The Trump sentencing is in progress, with Trump participating remotely.

Here's a free-access link to the NYT live-blog of the sentencing.

Trump is alternating staring at the camera and glancing down as [the prosecutor Josh] Steinglass... says that the American public has the right to a presidency unencumbered by the continuing demands of any alternative sentence. But, Steinglass says, it’s important that Trump’s status as a felon be formalized, to pay due respect to the jury’s verdict....

Todd Blanche, Trump's lawyer... blasts the very legitimacy of the case. He says that it was “started for what amounted to a third time” after Trump announced his intention to run for re-election, repeating Trump’s frequent accusations of election interference....

Trump begins speaking. “This has been a very terrible experience. I think it’s been a tremendous setback” for New York and its court system, he says.... Trump says that people in the country got to see the case “first-hand” and then he won [the election].... Trump again complains about the gag order that he’s been under. “I assume I’m still under a gag order,” Trump says. Then he adds, “But the fact is, I’m totally innocent.”...

“I was treated very, very unfairly, and I thank you very much,” Trump concludes.

UPDATE: "Justice Merchan, as expected, sentences Trump to an unconditional discharge. He wishes Trump 'Godspeed' as he prepares to assume his second term in office. The judge leaves the bench."

This post on X from Johnathan Turley is a good summation of my thoughts on this matter:
"...It [a bait and switch by Merchan to ultimate jail Trump] will not happen. Today, we will see the ignoble end to a raw form of lawfare. What critics will get is the labeling of Trump as a convicted felon, a fact that will then be repeated like a mantra by the media. Merchan can be expected to add to that rhetoric with punishment soundbites. It is a sad day for the New York legal system."

So the left gets to call Trump a "convicted felon". As another commenter noted in a previous Althouse thread, the signers of the Declaration of Independence were also called felons. The label will only exist until the case gets reversed on appeal, which many expect it will be. And if it isn't, the flood gates will be open for other politicians to be convicted and won't that be fun?

Peachy said...

If Trump had not won the election, he'd be in jail. We need to stop dignifying this "lawfare", this bogus attempt by leftists and Democrats to destroy a political opponent. The whole point of sentencing him is so the MSM and all their leftists stooges can now call Trump a "Felon". They can't call him a Rapist anymore, because Trump forced the MSM to stop lying about that. But this will be on the record.

THis isn't a victory, its just another holding action. The liberal/left weren't able to jail and destroy an ex-POTUS and Republican candidate through Lawfare but they almost did. And they will try it again.

So Hillary Clinton reported the payment that she made to create the phony dossier as "legal expenses" rather than the campaign expense that it was, and then went and used the fake dossier to deceive the voters of New York State in a presidential election in an attempt to steal it. Oh, the "majesty of the law" doesn't apply to Democrats. I keep forgetting.

Can anybody here provide the list of other New York State real estate developers whose finances were combed over minutely in search of potential felonies? Hochul comes from a family of real estate developers, I am sure that nobody in that family ever listed their professional best estimate of the value of a property on a loan form, that might differ from the invidious valuations made by a hostile prosecutor.

Ah, the "majesty of the law," we should all respect it, so I am sure that such a list exists.

When is Hillary's trial for destroying Federal records, as attested under oath by her assistant, of meetings she had with foreign nationals as Secretary of State, the same foreign nationals who donated hundreds of millions of dollars to her political slush fund, err, I mean her "charitable foundation," before they could get a meeting, al la Talleyrand. It was Hillary's replay of the XYZ affair, except that she was playing the part of the villainous France.

I see that Federal Records issues led to a raid of Trump's home, and a search of Melania's underwear drawer.

RCOCEAN II said...

The whole idea that there's going to be "payback" for Trump's lawfare prosecution is absurd. The Republican Establishment wouldn't even denounce Merchan and his kangaroo court - when it looked like Trump could go to jail. The SCOTUS let this sentencing happen.

I repeat: The only reason Trump isn't at Riker's Island is because he won the election. All the blather about "Boy it sure was hypocritical" and "Gosh darn it, the case was so unreasonable" is beside the point. The Democrats don't give a fuck. This will happen to whoever the Republicans nominate in 2028, and if it doesn't it wont be because the D's wont try, or because they're ashamed of being hypocrites (LOL).

Is it just me or did some of you also have a feeling (premonition?) though distant but still possible of DJT being bum-rushed out of the courtroom in cuffs and bound for Rikers Island or some other NYC area gulag? The only -- ONLY -- reason this was done was so Democrats could have a feel-good moment saying "Felon" with respect to Trump. Yet chief justice Roberts endorsed this end-run around the SCOTUS ruling that the judge must consider the immunity implications. So now can we do the same with anyone who has a form of immunity? Does this now apply to immunity under Good Samaritan laws, diplomatic immunity, law enforcement qualified immunity, presidential immunity, legislative immunity or judicial immunity? So now any rogue prosecutor can now pierce that immunity with a friendly judge and jury and let the process be the punishment? We'll sort it out later, right?

"Trump, as a convicted felon, will likely find it more difficult to raise money, to get endorsements, and win over undecided and independent voters. It may only impact a small percentage of voters — probably not more than 5% or so, but that may well be the difference between winning and losing the election. There is no indication that becoming a convicted felon will help his election chances.

It helps to understand that these were productions, not cases, that the news is made up of stories that are going through a life cycle. New York Judge Merchan: It was the citizens of our nation that chose to protect Trump

Mike Davis:
"I’m glad the Democrats had their cathartic sentencing today because it is going to backfire—and backfire spectacularly. Right now, the Democrats think they’re the hunters.

And guess what? On January 20th at noon, they’re going to become the hunted. I’m going to make damn sure of that as a private citizen at the Article 3 Project, exercising my God-given right to speak and to lobby government. I’m going to make goddamn sure the Trump 47 Justice Department opens a criminal probe. I’m going to make damn sure that happens. I’m going to make that my very public advocacy every day until Juan Merchan’s ass is in prison."

Morgan J. Freeman is a pussy. Prove me wrong. Little wimp is fraidy scared to blame the people HE voted for. I wish him luck. Why would he expect anybody to watch anything his bigoted self puts out anymore. (Teen Mom ect....) Hope he and miserable people like him lose everything. They deserve it.

Justice Merchan : I think I can sum up the sentence for you in one word. Nothing.
American People : Nothing?
Justice Merchan : Nothing.
American People : What does that mean?
Justice Merchan : The sentence is about... nothing!
Alvin Bragg : Well, it's not about nothing.
Justice Merchan : No, it's about nothing.
Alvin Bragg : Well, maybe in philosophy, but in politics even nothing is something.

The only just ending would be for the judge to sentence Trump to awarding Bragg a ham sandwich.

"Except, in prison, Trump would be a punk."

Yeah, a punk with a Secret Service detail and the nuclear football.

Cookie's still competing for the title of the Dumbest of Dumbasses.

"I'm guessing the fires didn't make it to Pasedena yet."

They have, courtesy no doubt from one of victoria's arsonist bug type allies. She couldn't be more proud, just as she is proud of biden even after knowing he showered with and sexualized his own adolescent daughter. A practice, if you can believe it, that victoria of pasadena called "normal".

So when a psycho like victoria posts at Althouse blog, you should know what kind of demented mentality posts what she does.

The pasadena fire is being called the Eaton fire.
