"... he returns repeatedly to a central point: What is required, he says, is 'radical reform' of government and 'reformers' who are capable of executing radical changes, according to two people briefed on the meetings, who insisted on anonymity to describe the internal conversations.... Mr. Musk has not been particularly aggressive about pushing his preferred names for administration roles.... Mr. Trump’s aides are divided on Mr. Musk’s role. Some see him as relatively harmless.... Others have chafed at his near-constant presence at Mar-a-Lago, especially given his lack of personal history with Mr. Trump. So it is notable that Mr. Musk has appeared concerned about the perception of his influence. On Wednesday, in response to a headline describing him as Mr. Trump’s 'closest confidant,' the tech billionaire
went out of his way to praise 'the large number of loyal, good people at Mar-a-Lago who have worked for him for many years. To be clear, while I have offered my opinion on some cabinet candidates, many selections occur without my knowledge and decisions are 100% that of the President,' he wrote on X."

Who's leaking?

More like who's lying. Anytime NYT uses a "knowledgeable source" it's nothings but a filthy lie.
So.... two hangers-on with big ears are hearing the insiders speak, and run off to notify the NYT. Looks like we're stuck with re-runs for now - if we read the NYT.
If you can't make it good, make it up.
Musk is well aware of the Democratic National Cutthroats, which is why this African-American feels that Republicans Trump the left-wing ideologues and progressive sects.
Talk of Musk buying MSNBC (LOL). Maybe he should buy the NYT instead.
[Musk], not known for his humility
The Pope is the world's most humble man.
As if Musk is some poor naif who has never seen boardroom back-stabbing.
Who?
Likely everybody. They just leak different things to different people.
I wonder if you could get AI to produce a copy of the NYT in which all news articles attributed to anonymous sources to disappear. Would anything be left?
There's an econtalk podcast by Barry Weingast on violence being the organizing principle of nations, explaining why you can't reform failed states, but applying to staffers preventing reform that removes their power. Basically, you have to pay off everybody in proportion to the damage they could do, if you want to have a stable system, and people forget that those rents prevent reform. When everybody has to be made better off, you forget to include those people in the deal.
Weingast has two later econtalk podcasts, if you want to check for developments. This one is from 2007.
The DOGE is going to be our last chance to consciously and voluntarily make the federal government less expensive and more efficient. If it fails, change will only occur in the aftermath of some catastrophe.
New York Times has been known to make shit up.
Oh good grief, here we go again. How many times did the NYT/WaPo/MSM lie about Trump and what he was thinking or what he was saying based on "sources familiar with the situation" or "sources inside the white house".
Remember when Trump was trying to wrestle the wheel from the Secret Service on J6? Remember when "the wall were closing in" during the Russian investigation? Remember when a "highly placed member of the Resistance" assured us he was "sabotaging the Trump agenda" and it turned out to be an obscure staffer no one heard of?
Until they attach a name to it, I don't believe it. Because even if it is someone inside the Trump circle, you have no idea whether they (1) made up or (2) exaggerated or (3) heard it from their friend who knew the cook who knew a waiter who overheard it.
“Who’s leaking?”
Well, in the Biden White House, we’d know who it was.
JSM
Sorry. I believe little of what is published by the New York Slimes.
Maggie Haberman has said many times that Trump himself is a big leaker. He calls her a lot. “I love being with her. She’s like my psychiatrist,” https://www.politico.com/news/magazine/2022/09/30/maggie-haberman-profile-00059343
Loomer. She's mad because she feels Trump is favoring Elon and not paying her enough fawning attention.
Envy is destructive. If someone is leaking, I hope they figure out who, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's made up by someone who thinks they should be privy to more than they are. Or made up by those doing the reporting.
NYT simply making stuff up, most likely. We’ve seen it before.
"Cutthroat Courtier Politics". Someone at the NYT is projecting.
Another so called leak by the NYT, or WaPo, or what ever POS propaganda pond scum happens to be next to feed another false narrative.
What makes you think these “leaks” aren’t intentional?
What makes you think these “leaks” aren’t intentional?
The first trickle of what will become a deluge of leaks as Musk snd Ramaswamy battle with the cabinet officers and heads of agencies over what cuts and reforms are going to be implemented, both fighting for support in Congress and in the public while preserving their influence with Trump.
The New York Times is infamous for publishing handmade tales. They have learned nothing from just a few years ago. The onset of newsmentia?
NYT: "My best friend's sister's boyfriend's brother's girlfriend heard from this guy who knows this kid who's going with the girl who heard Trump discussing policy with Musk last night. I guess it's pretty serious."
Are they making this up? or yes - who is the leaker. ?
Get that f*er out of there.
Apparently more direct version from 2013 incentive to create rents for stability.
Grotesque. Still, Musk is clever enough to navigate the depths of it and rich enough to dismiss the bullshit. It is still very off-putting.
One would have to excuse the gang at the NYT for scratching their heads. Trump and Musk are both sui generis. They've never seen anything like this before.
They fear DOGE, therefore they lie. An ancient story.
"Who's leaking?" Not a soul. It's all made up.
The NYT's isn't worth it. MSNBC actually has some value after all of their "talent" is fired and replaced with people like Greenwald, Taibbi and Carlson.
Fresh troll at 12 oclock
My goodness. This short article that describes relatively tame intercourt politics sounds like a nothing burgher with the liberal arts majors in the press and inner circle expectedly underestimating the analytical abilities of a first rate engineer and business man and the astronomically greater complexity of his problem solving skills.
Now that Trump is in complete charge, you folks should grow out of the battered wives syndrome.
Liberals need encouragement in the troubling Trump times. That is what the NYT is there for.
Who's leaking?
oh! Oh!! OH!!! i know! I know!! I KNOW!!!
someone that has spent LESS money on this election than Musk did!!

don't Like Musk? give ME a million dollars, and i will agree with YOU!
"according to two people briefed on the meetings, who insisted on anonymity to describe the internal conversations"
In other words, someone told someone who told someone who told someone. and we don't know how many someones - the number of degrees of seperation - there are. It doesn't say "...two people briefed on the meetings by people who were at the meetings...." It only says 2 people who were briefed on the meetings. Briefed by who?
We are in store for 4 years of this. Everything depicted in the worst possible light, every bird that falls from the sky to be Trump's fault.
Well, we know that the chinees are hacking everything, so they can leak anything they want , truth or lie. So specific leaks should never be assumed true, so listen to multiple sources and get a sence of comonality.
Excellent question.
"Karl Marx famously wrote that 'Hegel remarks somewhere that all great world-historical facts and personages appear, so to speak, twice. He forgot to add: the first time as tragedy, the second time as farce'. Donald Trump's crushing victory over Kamala Harris makes him undoubtedly a world-historic personage whose impact will be felt around the world for a very long time. But his second coming is no farce. It is a brutal show of strength." (Fintan O'Toole in the NYR, December 5, 2024)
And if there aren't enough brutal shows of strength, the NYT et al will make them up.
his second coming is no farce. It is a brutal show of strength
GOOD. May God give strength to his arm and scatter his (and my) enemies before him.
It’d be bad if there weren’t challenging people in Trump’s circle. That’s the whole point! Trump needs everyone to voice their views and ideas confidently, then agree or disagree and commit with his decision. No time to worry about all the feelz….
If you want to climb the paywall like an illegal immigrant
webpage archive takes snapshots of the internet
so you can see an older version of the article
"filthy lie" makes the story seem interesting!
it's a nothing burger
I didn't even finish it
the reporter ran out of things to say and started quoted the musings of Mick Mulvaney
apparently the only thing the "two sources" said was that Musk promises "radical reform" and also "reformers" who are capable of executing radical changes
I could have told him that with my ESP power
That's not a leak!
This particular quote suggests a boat full of leaks! Everybody's leaking. Not just two leakers at the beginning of the article. Now we have multiple aides talking to the NYT, supposedly. How does that even work?
Q: "What do you think of Mr. Musk's role in the Trump administration?"
A: "He's relatively harmless."
Q: "What do you think of Mr. Musk's role in the Trump administration?"
A: "I chafe at his near-constant presence."
I scoff at your horseshit, NYT!
The idea that he shows little familiarity with policy details suggests that there are other people who are highly conversant and fluent with policy details. I imagine that in our great country, there are tens of thousands of people who can speak about policy reforms in one or more areas and sound like experts or, even better, podcast guests. The overall concept that we should all just back off and leave it to the experts who know the right ideas and how to implement them -- I believe that a number of Americans who cast a vote for Trump on November 5 were trying to vote against that way of proceeding.
Given all the things the media has gotten wrong thus far about Trump's decisions for his new term, I'm starting to think media's (and especially the NYTs) problem is there is NO one leaking so they are just having to make things up (even more than usual).
As to Elon Musk being at Mar a Lago so constantly, I've heard it mentioned that it is due to security reasons. It's easier for their security to have them all in one location rather than spread out over a state or several states given the number of threats against Trump and his associates.
This is great, thank you!
"Some see him as relatively harmless.... Others have chafed at his near-constant presence at Mar-a-Lago..."
I am going to guess that it's not "Some" who are leaking. It's "Others".
