The last few weeks there seems to be a disproportionate number of ‘What Democrats Do Now’ posts relative to the quantity of give a damn produced by…well, most people here. Gonna be a long four years…

Finally caught the latest Joe Rogan interview of Elon Musk. I know Joe really wants to believe the X-files. Elon answered the way I've always thought of the issue of possession of alien technology. If we had it, then why isn't anyone using it? I remember saying, "I bet NASA has alien tech and not telling anyone". I kept thinking, if NASA had it, we would have better than a Space Shuttle built on 1970s technology.

Sexy unhinged Grok is interesting, but still not enough to make me join X. I don't need more distractions in my life, and the combination X and Grok seem like a bad idea.

Since it is once again a talking point, yet another reminder that 10% corrections in equities happen about twice a year during normal times, ie not when washington is fire hosing extra trillions of dollars everywhere, much of which ends up in equity investments, for some strange reason. 20% corrections are rearer but still not something worthy of the armageddon talking points. The other point to remember is government spending counts towards gdp so when good people are hacking away at the swamp it’s going to be reflected. Think of it like an Obama eat your vegetables moment Democrats…

Any of you commenters regretting yet you subjected yourself to the mRNA shot for covid? Or the other similar one? I'm not regretting it- because it was obvious from the outset it wasn't going to work, so I didn't get one, and have nothing to regret.

Also obvious from the outset that all the mitigation measures being FORCED upon us- unconstitutionally, were useless. Now, finally, PhD's are writing books pointing out that indeed, the mitigation methods were, in fact, useless. And predicted to be useless as they claimed to follow the science.

Jeff Childers at CofffeeandCovid dot com today referred to a NY Times article discussing the newest book length mea culpa, titled In Covid's Wake: How Our Politics Failed Us explaining how the policies were wrong. Well, not quite a mea culpa, they're not apologizing for supporting the measures themselves, they're just saying that it seems now they were wrong. I don't think the people who wholeheartedly approved totalitarian methods to fight the virus will ever be able to forgive us who were correct. Me? I'd like to see some of the perps dangling from a lamppost...

The authors did an interview available here: https://undark.org/2025/03/07/interview-in-covids-wake/

I'm almost ashamed at my generation for falling for the propaganda- 95%+ of people my age, now 69, succumbed to the propaganda. And judging from the "friends" who unfriended me, a significant portion wholeheartedly approved of totalitarian measures and forced isolation of the populace if it might give them an extra day of life. Living in fear is not living.

It would only have taken a few percent of the population to do things like I did to break down corporate America. Being kicked out of a store for not wearing a mask- pushing a full cart of refrigerated and frozen stuff at the manager- "Have fun restocking it!" and leaving. If 5% of the population had done that, even once, that idiocy would have been stopped dead.

I do have to admire the skateboarders who shoveled out a skateboard park after town supervisors filled it with sand. And if you want to know why new voters are much more conservative now- they were subjected to such idiocies. Basketball nets being removed, then the hoops themselves. Outdoors, in the sun, where it's healthy to be. For people of any age. I could go on and on- but then, you all know of similar idiocies perpetrated in your own areas.

This says 91%: https://www.kff.org/coronavirus-covid-19/dashboard/kff-covid-19-vaccine-monitor-dashboard/
Tied with Democrats. And in getting the newest and "bestest" version, a larger percentage then Democrats.

This says 95% as of April 2023: https://www.statista.com/statistics/1254250/share-of-older-us-adults-fully-or-partially-vaccinated-against-covid/
And was harder to find.

And this shows that in Aug 2021 93% of Dems and 78% Reps >65 are "up to date", which means more then one shot. So more then that had the initial shot, some chose not to "boost".

After Zelenskyy’s petulant performance in the Oval Office I wrote that the deal he was supposedly going to sign is dead. Well, that’s a sort of not true, and sort is true. The deal for mineral rights is unchanged, but Trump is said to be adding new conditions to its signing, and one of those conditions is for elections to be held.

Do not screw with Donald Trump.

no, i'm not.
At that time, my dad was dying in a nursing home.
my options were:
a) refuse the jab, and never see my father again.
b) accept being "vaccinated", and be able to be with him.

do i think the "vaccine" "worked" ?
it worked for getting me into my father's room; which was ALL i thought it'd ever do. Should i have refused?

As you guys all know, I have been thinking about the Ukraine war a lot, and I am coming to the conclusion that Zelensky's strategy, and I think Europe, Macron, Starmer, and Merz, are behind it, is to sacrifice Ukraine and force Russia to get its victory by Ukraine's military capitulation, never recognize Russia's claims on any territories, and fight an asymmetrical war of assassination and terrorism, with the hope that it is just too much for Russia, and it collapses from the strain. As far as Europe is concerned, the war is going fine. It's only Trump who thinks that the Ukrainian lives being lost are being wasted, and that they can outlast Trump.

But here is the wild card. Like after WWII, a new generation of leaders is emerging who, like our good friend here. Achilles, have actually fought in these endless wars, and seen their friends sacrificed in the combat, and seen what it looks like when inevitably innocent people are on the receiving end of our war machine, for that matter. This generation is not going to fall right back into the strategy of endless wars that Trump is interrupting.

Couple weeks back I set up my Amazon account so it always goes through the Althouse portal. Just in time to buy a new Charvel guitar in the strat style (I needed an axe with single coil pick-ups here), some small Fender amps and assorted furniture. Of course the Amazon tab on my browser looks like it always did, and it provides no feedback or any indication it is crediting anything to Althouse. But like in other things, I just walk by faith.

Here is your periodic reminder that rootless lefties like Mark really do believe our speech is violence and their violence is just speech. That is why he can so casually, and dishonestly, compare people torching Teslas and breaking the dealership windows to a GOP argument being "incorrect."

Amazon deliveries are so scattershot in my part of the country the delivery dates have become mere suggestions- nay, they have become a definitive ‘not on this date’ indicator. Anything Amazon routes through USPS its a tossup if it arrives at all. Once in a blue moon something arrives a day early…

I've had that happen—losing pending text in Blogger, after checking something on another page, using iOS—for years. Not lately actually—but then I know to save Blogger text into notes (I use Evernote) when I need to do something (other than trivial) on another page which happens to consume memory.

I like using my iPhone to browse and post in Althouse, as well as elsewhere, and seldom using my desktop computer & browser for the purpose. Except for the caveat up-thread, I think it does well in that role—though while I'm at home I typically view it on a 42" 4K monitor, as well as enter text using a bluetooth keyboard.

"According to reports, Khalil was moved to an ICE detention center in Louisiana. Why is that important? Because while Furman issued his order based on Khalil's New York petition for habeas corpus (i.e., that he be released pending further litigation), the law requires that the petition be filed in the federal court district the subject is being held in. If Khalil isn't in New York anymore, and it seems fairly certain he isn't, then Furman has no jurisdiction over the case."

Such usage pre-dates COVID. Remember “flu vaccines”? They've never provided anywhere near perfect protection either (indeed, I suspect sometimes they provide near zero protection against the actual flu viruses one encounters in the wild).

Thanks, @gilbar, I had a similar thought. I didn't get the jab because it would save me from covid. (I'd already caught it before then.) I had other reasons.

And I would never have pushed a full grocery cart at the employees. Those people were amazing. When we didn't know what we were facing, when the Italian dead were rotting in their homes, grocery clerks went to work every day. I live in a town with one store and heard how worried those employees were, yet they came and did their job. Heroes.

It wouldn't have worked to get me in to see my mom. The A.L. place was in full lockdown, shot or no shot. My sister was the only one cleared to go in, as primary care giver. Fortunately, she had a ground floor unit with an outside patio, so we could stand outside her room and chat, visit.

I didn't get the shot - I acted on my profound skepticism at the shifting and arbitrary explanations - but I marveled at the effect that the policy makers had on the mental health of ordinary people. My wife had to get it for foreign travel, but got only one shot. When we both got COVID, she suffered much worse than I did.
