Trump and the Republicans funded NPR for 6 more months tonight. Also funded 17% of USAID waste that's now hidden from view in the State Department budget. I see there's millions more for the liberals at the Kennedy Center in that bill.

Trump is the best thing to happen to Democrats since Joe Biden's $2 trillion "Inflation Reduction Act" that sent $2 billion to Stacey Abrahams.

In my opinion, no. There were two armies to destroy, the Army of NV and the Army of TN. The Army of Northern Virginia was going to defend NV, and the Army of Tennesse was half destroyed in Atlanta.

It might have changed the strategy of the Army of the Potomac by muting its fixation on taking Richmond and letting it focus on the battles instead of manouver.

Charleston would have been a bad choice. I don't think the Confederacy could have built up enough of a navy to properly defend it against the USN. Atlanta would have had an interesting effect as it was the one place in the South where the there was a junction between the East-West and North-South rail lines. Communication between theaters would have been much easier.

That would have been a bigger advantage to the Army of Northern Virginia because they wouldn't have had to worry about defending Richmond and could have focused more on threatening Washington, DC.

Lee pretty much maximized his advantages over incompetent Union Generals. DC was not a realistic target because it was so massively defended. However, assaulting DC instead of Gettysburg might have been advantageous for McClellan as the Democrat presidential candidate in 1964.

There is a small but interesting set of word-pairs like liquor-liquid. Rigor-rigid. Torpor-torpid. Stupor-stupid. I have pondered them for years.
This evening, I cooked a cross roast, and I was making gravy from the juices in the roasting pan. I added some beef broth, and some red wine. To thicken it, I was adding a butter-flour mixture, stirring over low heat. And I found myself thinking, yes, it is thickening nicely. It is becoming more "gravid".
Now. There is no word "gravor". But "gravid" is certainly a word. And so is "gravity". What does this have to do with the word "gravy"?

Thus providing ANOTHER example (did we really need another example?) of the irrefutable alliance between western lefties/dems/LLR-lefties and their islamic supremacist pals. I saw about half of "The Substance". That's the Demi Moore movie. The presence of Demi Moore in the movie defeats the premise of that movie. The premise is that an aging actress goes to elaborate lengths to maintain a youthful appearance because otherwise no one would want to see her. The thing is, I streamed this movie precisely because Demi Moore is in it.....Demi Moore was a preternaturally beautiful young woman. Nowadays she's a preternaturally beautiful older woman. She's worth looking at.....There's considerable nudity in the film, but the prurience is curtailed because of the disgusting side effects of the drug she is taking.......Beautiful women are more beautiful when they're younger. That's a sad fact of life, but I know of many sadder facts.

THEN the other day I saw jars of Italian tomato sauce in my supermarket labeled as "Gravy"!

Yes. Back in my State U Zoology class, we studied parasites, one of which was the tapeworm.

Ingesting "gravid" females got you into a bunch of trouble, as the critters could reproduce to lengths of six feet or more in your gut and steal your food.

(I never got tapeworms, but during the course of a long life I was host to ascaris lumbricoides, shigella, and giardia.)

Thanks, India!!

Similar words often trace back to indo-European roots arriving via Latin/French. But English is filled to the brim with hundreds of thousands of words from other languages like pajamas, barbecue, kabuki (theatre), ketchup, tattoo, safari; and from unknown sources like gravy or bastard.
Of course, making the roux is a weighty matter and a failure may give rise to a pregnant silence.

I see Canada and Ukraine have folded. I predict all the different countries facing Trump's reset dmands will give in, in that they will enter into a deal making process in place of war or an unfair trade system. Hamas and France will be the nastiest because no one wants Hamas while France wants no one but Greenland will be the only real holdout. I'm not sure what would happen if every male Greenlander was offered a motor boat and a rifle and every female Greenlander a choice of several appliances but I think they'd try for more from Denmark and then lose the votes in a winter storm.

Gadfly wants to shame everybody into dutiful, unquestioning compliance. Dude, thou dost protest too much ! Nobody here is Scrooge. Chopping USAID is a program to cut the waste and the fraud, and reset what has become a swollen tick on the back of taxpayers.

Gadfly is in favor of the ticks, and parasites, charlatans, and grifters, too - not charity. Is that how we should interpret your feigned hysteria? The plan has been to throttle it all to see who squeals and then gradually re-start the program under the aegis of the S.O.S., who has already resumed spending the budget of the items that, in his discretion, are above board.

What is your problem with that?

I think that if I could fix one thing about this wretched world, it would be a definitive solution to the problem of theodicy. Why does an omniscient, omnipotent, benevolent, eternal God allow innocent young children to suffer?

Hassayamper - theodicy is a false paradox.

An omniscient god knows things we don’t. It’s not a contradiction that he’s allowed things to happen that we don’t understand.

For most Christians, theodicy is resolved by god becoming man and participating fully in all the crappiness.

Other religions with a single omniscient god may just stick to “his ways aren’t our ways.” But it’s still not a contradiction.

If that were the end of it, we wouldn't have seen apologists from St. Augustine to Mother Theresa expend so much ink on it over so many centuries.

99.9% of the shit we suffer in this world is the shit we get up to. Remember god gave us free will. We're supposed to be figuring stuff out for ourselves.
