Elon Musk is "personally" paying for blue check subscriptions for LeBron James, William Shatner, and Stephen King.

The Verge reports.

Now you know who are the truly elite of this world.

The sportsman, the actor, and the writer.

Not politicians and journalists. And certainly not every sportsperson, showbiz character, and creative scribbler.

Just these very grand characters — James, Shatner, and King.

Musk tweets: "I’m paying for a few personally."

I'd like to see the full list. Or maybe not. If he shows the list, others will say, I belong in that set. But James, Shatner, King — who can say "I'm with them"?

I have to wonder Musk’s purpose in saying this publicly given that ending the system of special privilege (whether famous people wanting status or governments wanting access) was one of his stated goals in buying twitter. At least the old form of privilege, being available to everyone in that class, was a kind of egalitarianism. The new privilege seems completely arbitrary. The king’s prerogative.

The “full list” – as Musk has tweeted – is those three.

So for people with a hundred mil, Elon will comp them their check. For people struggling to pay their bills it's $8 a month.

The real question is: when this fails to get the mass enrollment he needs to fund Twitter, what's left on his toolbox to pay the bills? Ad revenue is way down from what it was and given that Twitter is small potatoes compared to other platforms, advertisers can ignore it and do fine.

Elon has delayed the removal of Blue Checks as if this fails to get people to pay he doesn't have anything worth $8/month value to convince them further.

I saw it as mocking them for not having the money to pay their own $8, but I don't hate Musk as some seem to do.

I can see why he’d want to pay these people to stay and keep posting. I hope he’s paying for @dril to stay on the site.

Elon Musk has a well-developed sense of humor.

"The sportsman, the actor, and the writer."

It's just so perfectly fuedal. Just like the era there are "those who fight, those who pray, and those who labor". Nevermind that of the three the actor would've been lucky to have a pot to piss in while staying outside the city walls, the sportsman would've been lucky not to die before 25 on a field in Flanders somewhere, and the writer would've been scribbling away in monastery...and the sciency guy and his team actually trying to get to outer space is paying for it.

If this is supposed to be taken as a sign of gentility, of advances in our civility bullshit, I am underwhelmingly unimpressed.

This is hilarious. I love what Musk is doing.

My understanding is that Musk, not Twitter is paying this.

He only has to pay for 3to put everyones checkmark in doubt. What kind of person is James that he would accept this when "people will literally die" (yes a real quote after losing their checkmark.

Shame on LeBron, ki g and others for not showing solidarity.

Go Elon!

I think you do, too. But, hey, he's gotta draw the line somewhere.

James - a lot of bball fans out there. Definitely not Cleveland, though.

I see this akin to Las Vegas comping their high rollers.

You incentivize those people you want to be seen in your establishment.

I assume these personalities have huge numbers of followers.

What Musk has not done is alienated his core customers...like Budweiser just did.

All 3 of them!

Excellent "analysis" Mark!

Yah, he’s mocking them for bitching about the 8 dollars. The best mocking though is the ‘This isn’t the airport. You don’t need to announce your departure.’ for all the ‘I’m leaving and not coming back’ tweeters…

Elon said he was going to let us see who was censoring us - I've been kicked off of Twitter and Facebook for bogus claims of "spreading nudity" for years.

That he hasn't done so is beyond disappointing

Steven King? King already has a platform, his own cringeworthy novels.

Cry me a river. I teach at a school that has free breakfast, lunch and dinner for every kid because at least 85% of them are officially poor. 90% of them wear $200 tennis shoes, $150 ear buds, a gold chain, a $1,000 phone, and drink a cup of $7 coffee every morning.

"Alyssa Milano is very upset."

Wait 'till she finds out she lost her blue check.

I think someone should create a "Alyssa Milano's Blue Check" account. It should:
- Tweet about how it's adjusting to life on its own after Alyssa.
- Follow Rose McGowan.
- The twitter pic should be it wearing a MAGA hat.
- Announce it's buying an AR-15.
- Have a link to N95 masks.

Shatner is the only one I have any regard for. And Musk, of course.

The other two should drown themselves.

Aggie said...

You know what Musk is doing? He's taking away their control, and it will drive them nuts.

Quaestor said...

The blue check is supposed to be a mark of authenticity, that the account with the famous name and the famous mug belongs to the famous person you expect and not some giggling neurotic posing as the celebrated personage. Fine. I see some value there, but who in his right mind would pose as William Shatner?

Lebron having the blue checkmark just means all of the bulls**t that James spews on Twitter is verified…

Are the lefties still crying about paying $8/month for something they want to use?

If he stopped blowing up spaceships maybe he could comp everyone.

Stephen King is not amused.

And yet he still uses the platform...

Everybody telling Elon how to run his business and telling him he can't possibly succeed unless he goes back to the old way (which wasn't successful either).

This quote from Citizen Kane is the most apropos:
Kane : You're right, I did lose a million dollars last year. I expect to lose a million dollars this year. I expect to lose a million dollars *next* year. You know, Mr. Thatcher, at the rate of a million dollars a year, I'll have to close this place in... sixty years.

Cheap PR for Elon thanks to Alex Heath and Jay Peters of The Verge.

A mutualistic relationship is when two organisms of various species "cooperate," each benefiting from the relationship. One case of a mutualistic relationship is that of the oxpecker (a sort of feathered creature) and the rhinoceros or zebra. Oxpeckers land on rhinos or zebras and eat ticks and different parasites that live on their skin.

Elon is the funniest, most well-funded humorist around right now.

What better way to call out these “cultural titans“ for being total cheapskates.

The arrogance of all these people from media and Hollywood, who believe they are “entitled” to a blue checkmark. Maybe they should blue check their privilege?

Ted said...

As many have pointed out, the main use of the "blue check" was to keep fakes from masquerading as famous and/or notable people. The benefit was to Twitter users -- who could be sure the Tweets were coming from that actual person (or their paid representatives) -- and thus to the company, as much as to the personalities themselves.

By charging for this "service," Musk is making an obvious point. But at the same time, he's making Twitter less useful, since you often can't be sure whom the post is coming from. (In that way, it's more like all the rest of the internet.)

Rocco: "James - a lot of bball fans out there. Definitely not Cleveland, though."
Very debatable. He came back from Miami and brought Cleveland it's first Championship in 52 years.

Does the term 'cut your nose off to spite your face' come to mind?

Who among us wouldn't pay for William Shatner, or plea for Crack Emcee?

It is just incomprehensible to me that Musk has become such a figure of hate on the left because he had the temerity to expose defacto censorship by the federal government in collusion with big tech. He was the golden child of the left until so recently, now they would do anything to destroy him. The man has transformed multiple industries and he is derided as too stupid to run a social media company.

Michelle Dulak Thomson said...

Quaestor,

Stephen King is a prolix author -- never did writer need editorial help more, but the man is editor-proof and has been for decades -- but that's basically where we are. Basically . . . well, I read Under the Dome, all two frickin' volumes of it, and admired roughly a quarter of it. The man can write, after all. But, for the love of God, can't you compress it a bit?
