donors have enough money to spread wealth to hedge their bets so rich donors is not equivalent to full support.

Rino's have coalesced behind Haley. But they really want no part of winning the majority and actually governing.

DeSantis is a much better executive. But he is a little scary, they are not sure he is controllable, and a little like Trump, DeSantis is a danger, smaller that Trump, but still a danger to all the grift centered in DC.

IF Republicans cared about the Nation, and cared about cleaning up DC, it is very easy.

All the candidates should right now, (2 months ago would have been better) drop out and get behind Trump. They should all talk about nothing but how corrupt the Justice Dept/Biden are using the full power of the Govt to jail their political opponents. Republicans in DC and States across the Nation should have a single campaign focus. Washingtin DC corruption, through lots of the Bureaucracy.

But Alas. Republicans would much rather be the minority than do the work of governing.

And people wonder why Trump has such a demanding lead.

Enigma does a great job of cataloging all the safe losers the GOPe put forward to run. (not win, nobody wanted them to win)

Kate said...

Sadly, the odds that Trump will pick her as VP are rising. She's this election's Pence.

Rich said...

Well, first of all, for a little bit of context here, we should start any conversation about the Republican primary by noting that no candidate with as big of a lead as Trump has right now has ever lost in the Republican primaries as long as they’ve been having sort of this modern process. So let’s stipulate to that. Trump’s lead in terms of history would appear to be essentially insurmountable in that no one else has ever done it.

That said: One cannot see how Trump could wind up the Republican nominee next summer. Surely the 45% number will crack and crumble. But it is hard to write the script on how that happens. Nikki Haley does seem to embody the coming political upset of the decade. She seems made for the storm. This coming winter and spring looks like a real tub-thumping American story in the works. If she's good enough, she will make it.

The GOPe makes it easy for voters to look elsewhere. They really don't seem to know how badly out-of-touch they are with their base, and they seem to be in denial with respect to Trump's standing among other candidates. I think their game is weak, and going nowhere. The old fossils in the party are probably thinking to themselves, 'We've done our job and picked a suitable candidate, now it's on to the campaign and soon it will be time for the Republican Voters to do their part,' as if it were in their citizen's job description as a work responsibility.

The era is dead and gone. The GOPe is becoming a zombie party. Voters on all sides no longer are accepting big-party politics, of the teacher's unions and Chamber-of-Commerce public policy-setters, and legislation being drafted by lobbyists for the enrichment of corporations and Congressmen.

Big Mike said...

At the time I, and a lot of others, thought she had made a huge, unforced, error. This certainly has excited the oligarchs and various hard core lefty newsmedia like the New York Times and Washington Post. But it does not excite the GOP base at all.

Nikki Haley is the safest choice. She is a woman, so she will get a good portion of the female vote and give Republicans bragging rights for the first female president (because, sadly, that's how it works). Indicting Trump for trying to overthrow the government will prove akin to indicting Caesar for crossing the Rubicon, and just as effective. Like Caesar..

a traditional check on a president is the federal bureaucracy, that vast apparatus of career government officials who execute the laws and carry on the operations of government under every president. They are generally in the business of limiting any president’s options.
The opposition’s ability to wield legitimate, peaceful and legal forms of power will already have been found wanting in this election cycle, when Democrats and anti-Trump Republicans threw every legitimate weapon against Trump and still failed. Would I vote Nikki over Biden? That used to be an automatic yes. Yet, if Romney is backing her, then I don’t know.

I’ve been reading and commenting here for over a decade. The host has received a lot of grief for her support of Obama over McCain and assumed support for Obama over Romney (I can’t recall if she ever noted her vote there). While I didn’t support Obama either time, fought hard for both GOP candidates, I recall her arguments against both. And they have held up.

Frankly, I’m embarrassed by my support for McCain. While I can understand a vote for McCain is a vote against Obama, I think not voting at all might have sent a message earlier to the GOP that they can’t continue to put up these establishment candidates. Romney wasn’t “The Maverick” and 4 years of Obama was showing his problems. Romney was embarrassing during the debates. I put in a vote for him, but he’s done nothing since to show me he deserved it. And still, the GOP didn’t get the message.

Maybe it doesn’t matter. Supporting Trump didn’t matter. I supported Cruz during the Primary, but the GOP backed Katshit, excuse me Kasich. Now with Trump leading nationally in both Primary and General polls, the GOP is backing not DeSantis, not Ramaswamy, but Nikki Haley who seems to have a very low cap within the primary campaign. If Trump is disqualified (regardless of how), I can’t say I’d continue to send the message to the GOP that politics as usual is acceptable. Likely if Trump is disqualified, it will be with the clear support of the GOP for that to happen, which would certainly lose my support.

Republican voters active in primaries are a small percentage of the American people. The fact that more than half of even them no longer support Trump is the bigger story here.

Haley versus Biden would be such a startling contrast between Beauty versus Beast, youth versus old age, charisma versus non-charisma that the race might come down to the voters looking at Biden's record, his platform, his second-term agenda against whatever hodge podge the Republicans are trying to peddle and then casting their votes based upon their interests and the candidates' programs. Look for a near landslide by Biden.

If the Democrats field 100 strong candidates for competitive House seats (and near competitive seats), then a strong turnout and showing by Democrats at the grass roots level will carry the national ticket to victory. The Democrats should build the coattails from the local district on up.

“She has better prospects than [DeSantis] does because her numbers are going up and his are coming down. Usually, you want to place your bet on someone who is doing better,” said Sen. Mitt Romney

1: We haven't had a single vote yet
2: Haley had one brief "tie" with DeSantis in IA. It's gone
3: Haley and Christie are in the same "lane": GOPe tools. Which is why they're trying to get Christie to drop out, in the hopes all his people go to Haley and she rises in the polls.
4: DeSantis is in the "I want most of what the Trump voters want, but I'm competent and will actually get it" lane. Which is why Romney hates him

Haley is the person that Trump-loathing women would most like to see knee Trump in the groin. So it’s mostly fantasy driven. Men politically dominated by their women—and I know quite a few—follow in lockstep with their betters. Yes dear!

I am generally predisposed to the idea that Indian-Americans are smart, having worked with hundreds in Silicon Valley tech jobs.

Haley is the exception...she is a mediocrity at best.

I've said this before. But I'll say it again. Trump will clearly win the Republican primary. His base will never leave him. They will double down on every criminal charge leveled against him. Then he will go down in a big flame of defeat to whichever Democrat is nominated to oppose him. Trump can never win the general election because Independents and Moderates will never vote for him. Never. Then when he loses, just like he did in the last election, he and his followers will scream ELECTION FRAUD and whatever. Just like the last election. Wash and repeat. And this will be the end of America as we know it today. Thank you Donald Fucking Trump.

I'm worried that if the establishment concludes that they cannot keep Trump out of office through the prosecutions or another voter fraud campaign, they will have him assassinated. There are too many deep staters that are at risk if he is elected.

NYT: A New Dem 'Operation Chaos' Pays Off for Haley
Let’s be clear about this. Nikki Haley has not personally solicited funds from major Democrat donors for her primary campaign to win the GOP’s presidential nomination.
But the Haley-linked SFA Fund didn’t turn Reid Hoffman away either, as the New York Times reported a couple of hours ago. The LinkedIn billionaire co-founder offered $250,000, and the SFA Fund said thankyewverahmuch:

She is WHORING herself out to the democrats.. Understand NOW why the GOPe likes her?
Whores of a feather.. F*ck Together

We have to remember who OUR CANDIDATE is running against. Biden? Even further into his obvious incompetency? Harris? Not a chance. Michelle? Gosh, that could happen.

Haley looks better all the time.

Can't separate Haley from Julia Dreyfus' VP, same ditzy serious-silly demeanor, mouthing of hardline platitudes, and 5" heels. I fear for us if "Haley (R-ino) vs Biden (D)" truly becomes 2024 choice

Nikki will NEVER be "my" candidate.
If she "wins" the nomination..
i'll write in for Trump. I would FAR MORE prefer another term of resident Biden than her warmongering

anti-Trumpers have united behind Haley.. she’s the one candidate who will decisively lose to any DemoncRAT

Seriously, What democrat (or independent) would ACTUALLY Vote for her?
currently, people MIGHT tell a pollster that they would.. But, when it came down to it..
What democrat (or independent would ACTUALLY Vote for her?

IF she got nominated, think of how "miss high heels" would ACTUALLY deal with democrat attacks..
By frowning and pouting and stamping her heels?

You ask "Why have anti-Trump Republicans chosen Nikki Haley as the one who should beat Trump?"

The answer begins with "well, they're more than just anti-Trump", and closes with "who else could they choose?"

Seriously, though, in all likelihood more "anti-Trump Republicans" (at least among donors and public intellectuals) support Joe Biden than any other non-Trump candidate. They aren't just anti-Trump, they are anti-plebian, anti-Tea Party, anti-republican (lower-case "r"), and therefore also anti-DeSantis and anti-Ramaswami. After Biden, Haley is a logical second choice.

Yes, the Republican party is (at the top, anyway) anti-republican. All elites are anti-republican, just as republicanism is anti-elitist.

So then, you're a strong proponent of cleaning up our election security and procedures so that everyone can be confident in the result. Right?

LLR-democratical lonejustice: "I've said this before. But I'll say it again..."

LOL

Of all the members of the idiotic Althouse LLR-democratical Brigade (Rich, C****, lonejustice), lonejustice has demonstrated conclusively he/she is the least capable. C**** has proven to be most twisted/psychotic and Rich is the most willing to simply straightup gaslight serial lie in gadfly-like fashion.

Lol. I'm trying to imagine a situation in which a Republican challenger to Trump actually won the nomination by beating Trump in primaries.

Who the hell thinks that Trump would ever concede an electoral loss? Primary or otherwise? Who thinks that Trump would not do everything, anything, to either win as an independent or else to cause maximum chaos?

It would be a delight to watch Trump lose, but I don't think it will be in this primary. It will be in the general, where the nation will come to grips with the stark and terrifying possibility of Trump being President again. With a campaign where Trump will be on multiple criminal trials and the vast majority of American thought leaders, cultural leaders, financial and business leaders and all sorts of moderates from both parties and independents will all be open to consuming the well-funded messaging that will be opposing Trump.

I can hardly wait for November of 2024 and the aftermath. And remembering that Althouse and Meade already went on record predicting a Trump "landslide."

I am probably not the only one who could not help but notice that as soon as Barron Trump reached an older child/young adult age that LLR-democratical Chuck lost interest in continuing his obsessive and clearly inappropriate postings regarding Barron.

I'm certain there is an innocent explanation for that.

I must say that given Mike Johnson is a much more principled conservative and clearly a much smarter lawyer than our Whitmer supporting LLR-democratical Chuck and Johnson has 5 children, we should all watch closely to see if Chuck's...unusually strong "interest" in the younger children of conservatives manifests in...unhealthy ways...along those lines...again.

Time will tell though I must confess I am not confident we will see any improvement in that area.
