The NYT obit says: "The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department said it had been contacted by hikers who had found human remains in the Mount Baldy wilderness. Dangerous conditions, including a series of severe storms, had complicated search efforts.... Mr. Sands loved hiking in the Los Angeles area, especially on Mount Baldy. “I must have been up Mount Baldy about 200 times, so I think this is a real favorite,” he was quoted as saying in “My City, My Los Angeles: Famous People Share Their Favorite Places” (2013), by Jeryl Brunner. “And I like it in winter. Winter conditions make it a bit more interesting.”"

Baldy can be a killer. I lived in Glendora as a kid and saw it every day. Many hikes to Baldy, San Jacinto, and Cucamonga. All treacherous and I never attempted them alone.

The Hiking Guy has a video of Mt. Baldy. There’s a section called the Devil’s Backbone. If one slips and falls there and breaks something, you’re dead.

That is such a shame. People should remember that even seemingly innocuous hikes can be treacherous. Don't hike alone!

Mt Baldy is great. I've hiked to the top a lot including midnight moonlit hikes. The view is amazing.

We live on a nearby mountain and nobody from below had any clue of what the snow was like until they saw it in person. His familiarity likely was the big problem as he thought he knew the trail but it was entirely different during that time. A few other hikers died in the same short time period.

Respect nature. It had no concern for us.

I blame big tourism... Should have stayed at home, shouldn't he?

I'm happy his family no longer has to wonder.

What sort of predators are in the Mount Baldy area? Bears would have been hibernating but mountain lions and wolves hunt in the winter. (But if it’s the dead of winter and you meet up with a bear, the beast probably awoke due to hunger.). Did Sands have a firearm with him? Did he have a personal locator beacon?

If he had a PLB and there was no signal then avalanche is a good bet. The search for him was called off due to avalanche risk.

HBTPFH: If someone hasn't already responded, the article said this: "The coroner’s office identified the remains as Mr. Sands on Tuesday. It added that the cause of his death remained under investigation."

We had a cousin who died about 10 years ago hiking alone on Mt Ranier in December. Rescuers saw his body from a helicopter the day after he went missing, but weather conditions kept them from recovering until the following day. His family is Orthodox Jewish so they successfully fought against an autopsy, but presumably it was exposure and hypothermia. Probably got lost or fell and got wet. He was an experienced hiker in the northeast, but Mt Ranier is a different kettle of fish. Reckless on his part, but he paid the ultimate price.

Big Mike, mountain lions definitely, and our black bears could have been active again when he went hiking.

Coyotes maybe if he was very vulnerable. No wolves. The peak is above the tree line and I've only seen mountain sheep up there, but I don't know where he was found. My guess is it was snow related and as there are parts with very steep sides, it wouldn't take much to slip and in that much snow to not be able to get back to safety even with minor injuries
