"He ended up in a prison in the Syrian capital known as the 'Palestinian Division,' and was held in a separate ward until Monday morning, a day after rebels took over the capital and freed thousands of inmates. 'It was a chaotic scene. I had my prison clothes on, and another prisoner was with me. I was walking to Jordan,' he said, stopping to rest every night in a farm. A local guard in Zahayabeh said he came across him in the morning. 'He didn’t speak much Arabic, so I took him home. He told me he wanted to go to bed. When he woke up, he asked for a fried egg and a boiled egg. I gave him both and some pickled eggplant too, and then I called you,' he said, turning to a member of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), the Islamist rebel group that has taken over Damascus. 'And then, the media attacked.'"

So, let get this straight. An American, in the middle of a civil war, with the USA bombing syria and occupying part of the country, "sneaks into Syria". Because he's a "religious pilgrim". There can be only two possiblities. He's a CIA/Israel asset. Or he's a nut. I guess the Syrians chose door number 1.
Anyway, glad he's freed.
The Syrian rebel alliance whom just defeated the imperial army seem eager to not piss of the USA. Thanks, Joe Biden!!!
"Robert O’Brien: “If you’re going to question Kash Patel’s character and you don’t know him, ask yourself—when’s the last time you put your life on the line for a stranger?
Kash did, driving into Syria to negotiate for Austin Tice’s release. That’s bravery and selflessness.”"

He's was either (1) trying to win a 2024 Darwin Award, or (2) an intelligence asset. These may be the same thing, as the spooky three-letter agencies play the angles and work whoever is available. See Lee Harvey Oswald.

Interesting use of the word 'kidnapped'
I think you mean the rebel alliance who is eager to not piss off the Administration that is a month away from assuming office (and is already influencing US relationships in international affairs). Thank Donny!!
So he "heard the word of God." Anyone know what God said to him? Locking up a religious fanatic who might be a spy in a secure but apparently nonviolent way seems amazingly light treatment from the Assad regime. I suppose there is a lot more to his personal story and his time in Syria than the press reveals here.
God said go forth and collect intelligence and send it back to the CIA. Here's a bunch of untraceable, non-taxed cash.
Howard, are you blaming the Romans? The Crusaders? The Mongols? The Ottoman Empire? The French? Syria has been stomped on for hundreds of years. The French appear to have created the insane cross-ethnic region named Syria that we have today.
Syria is a long-term basket case that lies at the crossroads between major powers. It's not unlike the "Doormat of Europe" aka Poland. If you live in the middle of a roadway you're gonna have lots of traffic. The USA prioritizes Israel, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt.

I think it's more of a response to Trump being president, but OK.
Since he got caught, no doubt he is CIA. Regular people aren’t that stupid.
Modern Syria was created per the terms of the Sykes-Picot Treaty of 1916, by which the Ottoman Empire was to be carved up between Britain and France (and, until they wimped out on their allies, the Russians--it was originally the Sazonov-Sykes-Picot Treaty).
I think we should treat Syria like the rest of the Islamic Middle East. Steal all their oil, and leave.
Regular people are sometimes that stupid and stupider. Timothy Treadwell (Grizzly Man) was way stupider than this guy, and certainly not CIA. Then there was the blonde woman who decided to hitchhike alone across Turkey, and was raped and murdered along the way. Examples could be multiplied. He may have been CIA, but was much more likely just an idiot with religious longings. The CIA could surely come up with a better cover story.
This guy was in no danger of being bombed: the US was not bombing "Syria", but ISIS camps in Syria, all of them a long way from Damascus and this guy's route to Damascus. And the civil war in Syria was also far away from his route. The danger was Assad's brutal tyranny, and that was in fact what caught him. At least he wasn't in prison for 30 or 40 or even 43 years, like some of the Syrians and Lebanese released this week.
The word snuck feels to me like the better way to describe the past act of sneaking. Sneaked feels more like a reference to casual footwear.
Pickled eggplant? I got to try that.

did not Damascus still had air service?
so he could have just flown in as passenger if he was not nuts
He heard the word of God (Allah).
And the word was:
B-b-b bird bird bird; bird was the word…
Was he held as a prisoner without a name, in a cell without a number?

Lem, Arab pickled veg are great! Very vinegary, not very salty, and a little hot, but not melt-your-mouth-lining hot by any means. They pickle carrots, eggplant, radishes, turnips, basically any veg. Great as an accompaniment for shawarma or the big goat-and-rice feast - helps cut the meat flavor, since they don't do alcohol.
I guess in a desert climate, you have to put up the veg as soon as you pick it, or it will rot in a day.

Syria includes some of the most ancient Christian sites. Damascus was where St. Paul became a Christian. It still has a strong Christian community (even if small). The language this guy used, and what prompted him, is pretty familiar within devoted Christian circles, even if not this exact choice. Given how many Christians make pilgrimages to Israel every year (it's a huge industry), I very much could see someone likewise feeling prompted to go into Syria. Not necessarily with wisdom, but young folks make all sorts of unwise decisions in seeking some kind of meaning.
And the language of "God told me" and similar is likewise very familiar within Evangelical and wider Christian devoted circles. Which isn't to say he did hear from God about this or that he was right in how he chose to visit Syria (there are no doubt organized, safer ways of doing so), but that his explanation for why he was there is very much believable if you know Christian culture.
Missionaries go, and are right now very much in, places they're not legally supposed to be. Maybe he is a spy, but his story certainly is much more plausible than most folks around here think.
CNN has paid people to be news story actors before. This one looks like Pallywood, god bless'em.
