"On one side, there’s the enlightened maleness embodied by Harris’s vice-presidential pick and her husband, Doug Emhoff."

"These are the good progressive dads... the 'nice men of the left' who do guy things like coach football but also manifest liberal and feminist virtues.... Then there is the other model, the dark side of the Y chromosome: the toxic masculinity of Donald Trump, the anti-cat-lady conservatism of JD Vance.... But has liberalism perfected a model of modern masculinity while conservative culture slouches somewhere far behind? I’m skeptical.... First, I would have thought that by now liberals would be hesitant about proclaiming the special personal virtues of the male feminist, the enlightened pro-choice dude. After Bill Clinton, Eliot Spitzer and Harvey Weinstein, after MeToo case studies too numerous to count, surely we can say that sleaze percolates on the left and right alike....  Second... a strong, religiously motivated commitment to marriage and family — [is] not necessarily... anti-feminist.... [N]eo-traditional households actually show relatively egalitarian patterns of burden-sharing between spouses and strong paternal involvement in child rearing...."

Writes Ross Douthat, in "Masculinity Is on the Ballot" (NYT).

Douthat expresses skepticism about the generalizations and caricatures on both sides. I'll just add that feminism is dysfunctional if it doesn't stand apart from partisan politics.

ADDED: I interact with Grok again:

I laughed a lot, and I'm not exactly sure why, but Meade didn't think it was funny at all, so I tried again:

That's only funny for being a terrible failure at understanding the prompt. Where's the dadness? Where's the feminist virtue? Why is he in a stadium? The first picture was funnier.

I think it's important for people to reflect on the fact that Doug Emhoff impregnated his children's nanny while he was married to his first wife. We don't know what happened to the baby because the news media won't tell us. I highly suspect that they killed it.

That is the kind of a man that he is. That is what is on the ballot.

None of this was a deal-breaker for Kamala Harris. She married him anyway.

That is everything you need to know about this woman's judgement. We now need to ask ourselves ... is someone with this poor of a judge of a man's character the kind of person we want leading our country?

Oh WAIT! i know, there was a sex columnist that claimed (without evidence) that she was raped (IN PUBLIC!) by Trump.. Sometime in the 20th century ?

Also, there was a surfer girl, that claimed (without evidence) that she had a pass made at her, maybe by a republical judge.. But: she couldn't remember when or where or how or why or what happened

OH! and there was a stripper/porn actress that testified.. UNDER OATH, that she''d NEVER had sex with Trump.. At all.. EVER

This is where I really miss my late wife. First woman I ever met who bitterly denounced the pagan religion of feminism. “Fuck feminism,” was all she had to say on the subject. When women tried to indoctrinate her in their pagan religion, she told them to go fuck themselves. The funny part of this is that she was a blazingly beautiful and sexy Filipina and the lesbo feminists just took the beating because they were hoping to get some pussy. This was a hilarious part of our lives together. Everybody wanted her, so they would suffer the ridicule of this pathetic, evil pagan religion they wouldn’t accept from anybody else.

There’s a strong argument to be made that it never has “stood apart,” with the best evidence being the behavior of Progressive feminists towards any right of center women who espouse feminist ideals to the point of declaring Republican women as “not real women.” If the old saying that you can judge someone by the company they keep has any validity then feminism has always been highly partisan despite the happy face it occasionally wears.

The history of Trump's romantic life and sexual encounters are not as edifying as, say, that of Pence or Carter. I'll say this for him though: He played hard ball with women, but the women he engaged with could handle fast ball pitching. I would say that some of the women he was linked to were even more opportunistic than he. He was a naive swain in his dealings with Stormy Daniels. I give him more credit in this regard than the average Kennedy or the women that Bill Clinton hit on. I'm pretty sure a committed feminist could find something to criticize about Emhoff and the nanny--not that they ever would. I don't think it's even possible for a feminist to find anything unethical in Stormy Daniels behavior, but what Trump did was a prison offense.

I would say that the most monstrous abortion policy of our time was not instituted in Oklahoma, but rather in China. China's one child policy was god-awful. What's worse than women being denied the right to abortion is women being forced to have an abortion. And what's worse than women being forced to have an abortion is women abandoning female babies by the side of the road. This happened to millions of women and with minimal opposition from Western feminists......You're probably not hearing it here first, but there's quite a lot of hypocrisy among feminists.

Every once in a while, not often, but occasionally, I actually read the article before commenting. The column is not entirely the expected whacko lefty nonsense:

But if conservative forms of fatherhood were obviously toxic relative to the "Walzian glories of liberal dadhood, you would presumably expect to see those effects made manifest among children. And this is the third reason to doubt the caricature of cool liberal fathers and toxic right-wing dads: If you look at the data on the teenage mental-health crisis of the past decade, the indicators are conspicuously worse for liberal kids, who are seemingly more anxious and depressed than their conservative peers. "

FullMoon said...

Another:
"Indeed, if I were interested in spinning up a counter-caricature, I would suggest that a “cool progressive dad” model of parenting may create special problems for teenagers, because it’s rooted in a misguided belief that kids are supposed to be more enlightened than their parents, that a good dad just listens and learns from his wise progressive teenager. In fact, most children need more discipline, adult guidance and psychological-religious grounding before they’re ready to teach their parents anything — so being a cool progressive parent is often a good way to set your kids adrift.

Trump did do something to expand or explode older ideas of masculinity. Everything is beautiful or gorgeous, and he talks a lot about how he loves all sorts of people and things. That's not exactly tight-lipped, non-effusive Gary Cooper.

What critics object to in Trump is the old (Boomer) Adam that's hard for a lot of us to get rid of. Back in the Clinton years, we were told not to expect politicians to be saints. Good advice now, since none of them are.

What is it with Democrats refusing to contemplate the existence of unwanted grandchildren? Trump's dalliances pale in comparison to Democrats': at least he wasn't impregnating the babysitter or getting taxpayer set-aside jobs for blow jobs. And his first and current wife were and are strong and independent women -- the kind who survived and escaped communist oppression.

Walz just screws Communist China. Now there's a harsh mistress. We'll learn.

Hey, remember when Obama said he had to marry a black woman to become an elected official and dumped his longtime partner/proposed fiance (though he slept with her after finding Michelle?). Obama wanted to go all the way to the top and planned his life accordingly. Harris didn't. She wanted a comfortable life. A seat in the Senate and a rich husband would give that to her. It was Biden who gave her a shot at the big time. She did run for president in 2020, but that was part of a large pack who were all trying out their chances.

Also, San Francisco and Los Angeles are different from Chicago. African-Americans aren't as powerful a bloc there. Harris relied more on the votes of white liberals than blacks. There's a gender difference as well. Black men and white women are more of a red flag to voters, especially black women, than black women and white men. If Harris had married an African-American, though, he'd be more of an asset to her campaigning. If she had kids with him, she'd be doing even better in the polls.
