"President Claudia Sheinbaum of Mexico struck a deal with the Trump administration to delay stiff tariffs, which were set to take effect on Tuesday, for a month..."

"... as the two countries reached a series of agreements on border security. Ms. Sheinbaum agreed to deploy 10,000 troops, who President Trump said would be designated to stop the flow of migrants and illegal drugs across the U.S.-Mexico border... She said it was important for 'humanitarian' reasons for Mexico to help control the flow of fentanyl into the United States, and she said there was a plan to deploy the troops immediately."

From "Live Updates: Mexico Reaches Deal With U.S. to Delay Trump Tariffs/President Trump said he would pause tariffs on Mexico for a month, but levies on Canada and China were still set to take effect on Tuesday. U.S. shares fell at the opening bell, following drops in Asian and European markets, amid fears of a trade war" (NYT).

A success for Trump. I hope this goes well.

So Mexico will now do what any decent country should have done in the first place. Control its side of the border and stop drug and illegal aliens from pouring over.

Again, this just proves that the Uniparty elite has always wanted an open border to get cheap labor and doesn't care if drugs or criminals or whatever come on over too. The Leftwing elite hates the white working class and wants to destroy it. The Rightwing elite just wants cheap labor and no unions.

The could have done this 20 years ago. Instead they pushed Amnesty.

The important thing at this point is that no-one must tell Trump that Mexico already has more than 10,000 troops in the border area fighting the drug gangs, so the only thing that's changed is that he's agreed to clamp down on the smuggling of guns from the US to Mexico. Which is something Mexico's been demanding for ages and the US was ignoring.

The key thing to remember with these trade conflicts, as with the Colombia one earlier, is that Trump doesn't need to actually win. He just needs to be able to tell his voters that he won. Whether there are any actual concessions by the other party is immaterial.

Well played by the Mexicans. I suspect China are just well-used to tariffs and will prefer to refuse to deal and just accept the conflict. Which leaves Canada as the remaining doubt. It's hard for them to make an announcement that looks like a concession, because he doesn't seem to have actually asked them to do anything specific.

Jaq said...

Well the Mexicans may have had those soldiers on the border, but they certainly were not using them to stem the tide of illegals coursing through Mexico to cross our borders likewise unmolested by law enforcement. They were plenty molested by the cartels, though, don't you worry about it.

Enigma said...

Gun smuggling: Moot point. Modern 3D printers and cheap CNC machines make it possible for any old group (such as in Myanmar) to manufacture their own weapons. Gun control is a 20th century retro-tech topic.

The main issue is that Biden consciously left the smuggling routes wide open. Humans are much harder to smuggle than chunks of steel. If people can be easily moved across the border the weapons smugglers didn't even need to try.

Columbia pushed its drug/cartel issues out to Mexico and Ecuador. Ecuador was previously calm and peaceful, but an Obama-like leader allowed the drug gangs to use its excellent port of Guayaquil for smuggling. They now have curfews, prison riots, tourists murdered on the beach when the stumble across smugglers, etc.
