One year ago [yesterday] at the Wisconsin protests: Althouse & Meade experience union thuggery.

There's a screed on the web:
We will hang up wanted posters of you everywhere you like to go. We will picket on public property as close to your house as we can every day. We will harrass the ever loving shit out of you all the time. Campus is OCCUPIED. State street is OCCUPIED. The Square is OCCUPIED. Vilas, Schenk's Corners, Atwood, Willy Street – Occupied, Occupied, Occupied, Occupied.
Interesting. All that "Occupy" talk, antedating the earliest manifestations of Occupy Wall Street. What do you make of that?
Did you really think it was all about the Capitol? Fuck the Capitol, we are the CITY... We have the numbers and we don't back down from anyone. We all know each other. We all know each other. We know each other from Service Industry Night at the Orpheum, because we're regulars at the same coffee shops, restaurants and bars, we know each other from the co-ops, we know each other because we've had a million jobs each (and we all worked at CapTel at least once), because we live in every shitty townie house in ever-changing groups of 2 – 7 people, because we are young and horny and screw each other incessantly, because we're all on facebook, and because we aren't anti-social, life-denying, world-sterilizing pieces of human garbage like the two of you. WE WILL FUCK YOU UP. We will throw our baseballs in your lawn, you cranky old pieces of shit, and then we will come get them back. What are you gonna do? Shoot us? Get Wausau Tea Patriots to form an ad hoc militia on your front lawn? That would be fucking HILAROUS to us. You could get to know the assholes on your side in real fucking life instead of sponging off the civil society we provide for you every single day you draw breath."
More here:
"Ann Althouse and Meade advocate torture, attack against nonviolent protesters, police-state crackdowns on citizens exercising their constitutional rights, class privilege, race privilege, and basically the full spectrum of assaults against American democracy advocated by the radical, revolutionary wing of the republican party. They are unkind, unChristian and anti-American."
ADDED: When I tried to post this last night, I kept getting the "conflicting errors" message, which I know a lot of people attempting to comment were also getting. I hope this means the problem is solved!

ALSO: The text at the link was partial, and it went to a page on the scribd website which now says the document was deleted. I've now updated my original post with the full text of the deleted document, which I had, fortunately, saved.  If you've never read the whole thing, try it. Here's the last paragraph:
If you have not acceded to our demands within a week, it is ON LIKE DONKEY KONG. WE AREN'T GOING ANYWHERE. EVER. WE LIVE HERE 100% OF THE FUCKING TIME. YOU CAN'T BAN MADISON FROM LIVING IN MADISON, BUT WE CAN SURE AS SHIT BAN YOU. WHO ARE YOU GONNA CALL? COPS FOR LABOR? THE CHICKENSHIT TEA ASSWIPES WHO ARE SCARED SHITLESS OF THE TEAMSTERS TRUCKS? THE NATIONAL GUARD? SCOTT WALKER? NO ONE IS GOING TO COME AND CRACK DOWN ON US FOR YOU. THERE IS NO CAVALRY. ITS US VS YOU ON THE STREETS OF THE CITY GOING AS FAR AS IT HAS TO GO UNTIL A) WE WIN OR B) DOOMSDAY.

I remember reading some of this at the time: fine examples of "If you disagree with us, you are evil and should not be allowed to speak."

My general line is "Freedom of speech has to include people you don't like and ideas you don't agree with. If it doesn't then you're not for actual freedom of speech, you just want a nice phrase to throw around that makes you feel virtuous."

More like" Shut up or we will hurt you and your family and your property".

Thats what the Union Label is: Threats and intimidation when you fail to toe their line.

I'm curious how many baseballs have been thrown into your yard and conspicuously retrieved since this little love-note was penned for your enjoyment?

Few, I suspect, because they are too busy screwing each other "incessantly."

Plus, they probably throw like girls and perhaps cannot reach your lawn from the safety of withing their ever-changing circle of radical UP-FUCKERS.

Firehand, I'm with you. But my line also says you must make an effort to speak. That's part of what's going on: leftists tend to think that raising the volume is important, because it gets otherwise silent people to speak up; rightists tend to think that they shouldn't speak up unless they have something important to say that others must hear. Both philosophies have merit, but not in equal degree in all situations.

No baseballs because the moron who made the threats was exposed, but, given what we've seen with the Occupation - as Ann notes, the capacity for it was there.

Luckily for Meadhouse, this was one Occupier without an Occupation behind him.

The twerp sounded like so many of the Left-wing churls seen here, hating Ann because they see her as betraying their beloved yet phony cause and jealous of her because she sounds as if she's actually happy.

Just another example of the over-privileged, uneducated, pseudo-intellectual slactivist bullshit so common from that side of the aisle.

"Yes, as long as it is admitted that the law may be diverted from its true mission, that it may violate property instead of securing it, everybody will be wanting to manufacture law, either to defend himself against plunder, or to organize it for his own profit. The political question will always be prejudicial, predominant, and absorbing; in a word, there will be fighting around the door of the Legislative Palace. The struggle will be no less furious within it. [...] Is there any need to prove that this odious perversion of law is a perpetual source of hatred and discord, that it even tends to social disorganization?"

That is some very threatening language and while some people may say "Nothing violent about it, it is just a metaphor..didn't really mean it!" there is no call for that behavior.

I never heard what happened after you got the police involved...were there any arrests made?

All qualities the Lefties hate, of course.

A police officer came to our house and took down a report on his notepad. We identified person who wrote the threat (though I've never put his name in the post).

The officer told us he was unfamiliar with the web but that the report would be forwarded to someone in the department who was. We have often checked on the case, but the police have never taken any significant steps as far as we can tell.

That's awful, Professor. I hadn't read your original post the first time around.

I just found a new phrase to steal--I think I'm starting to fall in love with Petunia, lol.

You know the person? That's even creepier & scarier. I hadn't seen that post before either, but I can now better understand why a few of your commentators are so combative.

Hopefully you know that isn't representative of the Recall-groups or Unions as a whole, especially not me as an individual! When I say I look for ya'll in the crowds during the protests, it truly is with friendly of intentions...

I've seen several of these "townie houses" when I have been in Madison to see my daughter. They usually have people outside 24/7 smoking, drinking, and whatever and they are always your typical Madison freakshow type of people. I have also had these types hurl insults at me for walking down the street, wondering if I might have to defend myself from someone who didn't think I belonged there. It can truly be a scary place. Thank goodness Althouse travels with Meade to most of the places shes visits to cover on her blog.

PS - re-reading the full post, I don't understand why you are calling this "union thuggery." The person making these vile threats seems to be a bartender who used to work at CapTel. Is this person now a member of an organized labor union, and was he (her?) acting on their behalf?

'cause otherwise the only "union" that is really involved in this situation are the police...are they the thugs you're referring to?

Now, that is scary.

Of course, no overt sign that the cops don't want to go any further, but their seeming lack of interest tends to put them down on the side of the Union Label.

Probably because those are the same tactics that the unions use or threaten to use. Therefore etc.

I don't believe you.
You're too adept at making excuses for those violent progressives you side with.

The problem Ms Althouse has is that she's more or less a public figure in Madison. Then there are those of us who aren't public figures and aren't afraid of your threats.

Ann,

Wisconsin is now a CCW state and pepper spray is abundant and cheap. If you aren't carrying a pistol and a can of OC by now, why not? You have no excuse at this point. The tools for your safety are available.

I don't personally know him, but he was easy to identify. He posted the screed on line under his own name. He's someone who was frequently seen at the protests.

Nothing has happened. No attacks made upon your person or your home. You know who did it. As a law professor, you have to know that cops don't investigate or chase down most of these kinds of things, right? The creep did nothing; you know who it is and likely where he lives. You're safe. And why is this anniversary interesting?

Years ago, I drove a friend to an abortion clinic and escorted her through the back door because of some aggressive religious protesters out front.

After she was inside, safe and sound, I picketed alongside them with a sign that said "Jimmy Swaggart Cares About You." (That was back when he'd just been caught in a motel with a prostitute.) The other side said "Robert Tilton Prays for You." (Tilton was being prosecuted in federal court for fraudulently taking $$ to pray for people and then tossing their prayer requests in the dumpster.)

The evangelicals didn't much like my two-sided sign, and a few of them surrounded me to try to cover it up.

But you know what? All I had to do was point out that I wasn't interfering with their protesting, I wasn't covering up their signs, and it was only fair that they not cover up mine. It took them about one minute to think about it and decide to act reasonably, and they stood down. That was that. No threats, no intimidation, no nothing. We peacefully co-existed together on the sidewalk, respectfully advertising our opposing views.

Those anti-Scott people you were dealing with at the Capitol, however, seem devoid of all reason. They try to quell, by taunts and threats of violence, any competing view.

What a technique. It makes them ever so persuasive.

Skippy takes his turn at whitewashing Leftist Brownshirt threats of violence.

Your cat's still alive, so no harm no foul, right?....

purplepenquin said...

@Rusty, I have threatened nobody and it is libel to claim I have. Please retract your statement.

And I really wish our hostess would clear up exactly what she meant by "union" thuggery. Other than the cops who haven't followed through on the case, what "union" is she referring to?

So wait, is Occupy supposed to be Guy Fawkes or Tyler Durden? Seeing some "we guard you while you sleep, do not fuck with us" in there.

Hey, Fen, do you really think that cops investigate half the threats that anyone gets in the world? Like they have time for that? In my city, they don't show up when there's an in-progress assault occurring and is reported. Althouse made a big deal of it in her blog, she knew who it was, and all the noise she made scared off the brownshirts. It all worked out. And so, why the big anniversary? Who cares!
