BLIZZARD OF LIES

We must have lunch real soon. Your luggage is checked through.
We've got inflation licked. I'll get right back to you.
It's just a standard form. Tomorrow without fail.
Pleased to meet you. Thanks a lot. Your check is in the mail.

Marooned, marooned, marooned in a blizzard of lies.
Marooned, marooned, marooned in a blizzard of lies.
Your toes and knees aren't all you'll freeze
When you're in it up to your thighs.
It looks like snow, but you never know
When you're marooned in a blizzard of lies.

You may have won a prize. Won't wrinkle, shrink or peel.
Your secret's safe with me. This is a real good deal.
It's finger lickin' good. Strictly by the book.
What's fair is fair. I'll be right there. I am not a crook.

Marooned, marooned, marooned in a blizzard of lies.
Marooned, marooned, marooned in a blizzard of lies.
Better watch your step when your old dog Shep
Can't even look you in the eyes.
You're cold and lost and you're double crossed
When you're marooned in a blizzard of lies.

We'll send someone right out. Now this won't hurt a bit.
He's in a meeting now. The coat's a perfect fit.
It's strictly fresh today. Service with a smile.
I'll love you darling 'till I die. We'll keep your name on file.
Marooned, marooned, marooned in a blizzard of lies.
Marooned, marooned, marooned in a blizzard of lies.
Walk on, walk on, with hope in your heart.
And you're in for a big surprise.
When you're marooned, marooned, marooned
marooned, marooned, marooned,
marooned, marooned, marooned in a blizzard of lies.
A blizzard of lies.

I’ve been watching “Breaking Bad” and the protagonist (a meth cooker) purchased a car wash to launder his illegal funds. There’s a scene where his wife, a bookkeeper, runs the cash register and every time a customer buys a basic service, she creates a second receipt showing that they purchased a more expensive service in order to launder his funds. Of course the customer is only really charged for the less expensive services and never sees that the car wash is reporting that they were charged $75 instead of $25 for a wash.

During the 2008 campaign, the Obama campaign organization deactivated the software that checked addresses when they accepted credit card donations which made it impossible to track whether any campaign contributions were illegally made from non-citizens outside the United States.

I wonder if it would be feasible for a political campaign that is soliciting $3.00 contributions to report them as contributions of greater amounts up to whatever the minimum level is that they have to provide documentation for with the difference being funds that are harder to account for.

Levi Starks said...

Well, I love breaking bad, and i remember that exact scene.
It never occurred to me that this could be a money laundering scheme. But you're right, they may be just looking for names to attach larger donations to.
Now you've got me thinking about donating $3 so I can try to follow it, and see if larger donation wind up being tied to my name.

Bruce Hayden said...

During the 2008 campaign, the Obama campaign organization deactivated the software that checked addresses when they accepted credit card donations which made it impossible to track whether any campaign contributions were illegally made from non-citizens outside the United States.

I think that even at the time, it was fairly obvious that this was done in order to accept as many illegal donations as possible. And, yes, apparently that is what happened, with the entire roster of NFL teams or Disney casts of characters contributing.

My thoughts at the time were that this was to allow foreign contributions, somewhat like what Clinton/Gore had done with the Buddhist temples, etc. The ChiComs esp. seemed desirous of reelecting those two.

But, when I was back in D.C. this summer, over drinks, the people we were with, who were decently plugged in (obviously not as well as American Politico here...) told us that it was common knowledge that a lot of that illegal money came from labor unions.

Of course, we will probably never know exactly who contributed what to Obama's 2008 campaign.

And, that is the problem - to the victor go the spoils, and the DoJ would have had to investigate this, and that Department happens to now be run by Eric Holder, who has shown himself apparently willing to break federal laws to support Obama and his Administration.

The reality here then, is that if you cheat to get elected, you won't pay the price of cheating and breaking the law if you control the law enforcement mechanism of the government after you win.

That is interesting. I'd imagined it was labor unions paying people to sit at computer banks and enter information from pre-paid Visa cards. The campaign even gave out prepaid Visa cards as a prize once.

But they also didn't check for foreign addresses, so I think the answer probably is both theories are right.

Many Egyptians fear the military is trying to entrench its power.

Egypt has been ruled by a military council since President Hosni Mubarak was ousted in February. Parliamentary elections are due this month.

The protest, and another in Egypt's second city, Alexandria, are demanding the withdrawal of proposals for constitutional change by the military authorities.

These cells are often unable to get rid of this excess glucose.

As a result, they become damaged and activate what scientists refer to as pathways of cellular damage - damaging other cells and triggering complications like kidney disease and blindness.
