You can't ask questions in here! This is the press room!

Ha ha. Funny — or scary — how often "Dr. Strangelove" allusions have been coming up.

***

I've made a "Dr. Strangelove" tag. There are now 12 movies I've done tags for. I suppose I should have done more along the way. When I first started doing tags, I tried to make them very general, using "movies" over and over, until it's up over 1000 posts (and is the second largest tag here). It becomes useless at that point to anyone but me, because you can only display one page of posts by clicking on the tag, and the lack of specificity makes it rather uninteresting anyway. I'm into specific tags now. I like the way they dig up diverse old stuff. I made "beer" a tag today. That's part of my effort to be specific about food and drink, instead of just "food" and "drinking." And the old "animals" tag is uselessly large. Even "dogs" is large. I've made "poodle"! Another stupidly large tag is "Obama" — closing in on 1000. I've started all sorts of sub-Obama tags like "Obama is like Bush," but it's hard to remember to use them all. There's no need for you to appreciate any of this. I'm mainly amusing myself.

I'm devastated. I always assumed there was an Althouse Master List of tags, continuously reviewed, updated and consulted, and that no post was ever made public until all tag possibilities were exhausted.

Sometimes it's best not to know what happens behind the scenes.

But he'll see everything! He'll see the Big Board! (OT, maybe, but I've always loved that line.)

That is the beauty of the blog. Before all this existed, you might fill a notebook with thoughts and it truly would only amuse you.

Now you entertain us and the comments sometimes amuse you.

You really do need a boyfriend.

Or at least a dog.

You need a "tags" tag, for posts about tags.

Ann,

I know exactly what you mean, but it's hard to know what to do with tags until you get there. I've tried to wheedle them down but, as you've said, they become useless as just "books" or something. The cool thing about my subject (cultism) is these idiots are always up to *something* so even though I may think I'm making a tag for a one-off, like a book by Luna Tarlo, her son is the crazy cult leader, Andrew Cohen, so his name will show up in the oddest of places. Anyway, now I just make tags without a thought, and if the list gets huge, so be it.

I appreciate this post because, as a blogger, it's a subject I've never seen addressed.

My town has an ordinance against tagging. They'll make you clean it up with a toothbrush.

I don't bother with tags. I think that if you're really interested in a topic, doing a search will pull up all posts on that topic.

It's at least as good as manually tagging, and a lot less work.

Andrew Cohen. Is he a Never-Slept-With-Cohen or not?

You need a taxonomy of tags, clearly. A hierarchical system, perhaps?

You don't want to become a tag hag.

Then a bunch of people will hang around just waiting to get validated by being acknowledged and getting a tag.....oh wait a minute....nevermind.

"This is worse than the Middle East," he joked, alluding to the territorial claims staked on the cramped corridor. "Who's sitting where and all that stuff."

Great. Can you imagine Bush or ANY Republican joking like that and not getting flailed mercilessly for it.

This is what the Arab world sees and seethes about.

Was just flipping through the channels and saw that "Dr. Strangelove, etc. etc." is on Turner Classic Movies in about 40 min. Haven't watched it start-to-finish in many years, but now feel I must. It's like I'm being sucked into a vortex or something...

Oh. Nice! Thanks OG.

My father is the most intelligent guy I ever met. He's really a genius. But like many young people in the '60s, he was overly impressed by Dr. Strangelove.

He really and truly believes that the way the world worked was that the US President picked up a phone, and he coordinated world events with his Soviet enemy.

Hello, Dmitri?

Cheers,
Victoria

Depends on his hog I guess.

Although what his motorcycle has to do with anything is beyond me.

We also need tags for hanging tags, dimpled tags and pregnant tags.

Isn't there a Dewey Tag System? A library science major a the Univ of Bucky could help answer that.

Library science. Now there's a tough major.

Then they need to give up on destroying Israel, eliminate Hamas and probably Fatah, then representatively create Western style rule-of-law. Then they'll quit seeing things like that.

Not a notebook. File cards, 3 by 5. With little index markers on the top, to sort them by subject, which were called (wait for it): tags. Any library science major could tell you that.

Now an engineer might not know...
