What's that thing in the ice? See "Man rescued after ATV breaks through ice on Lake Mendota." The man was rescued yesterday, but the ATV was still out there this morning, partly submerged in the ice.

Anyway, write about whatever you like in the comments. And please support the Althouse blog by doing your Amazon shopping going in through the Althouse Amazon link.

Will the ATV driver be booked for toxic waste dumping?

Tesla recently installed 11 chargers in the parking lot at the east side Woodman's in their parking lot next to the sidewalk along Milwaukee. It took them about 3 1/2 - 4 months. That's 3 more chargers than Pete Buttigieg installed in the last 3 1/2 - 4 years.

I wonder what will become of Lloyd Austin, the three time AWOL secretary of defense. No one in charge of the nuclear football?
No problem.

There was an interesting article in the NYT - How Democrats Drove Silicon Valley Into Trump’s Arms (free link). Ross Douthat interviews Marc Andreessen about why the tech guys have moved to supporting Trump.

Andreessen seems to get it. In spite of having it explained to him very clearly, I think Douthout is still confused by it. Props to him for having the convo, though.

I thought pic #4 was just the Lake Mendota submarine surfacing a bit more than usual.

CNN got reamed to the tune of $5M by a Florida jury, with punitive damages still pending!

Youll be surprised neither msnbc or cnn are reporting it

Nor abc cbs probably not

Today the jury awarded Zachary Young $5 million in compensatory damages and found that the security contractor should also receive punitive damages for his pain and suffering. In my opinion they needed another couple zeroes to help convince CNN thst they really did do wrong.

I read the transcript. Seems to me, Douthat really wanted Andreessen to come right out and say "Trump is Hitler."

I am 100% happy DJT won and that I voted for him after sitting out 2016 and 2020. I am disappointed DJT and R's are going to cut taxes. We need to keep the rates the same on everyone, except slightly raise them on the wealthy. Cutting government spending will unemploy working class and middle class folk. The wealthy need to sacrifice also. Trump neeeds to cut regulation and increase "animal spirits" of the business/creator class, which he has done already. 90's showed taxes could go up and yet the economy could still boom.

If you want a different angle, Peter Robinson from Hoover Institute just posted an interview with Andreessen. It's long ... an hour fifteen ... but very interesting regarding the incoming Trump administration.

Eric Abbenante on X:

LA Times owner admits endorsing Karen Bass was a mistake:
Pat Soon-Shiong: "We'll accept some blame. LA Times: We endorsed Karen Bass. That's a mistake, we admit that.
Maybe we should think about how we elect people.
I'm glad that's been taken up as almost a meme: That 'Competence Matters'."

It's 2025, and Democrats are just figuring out that 'Competence Matters'. Maybe in 2028 They'll figure out men can't get pregnant

AofSHQ is reporting that shortly after the jury announced the compensatory damages, CNN folded and settled with Young. Amount not disclosed, natch

Christopher, I'll watch that next. Thanks.

The 30-year mortgage rate has jumped above 7%, following a 1% rise in 10-year Treasury yields since last autumn.

Thankfully, Scott Bessent, Trump’s Treasury secretary nominee understands these dynamics well. But whether he has the political power — or savvy — to do this is anyone’s guess. He is certainly in a race against time. So investors had better keep watching those Treasury yields.

After all, one thing that Trump does not want on his watch is a full-blown market meltdown, let alone a MAGA revolt over surging mortgage rates. If anything is going to impose discipline on his administration, it might just be those bond rates; indeed, it is probably the only factor that will.

The 10-year interest rate is the Delphic Oracle of our time.

The delta, or difference, between today's bond rate and the rate next Labor Day will correlate directly with Trump's approval ratings. And that alligator is snapping.

Tesla makes money from the sale, installation and operation of the best chargers on the market, Billy Boy. Mayor Pete isn't in the business, but now that Trump and Musk share an office, another charger brand may soon appear.

"Mayor Pete isn't in the business"

Mayor Pete was given $7.5 billion of our tax dollars to be in that business.

And you call yourself a conservative …

"another charger brand may soon appear."

Right. There's a Mercedes Benz charger brand out there, along with Tesla. There's a few others I've seen out there - but Buttigeges' brand will likely be something that you can pick up at WalMart, plug into the wall, and in no less than ten hours you'll get a good 5-10 miles of range.
