"Did you notice Bill Maher did a 'new rules' that was all about toxic masculinity and then two days later Will Smith did that thing? I feel like maybe he was influenced by Bill Maher a little."

Said my son Chris, sending me this clip from Maher's March 25th show:

My response on watching that was: "Wow. That was very pro violence and for the wrong reason/I see your point re smith/And many people, especially women, supported smith."

One can't know if Will and Jada caught that episode of "Real Time with Bill Maher." I'm just saying that, watching the clip, I easily imagined them watching the show and then arriving at the idea that Will ought to stomp up on the stage and whack Chris Rock in the face.

Now, here's how Bill Maher talked about the incident on the new episode of his show, which aired last night:

"I just want to say to Will Smith: I got your back. April Fool's. You're a dick."

Toxic masculinity, toxic femininity, diversity [dogma] that denies individual dignity, individual conscience, intrinsic value, generally, is an "ethical" Choice or anti-religion (Antire) by most behavioral standards. As for Will, he misjudged the openness and resilience of his wife in the open, then the overreacted with the expected response.

Zelensky is a hardass? Seems more like he's a comedian who had to step up. He looks out of place in the helmet and flak jacket.

Maher fell off my radar when he went to cable. I don't think I missed much. I'm not saying he's wrong, but he goes on way too long and hits his points too hard. His audience seems too much like his mob or claque who will cheer at anything coming out of his mouth. Maybe all late night talk shows are like that now.

I think that this kind of analysis fails because of the setting: remaining in good humor while being teased is one of the requirements of the evening.

Is it cool for Maher to say the name of the guy Jada was banging? Will Will come after Bill?

It was hard to hear the name. I had to listen three times to make sure Maher wasn't saying that Jada had banged "half of Encino.".

Anyway, the guy is young enough to be her son, and if Will isn't making similar conquests or somehow getting comparable jollies, open relationship or not, it's no wonder he's angry.

When in disgrace in fortune and men"s eyes, a woman's glance is supposed to be balm. Such a glance is not supposed to inspire a grotesquely stupid act that will lead you into disgrace in fortune and men's eyes.....The martial spirit has led Zelensky to take up arms against Putin. The marital spirit--the toxic marital spirit--led Will Smith to take up arms against Chris Rock....There's a difference in facing down a Russian tank and bitch slapping some guy who's four inches shorter and fifty pounds lighter than you. Not every woman can see the subtlety of the difference.

Will and Jada could do a killer version of Macbeth. I'm not sure if Chris Rock would be more effective as Banquo or the murdered king.....Related thought: Ellen now Elliot Page has had a fairly successful transition. As a man, she>he looks credible and handsome. Still, I wonder what role she>he could play without pulling you completely out of the drama. Perhaps one of Shakespeare's cross dressers--Viola or Rosalind. Maybe she could play the guy who falls in love with Rosalind or Viola. It's going to be hard for her>him to find parts....I wonder who's the more bankable star Will Smith or Elliot Page?

When Maher was some official's son at NBC, Imus and Charles McCord used to hook him up with page girls.

It's funny how in America Z is being portrayed as a man's man "fixing things," protecting his tribe, when in Russia he is being perceived as a weakling, brainless comedian who is unable to govern and who led Ukraine into the current tragic events. And who are those women who want to have sex with him? Do they have a nose ring?
As far as Will Smith goes, no amount of face slapping will make him look masculine, but Hollywood is a different world. I say integrity is a man's best bet, if you are a bold and short man with integrity, you are already ahead in the dating pool. Will Smith is tall and rich but he shouldn't take lessons on masculinity from Maher.

Every able-bodied man sticking around to fight? I thought they were being prevented from leaving by that loving bunch of guys, the Ukrainian leaders and oligarchs? That's why the trans issue came up: you have to let me go, I'm actually a woman. Imagine this on the Titanic.

I never take lessons from Dogfaced Dwarfs on TV. And I doubt a millionaire black man like Will Smith would either.

Maher, of course, knows nothng of honor, or loving your wife. Nor does he have any consistent principles. Remember when he called the US Military "cowards" because they bomb from 25,000 feet? But now, he's cheerleading Ukrainian missiles hitting Russian targets and "plucky Ukrainians" droning Russians from 100 miles away.

Good thing Will slapped Rock instead of Bill Maher. Good God, can imagine if Maher had been slapped? He'd still be crying about the TRUAMA and suing SMith for $100 million in damages because he had PTSD.

Thanks for doing something else--watch Maher regularly--so that I don't have to.

Pretty funny.

He has "smartest man in the world" syndrome. always condescending. Pass.

I think the Zelensky phenomenon is better explained by his entering office from outside politics, rather than his degree of masculinity alone.

Someone who comes to politics from outside politics, even if a little corrupt and opportunist, is likely to have a different aversion to compromise or capitulation when it really counts.

Contra a life-long politician who is accustomed, as a way of life, to work his way up the corrupt political totem by following a path of least resistance, making him more innately likely surrender or flee when faced with outmatched odds.

I think Trump is another example where his newcomer status made him more steadfast in purpose against overwhelming insider opposition.

Hollyweird Values. Maher has decades of his own personal behavior to critique, but introspection has never been of much value to him.

If Will Smith had been influenced by Bill Maher he wouldn't have slapped Chris Rock for a standard Oscar-night joke that his wife didn't like. He'd have slapped Jada for the ongoing public cucking she's given him.

As everyone seems to've figured out, Will Smith's real--but forbidden-- target here was Jada. So he turned Chris Rock into the whipping boy for his wife. An ancient institution, with significant roots in slavery, is resurrected. The question needs to be put after each stage of the whipping: is Madame's honor satisfied?

What was the "wrong reason" you referenced?

If the Ukraininans were as violent as Will Smith, they'd all be speaking Russian. With a German accent.

That makes no sense, assuming you watched the clip, so let me guess: you didn’t.

200 years ago Smith would have approached Rock, slapped him with his empty glove, and named a place and time tomorrow for a dual. All very legal.
This goes back to the princess discussion, yes? The suitor, defending the honor of the damsel?

Ann Althouse said...

And by “that makes no sense,” I mean you don’t understand my point. You’re disagreeing with a phantom.

Is there a transcript for the first clip? There's no way in hell I'm going to listen to eight minutes of childish vulgarity. I mean, I'm made of flesh and blood. I had to bail after seeing the word "STUD" underneath Zelensky's name.

I didn't catch the naming of Mrs. Smith's paramour(s) in the schtick, and doubt that I'd recognize it.

Apparently Maher has baggage; I wouldn't know, and doubt it would make a difference. When clowns make clowns of themselves, they should expect ridicule from the other clowns.

His two guests were Heilmann (or his ex-pard) and . . . Tester?

Candide said...

I think it was a gallant act by Maher to step up and ridicule Smiths on behalf of fellow comedian done wrong. I am looking forward for other comedians taking on Smiths.

I see nothing masculine in posing for cameras and Zelensky has done nothing else. Maher went all mushy on him perhaps because there was a comedian turned president angle. Maybe Bill can’t help dreaming to be President himself?

From Wikipedia,
"On September 18, 2020, Rock revealed that he was diagnosed with a non-verbal learning disorder, a neurological condition that makes it difficult for him to understand non-verbal social cues."

If one can imagine an A list actor taking advice on manhood from the star of "Cannibal Women in the Avocado Jungle of Death", then yes it's possible Maher had an influence on what happened Sunday. I have a feeling Smith was getting similar advice from other quarters he has more respect for. Getting cuckold in a very public way probably had more to do with flipping his "be a man" switch than anything Maher said.

"Imagine this on the Titanic."

It DID happen on the Titanic.

Or... there were rumors to that effect.

In the movie "A Night to Remember," it happens.

Dave said...

I believe what Ann says may have happened on the Titanic, happened on the Titanic. I believe it because of...biology...though certainly I should qualify that I am NOT a biologist. Poison is an effective deterrent against potential predators and competitors. But poison has a cost. To conserve energy, a poisonous creature signals with markings to warn away adversaries and avoid the energy cost of making more venom. The cheaters with no venom assume the markings to get the benefits of the poison without making the poison.

There are always cheaters.

But what I cannot imagine on the Titanic is a man openly claiming to be a woman to get the benefit afforded to being female.

I believe men of the time would have thrown someone like that off the boat without pause.

Oh, and speaking of taxonomy and what things are and what they are not, you can identify a Princess if she has a $400.00 hair dryer and is a little concerned about camping in a thousands of dollars truck camper.
