The funeral for President Jimmy Carter.

The NYT is live-blogging the service at the National Cathedral, here. Excerpts:
It is unusual for five living presidents to be together in one place. Before 1991, there was only one other period in United States history, around 1861, when more than five presidents were even alive at the same time....
President-elect Trump has been talking almost nonstop to former President Barack Obama since the two sat down next to each other a few minutes ago. The conversation seems to be mostly one sided, with Obama listening and responding with shorter answers.

Joe and Jill Biden have arrived and taken their seats in the front row next to the vice president and Doug Emhoff.

While the cathedral is largely full, the congressional section has a lot of empty seats.

ADDED: There are 5 living Presidents and the oldest is the current President!

AND: We've all been trying to frame this joke:

PLUS: There is nothing to be sad about here and there is no need to forbid humor.

ALSO: The only missing spouse of a President is Michelle Obama. Fortunately, Town & Country has the explanation
According to journalist Jeff Zeleny, speaking on CNN, she had scheduling conflicts. "I'm told by her advisors that she has scheduling conflicts," Zeleney said on the network's broadcast of the funeral. "She's still in Hawaii," he added.

She was scheduled to be in Hawaii! The last time I saw "scheduling conflicts" used as an excuse, it was Kamala Harris explaining why she wasn't going to do the Joe Rogan podcast.

Wife and I will not mourn him. In 1976 - 1980 we were a young couple fresh out of grad school and starting out in life with a fixed-upper of a house and two good jobs but two beater cars to replace. It was no fun thanks to him and his policies.

Is "live blogging" a funeral or memorial service proper and respectful?

Are journalists out front shouting at Jill, Melania, Kamala, and Hillary, "Who are you wearing?"

Looking at President arriving and sitting, I thought, who is that big, ugly old guy shaking everyone's hand, and then realized its Al Gore. LOL. Laura Bush has aged well. I wondered why the Presidents sat where they did, and then realized it was by years in office, Clinton at one end, and Trump at the other.

Melania probably demanded to sit at the end, so she doesn't have to pretend to like Obama. Pence shook Trump's hand and made small talk. I don't Trump, like all the Presidents, doesn't take any of this personally. The First Ladies, including Hillary, probably do.

Robert Cook said...

No need. Trump is certainly spewing his patented and incessant self-serving and self-aggrandizing bullshit and ignorance, peppered with insults and name-calling toward any and everyone else currently irritating him. Obama, on his part, is just making non-committal phatic responses, hoping Trump will shut up sooner than later.

Oh, I'm not so sure about that. I've been thinking about Carter's Playboy interview, and that famous remark that looking lustfully at a woman other than his wife was "adultery in my heart". I am wondering if he maybe meant that, having sworn an oath to "forsake all others", he felt obliged to try to do exactly that. And that failing in that obligation, while quite possibly humanly unavoidable, was nonetheless a regrettable failure.
By all the evidence, theirs was a happy marriage. His concern for the terms of their agreement may have been an important reason. Who knows, what a woman feels, when her husband takes a long look at another woman's cleavage? I'm sure I don't. But Jimmy Carter was sure as hell no Bill Clinton.

100, or even late 90s, is still unusual, but a surprising number make it to at least 90: Ford (93), Reagan (93), GHW Bush (94). Kakistocracy said...

Consequences play out over decades. Carter left many positive legacies and few negative ones. Like Truman, he will be reassessed -- favorably. In contrast, the Reagan and Bush presidencies for all their triumphalism left trains of major negative consequences that continue to unfold to the present day through tax and regulatory encouragement of income inequality and wealth concentration and a unilateralism in foreign and military affairs that led to the disastrous policies of President George W. Bush, Reagan's political inheritor.

The Reagan-inspired idea that "government is the problem" is one of the most toxic legacies ever and exists on a different planet from "government of the people, for the people." Unfortunately we still are too often in the grip of "government is the problem" thinking when for example health care can only be straightened out by government; the "private sector" profiteering has turned it into the biggest cesspool in the nation's history. Plutocratic greed got its talons into the Washington policymaking apparatus during the Reagan era. When the well-connected can deregulate their way to billions, don't be surprised that Washington becomes the "free market" for this type of rent purchasing.

Carter's biggest shortcoming may have been his energy policies, based on incorrect assessments of domestic scarcity, particularly natural gas. His Synfuels project was a poster child for bad industrial policy. Energy markets are awesomely powerful. Reagan's deregulatory efforts in energy created lasting goodwill with average Americans for whom home heating and vehicle fuel purchases are their largest variable living expenses.

One enduring lesson is that high inflation and gas lines at the pump will unhorse a president, particularly a Democratic one, at the next general election. One should not let both phenomena into the same election cycle. Better to let inflation run than have voters stewing in gas lines.

Carter's observation of Ted Kennedy is astute. He embodied enough of what Americans don't like about the sense of entitlement prevalent in Washington D.C. to have been the Alf Landon of modern Democratic presidential candidates if he had ever got the nomination. The "dream shall never die" was a delusion of the Kennedy myth making establishment -- but hey, on a good day with a following breeze ... But probably never against Reagan. The Democratic establishment in Washington to this day has a Kennedy-esque aura to it that is mistrusted by many average people across the country. As Hillary Clinton has shown, political legatees lack the fundamental personal accomplishment to close the deal, at least in the Democratic party. There has to be an echo of authenticity in the campaign hoopla. And Ted Kenney had some pretty dark sides, too.

One should remember that Jimmy Carter got the job in 1976 because he was from far outside Washington D.C. That was a strength that also turned out to be a weakness when it came to successfully playing the Washington game, the ultimate test to win reelection.
