Fed Dims Economic Outlook, Citing Uncertainty Over Tariffs ~ WSJ

So the Fed expects sharply lower growth and stubbornly high inflation -- it's called Stagflation in less refined circles. Both directly attributed to Trump’s trade wars.

Normally, that would be a wake up call for an administration.

The real problem will start when Trump focuses his attention squarely on the Fed and starts to demand multiple rate cuts in short order. That will really set the cat amongst the pigeons.

Trump to announce the end of Department of Education tomorrow in special event. I remember Republicans hoped Reagan would do it, but no. Nobody expected the Bush’s to do it. Since its inception, the cost of education has outpaced other services while the quality of education has declined. After Democrats used DeptEd to keep schools closed longer during Covid, it seemed inevitable there would be a backlash by the voters. I’m hoping to see an equivalent drop in school administration as some jobs, such as regulatory compliance, become obsolete.

Arguments about destroying education itself are foolish. The biggest budget line item for nearly every state is education. The effect locally will be up to the states.

We spend a preposterous amount of money per pupil only to get graduates who cannot read their own diplomas. You might imagine that these are low IQ people passed through the system because of athletic skills, but lately it has included honors students (C.f. Aleysha Ortiz).

LOL! That's what I was thinking! You eat the moon food and then it starts growing alien organisms inside you. The veins of the aliens appear like roots under the skin, then start breaking up the human form the way a seedling grows through concrete and eventually ruptures it... Something like that...

"Try growing trees with taproots without dirt to anchor them in the ground."

It can be done. In fact, it has been done. Experiments conducted aboard Skylab in the 1970s demonstrated that more or less normal plants can be grown in a microgravity environment by using scaffolding to orient their growth in a arbitrary "vertical" direction. The infamous Biodome project saw small trees growing hydroponically with similar above-ground supports standing in for naturally developing roots. Later work aboard the ISS has shown that at least some plants are essentially oblivious to the absence of Earth-gravity -- cabbage and peas, for example -- and develop normally by orienting to a consistent light source. We may never grow useful mahogany in space, but it appears that growing many foods away from Earth may not be an insurmountable problem.

Big Mike: you could not be more correct about eliminating the DOE. As a former adjunct, I did a deep dive into grants, conferences and all the other waste. Later I did the same with K-12.

I have told too many stories here about top to bottom waste. Just one semester stands out in my mind: at one community college at which I taught, 60% of the students needed remedial math, reading, and writing skills. But everyone was passed. Some had been there for six years, collecting free taxpayer money for themselves and the school. I was not allowed to fail students, nor remove them from class if they started shouting, making out (yes, it happenned), threatening violence (we had a special button for that), using phones, or crawling up the aisles in unison (some internet game?).

Thank God for the good students. The guy with one hand studying oceanography who was transferring to a state school because his parents didn't have the money for four years of even a cheap state school. The single mom, maybe 20, who also managed a fast food store and could make the uncontrollable afternoon class calm down and was becoming a nurse. The utterly overeducated, thrifty group of older Jamacian women who were becoming pharmacists together (with their mortified nephew, whom they would scold about not sitting up straight). Poor guy. Imagine being that guy, with six aunties as your college classmates.

They're why these schools should exist. They other 90% of the students were there so we could have a bunch of DEI and ethnic administrators making six figures. I made about six dollars an hour because I actually gave reading and writing assignments and held a lot of office hours for the kids returning from Iraq, whom the administrators hated.

We need hyper-local control of our schools, from grade school, college, to Medical, Legal, and Ph.D. I'll be on that board.

The answer to the POTUS autopen dilemma is to create an app only activated by the some presidential biometrics that would read the document to the president and depending on how satisfied the president is with it, he can swipe right to activate autopen or left to indicate the document needs work or whatever. I would imagine the president already has a dedicated secure wireless phone. So creating an ASAP Autopen Signature Access President shouldn’t take a rocket scientist. Musk doesn’t have to get involved.

The idea for an autopen app came from asking the question why do I sometimes have to swipe the screen and sometimes just a touch of the screen will take me to the next step in the package delivery process? The answer is that just touching the screen could happen without my intention, it could happen accidentally. Whereas swiping has to be intentional. That’s how the connection to autopen came about.

Lem Vibe Banditory said...

When the process of a delivery is finished I have to swipe. Once I swipe right it cannot be undone, whereas if I touch the screen accidentally and I unintentionally go to the next step I can click to go back.

Lem Vibe Banditory said...

With an app they could do away with autopen and just index finger sign. But it wouldn’t be aesthetically appealing. It wouldn’t be suitable for framing. Leave the autopen machine take the cannolis.

No. That's fake news. The TV show was already in the works when the Southport attacks happened. Ten times as many people in Britain are murdered with knives than with guns, so if you want to make a series about a teenaged murderer, your killer would use a knife.

As I understand it, the television program was about a high schooler killing a classmate because of problems (bullying, it's been said). The Southport killer went across town to kill three little girls performing in a Taylor Swift dance program. So it's not the same story.
