Headline at The New Republic. Article by Greg Sargent. Subheadline: "Trump wants to turn the FBI into something so draconian that the political press many not grasp it until it’s too late. And Republican senators are already giving themselves cover to go along with all of it."
Is it "surrender" if you're on his side?
I see I have an old tag "Trump's swamp draining." I'll use that for this. I created it in 2016 but never really used it in the first Trump.

Sargent blocked me in one post thats how confident he is
"Trump wants to turn the FBI into something so draconian that the political press many not grasp it until it’s too late."
They're going to be stopped from acting as an arm of the Democratic party? And Democrats are alarmed?
The FBI's history dates to 1908 (then known as the Bureau of Investigation).
Federal income taxes date to 1916.
The National Firearms Act dates to 1934
The New Deal financial program dates to FDR in the 1930s
The Great Society financial program dates to LBJ in the 1960s
Etc.
The 20th century involved an ever-growing role for the government. If the FBI is crippled now, it'd just be a return to older standards.
Althouse : I see I have an old tag "Trump's swamp draining." I'll use that for this. I created it in 2016 but never really used it in the first Trump.
I can't conceive of a pithier obituary of the first Trump administration.
"I can't conceive of a pithier obituary of the first Trump administration."
I know. We'll see what happens this time.
Greg Sargent ?? The New Republic ??
I would have thought there are some writers and some periodicals that are so predictably rabid that you wouldn't bother blogging them.
The New Republic is very crotchety, senile, and shopworn for something that has billed itself as "new" for what? 110 years.
TNR should retire before it breaks a hip or something.
To be fair, he had very little support even from his own party.
Does anyone doubt the Trump will be impeached once the Democrats take over the House?
These people do not give up. They do not want to relinquish any of the control that they have over our lives.
I recall when TNR was left, but not anti-American, unlike Mother Jones or The Nation. The last 25 years have changed things in US politics.
It's not divisive when the Democrats do it.
Speaking of surrender:
"ABC News and George Stephanopoulos have reached a settlement with Donald Trump in his defamation suit. The network will pay $15 million to a charity and will issue an apology."
So Trump was right. Again.
I created it in 2016 but never really used it in the first Trump.
Trump’s corporate-tax fellatio with Paul Ryan was not sufficiently swamp-draining?
Looking back its incredible how naive Trump supporters, and it seems even Trump, were about the DC Establishment. Who realized that all these "life long republicans", pragmatic CEOs, hard-nosed "non-partisan" Generals, and "conservative" legal beagels, were in fact backstabbers, egomanics, and drama queens?
I just read on twitter someone asserting that Bill Barr was involved in the GA state suit against Trump. No doubt its a crazy conspiracy theory by someone looking for "Likes" and "retweets". But given the incredible things Barr did to sabotage and backstab Trump, maybe its 10 percent true.
Now Trump supporters are older and wiser. And we want Trump loyalists who support his agenda. And we don't care if the GOP Senators "Surrender" or not.
BTW, has anyone ever penetrated the mystery of Jeff Sessions behavior as AG? Why did he, almost alone among US Senators, endorse Trump in 2015, then refuse the DHS job, then accept the AG job, and then recuse himself almost immediately after being confirmed? Why did he then turn the whole "Russiagate" thing over to Rosenstein (who he recommended as AG)? And then tender his resignation to Trump in may 2017 with the intention of returning the Senate.
Was Sessions a sleeper agent? Was he actually working for the Establishment and then after Mueller investigation started, he was supposed to have returned to the Senate, with a private "Well done" from Mitch McConnell?
The Swamp does not want to be drained, nor does its Democrat-aligned legacy media allies.
into something so draconian
A golf course? I'd like that.
John McCain, Mitt Romney, the Cheneys, Mitch McConnell, and the Bill Kristol/George Will "conservative" media people all wanted Trump gone. If they were on his side the Mueller Investigation would have been blocked and the FBI/Crossfire Hurricane would have been the scandal of 2017 to 2018. But, swamp creatures love the swamp and set it all up. Every McCain funeral attendee was anti-Trump, and the content was nothing but an anti-Trump rally.
It took a couple years of observing Biden's incoherent chaos for people to accept the truth in Trump's thesis. The broader cultural mood is night-versus-day this time around.
Draconian? What does that even mean? Harsh? Harsh on whom? Dems? Well, turnabout is fair play on that one. I guess when the Dem/media complex went after Trump and other Republicans with scorched earth lawfare it never occurred to them that the shoe might someday be on the other foot? They never considered that they were setting a dangerous precedent? They assumed they'd never be out of power ever again?
Unlike the Dems, I'm against using lawfare on political enemies and I hope Trump doesn't sink to that level. But firing everybody in the DOJ who was a bad actor, who put politics ahead of the law, who cared only about power for their side . . . well, I have no problem with them each being shown the door. Every single one of them.
Even worse, they're going to go after actual criminal!
The fact that teh GOP Establishment beat Trump like a drum in his first Admin was why I supported DeSantis in the Primary.
The fact that he appointed Dr Jay B, and Kash, gives me hope that he learned something
Who cares? It won't go anywhere, it will just show up the Dems as idiots
Surrender?
Mother told me, yes, she told me, I'd meet girls like you
She also told me, "Stay away, you'll never know what you'll catch"
Just the other day I heard of a soldier's fallin' off
Some Indonesian junk that's goin' 'round
Mommy's alright, daddy's alright
They just seem a little weird
Surrender, surrender
But don't give yourself away
Hey, hey
My advise to Trump: don't ever trust them. They are liars and what's worse, globalist liars who sell the USA and the future of our kids for pennies on the dollar.
Its more like blowing up the minefield
It was a great magazine for a decade or two. Moderate liberal, and rabid pro-Israel. Filled with neo-cons and moderates, along with some leftists. They had no money and everybody who wrote for them was super-young. Lots of eclectic and interesting stuff. They published Charles Murray, for instance, and since so many people at the mag did not like Murray, they published a bunch of articles rebutting the scientist. That's how you handle controversy!
I really enjoyed the Marty Peretz years, and I was a happy subscriber for a long time. When he sold it, the magazine took a hard shit turn, and I can't bear to look at it now.
The movie Shattered Glass was based on real events at The New Republic. Cool movie, starring a young Darth Vader
You're fired.
We blew it.
Steve Chapman wrote for TNR doing the Peretz years, as I recall. Michael Kinsley and Mort Kondracke as well. I agree it was a good magazine in those years and went downhill after Peretz sold it.
