Big debate between me and Omaha Public Power director Craig Moody. As a lawyer of 40 years, I’ve never heard such admissions against interest. A whole series of them, but the shocker was he didn’t care if OPPD customers died during a forced winter blackout; forced because OPPD didn’t have an adequate supply of reliable power because of too much wind and solar in the grid.

Pure Maoist thinking. To the liberal elites, we plebes are collateral damage in their pursuit of Utopia.

Big sighs of relief in Jerusalem tonight over the VP pick. Ironic that the Jewish state should be happy that the Jewish guy did not get selected, but overt hatred is much easier to deal with than passive-aggressive love. It's actually a two-fer; Walz on the ticket makes it less likely that Harris will prevail in November, and if they do, it will be easier for the Israelis to oppose the actions of the American government.
Similar sighs of relief in Mar-A-Lago also.

So that threw up some alarm bells for some of our guys that -- why the sudden shift -- from one stance to the other?"

I see that astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams, already more than 70 days into a one week trip to the ISS, are going to be up there a few weeks more. It appears that NASA is about to give up on returning them via the Boeing Starliner that took them up, but the crippled (if not derelict) spacecraft is hogging up a docking port and until the Starliner gets an update to its software that lets it undock without a human at the controls it will continue to hog that docking port. There are other ports, but they are either in use or a type that SpaceX cannot use. So I hope the astronauts packed extra underwear and a spare flight suit or two. Or ten.

Mind you, a Starliner had previously flown up to the ISS, docked itself, undocked via remote control , and returned to earth without a human onboard, but Boeing or NASA or both decided to get rid of that flight software and cannot easily roll back to it.

This is not the same agency that successfully landed astronauts on the moon and brought them safely back to earth, anymore than the Secret Service of today is the one that stopped Squeaky Fromme from shooting Gerald Ford.

I decided to listen to Walz speak in Philadelphia. At first I was impressed with his speaking ability but then he started lying and I had to shut it off.

For example, Walz claimed Trump has never "served," and that Trump selfishly became president only to benefit his own business interests. That's so ridiculous considering the sacrifices Trump has made to connect with ordinary Americans and we know that Trump actually lost money while he was president. Estimated he lost a third of his wealth. (According to Forbes senior editor Dan Alexander, ""If he had sold everything on Day 1, paid the maximum capital-gains taxes on the sales, then put the proceeds into a conflict-free fund tracking the S&P 500, Trump would have ended his presidency an estimated $1.6 billion richer than he is today." Instead Trump held onto his businesses, had his sons handle them, took a lot of flack, and lost money. Walz in his Philly speech also claimed that the crime rate rose under Trump . In fact the first three years of Trump's term the crime rate did go down, following a much longer trend. But then in 2020 the George Floyd riots happened, initiated by Leftists, Antifa, and BLM and encouraged by Democrats, so there was an increase in crime in Trump's final year. Now Walz is claiming there was an increase in crime due to Trump's policies. Finally, Walz assured the audience that Trump is going to institute Project 2025, no matter his denials. Lots of cheering.

All these lies were uttered in five minutes or less. I couldn't listen any longer. I know for sure that Walz has no problem being a liar and acting in bad faith. Of course as a politician this is not a surprise, but it still is a turn off.

I may tune out this election until Nov. 5.

IOW, "dad" is a big f'ng liar.

So strange. LLR-democratical Rich assured us all in late 2022 and early 2023 that X would be dead as a platform in mere months based on Rich's deep understanding of business, marketplaces and technology.

LOL

And today we have leftists globally screaming bloody murder over X being the most powerful and wide reaching content platform in the world! The marxists in the UK want Elon arrested because X as a platform is showing the lies of the left in real time in Britain as Starmer sets the stage for Soviet style martial law and repression.

And this is on top of Abacus Rich telling us over and over that SpaceX is not a real space company...at the very moment SpaceX consolidates global space launch leadership at a scale never before seen while ULA, Boeing and Blue Origin collapse in comparison....wih Boeing incompetence stranding astronauts at the Space Station!

Its almost as if Rich understands business as well as he understands.
.well, hmmm. Rich really hasnt demonstrated understanding in any substantive area as of yet, has he?

Perhaps another healthy cut and paste session by Rich of the thoughts and words of others without any attribution is in our future?

Speaking of Walz being a sergeant major:

Even if he had fully carried out the duties, it is the most useless rank/position in the army.

If you try to explain what sergeants major do to a non-military person, you can’t. The closest civilian analogy is a co-opted trade union steward, but it’s not very close.

The military preaches about responsibility and authority, but then with the sergeant major program, they manage to completely divorce the two.

And it’s not even a case of “we’ve always done it this way - you just don’t get it.” The sergeant major program only dates back to Vietnam, and didn’t really pick up until the 70s/80s.

It’s kind of like the skinsuit metaphor - the US military saw the British regimental system with its sergeants major, and decided to just wear the skin without using any of the other ingredients of a true regimental system.

In a postmodern military where everyone is literate, you could accomplish the same goals by doing more direct commissions of enlisted people. They should probably be the majority of the officer corps. No need for bizarre parallel chains of concern.

And having command sergeants major at echelons above brigade/regiment is just losing the plot entirely.

I hope Achilles, John Henry, and other former enlisted weigh in.

JSM

(PS: Does anyone remember who my sergeant major was, in Mosby’s Rangers? Didnt think so. How about Patton’s CSM? Zhukov’s? Guderian’s? Incredible how they were able to accomplish anything….-j)

Scientists Develop New Compound That Kills Flesh-Eating and Other Drug-Resistant Bacteria

"Twenty years ago, professor Fredrik Almqvist, an organic chemistry professor at Umeå University in Sweden, was asked by his collaborating researchers at Washington University in St. Louis (WashU) to design a compound that would prevent urinary tract infections, which are often caused by Gram-negative bacterial infections.

Almqvist’s team created various compounds that were then screened for their effects.

Rather than controlling Gram-negative bacteria adherence, they found some of the compounds were highly effective at killing various Gram-positive bacteria. These included multidrug-resistant strains classified as concerning threats by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The researchers eventually singled out one compound, which they named PS757. Lab testing has shown PS757 to be effective against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecalis (VRE), multidrug-resistant Streptococcus pneumoniae, and erythromycin-resistant Streptococcus pyogenes (S. pyogenes), among others.

Now, researchers have studied the effect of PS757 on S. pyogenes, a potentially flesh-eating bacteria, in animals. S. pyogenes can cause a wide range of infections, from mild localized ones to potentially fatal soft-tissue infections, or necrotizing fasciitis.

Congressional committee demands answers on Army briefing that labeled pro-lifers ‘terrorists’

"The House Armed Services Committee has sent a letter to Army Secretary Christine Wormuth, seeking answers about why pro-lifers were smeared as terrorists in a recent briefing at an Army base. The Committee gave a deadline of two weeks for response.

Last week, photos of a slide presentation given to a group of soldiers at Fort Liberty in North Carolina were leaked; in the presentation, groups like National Right to Life and Operation Rescue were listed as potential terrorist groups. Bullet points on the slide said being “anti-abortion” and “Pro Life,” as well as opposing “Row v Wade [sic]” were potential indications of terrorist ideations. Examples of pro-life advocacy were also listed on the slide, such as demonstrations, protests, life chains, “the truth display” (displaying photos of abortion victims), and more. Counseling at pregnancy centers and on sidewalks was listed, and the s[l]ide even included pro-life license plates.

House Armed Services Committee Chairman Mike Rogers, personnel subcommittee Chairman Jim Banks, and other members of the House Armed Services Committee want to know how this was allowed to happen.

“Even more disturbing is who this training was conducted for: 47 uniformed soldiers tasked with guarding the access points for Fort Liberty, one of the Army’s largest military installations,” they wrote in the letter. “Training the installation gate guards to ensure that servicemembers and their families who have pro-life license plates should be considered suspicious and possible terroristic threats to the installation, is not only absurd but dangerous.

Continued...

"They further said Wormuth needs to answer the following 10 questions by July 25th:

1. What was the extent of the Directorate of Emergency Services leadership’s involvement in creating the presentation? Was this presentation approved by Directorate leadership? If not, who approved it?

2. Fort Liberty’s statement claims that the slides were not “vetted by the appropriate approval authorities.” Who were the appropriate approval authorities in this situation?

3. What are the processes in place for reviewing and approving the content of such briefings? And why were they not followed in this situation?

4. How long has Fort Liberty utilized these particular slides? How long has the Army utilized the standard deck of slides?

5. Where else have these altered slides been used? Have any other organizations within the Army utilized an altered deck of slides for their training?

6. Can you confirm that the Army has reviewed and approved all anti-terrorism guidance and training? Can you verify that none of this guidance and training violates, or encourages service members to violate, constitutionally protected speech?

7. Does the Army or Fort Liberty officials have any plans to issue a correction or disavowal to those service members who attended this briefing to instruct them that these pro-life organizations are not terrorist groups?

8. What is the Army’s process of categorizing civilian advocacy of constitutionally protected activities?

9. Does the Army consider participating in pro-life advocacy, or abortion-related counseling (sidewalks and crisis centers) in proximity to military installations to be terrorist activity?

10. Fort Liberty’s statement claims that future slides will be reviewed to “ensure they align with the current DoD anti-terrorism guidance.” What groups does the current antiterrorism guidance consider to be terrorist groups or other threats to base security?

On X, Banks tweeted, “The Biden DoD has created an environment where far-left wack jobs feel they can get away with teaching our troops that conservative Americans are terrorists and legitimate military targets. We are in dangerous territory.”

Banks further pointed out in a press release that these slides have been in circulation for a long period of time.

“These slides date back to at least last summer,” he said. “For over a year someone at Fort Liberty has been teaching our troops that pro-life Americans are terrorists, and the Biden Pentagon didn’t stop it until House Republicans and the public raised the alarm.

From my understanding- the whole Command SGT MAJ and navy equivalent Command Master Chief came from the submarine service. The most senior Chief Petty Officer on the sub was designated Chief of the Boat. Wasn't someone picked for the job- he was simply the most senior. He was tasked with various duties outside his actual rate (rate and rank are two different things...) and one included answering questions about how the crew felt about things. Well, the surface community decided to adopt this idea. But the senior CPO? No- someone had to be selected for such an important position! Then it ballooned and now COBs are selected too. Selection for the posts is entirely 100% political. All such positions could be eliminated and the military would function just fine.

Vice President Kamala Harris has chosen liberal Minnesota Governor Tim Walz to run as vice president on her 2024 Democratic ticket. Now that he has publicly been chosen, his political record is coming out of the woodwork; his stance on abortion being amongst the most shocking.

“Tim Walz may say that he’s just in favor of choice. But his record goes much further than that. He won’t even protect women against coerced or non-consenting abortions. He’ll deny them information about their options, remove basic health and safety regulations that apply in all other areas of medicine, bankroll abortions with taxpayer money, and defend abortion all the way to birth — and beyond” writes National Review.

Two bills signed by Walz in 2023 repealed Minnesota’s prohibition on coercing women into having abortions. They stripped out of the state’s laws the requirement that women give informed consent — indeed, any consent — to an abortion. They guaranteed an unqualified right to abortion up until the moment of birth, and even gutted protections for children born alive after abortion.

In January 2023, Walz and the state’s Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party [DFL] took their one-seat majority as a mandate to launch a comprehensive culture war. One of the cornerstones of that war was the “Protect Reproductive Options Act” or “PRO Act,” which passed in January 2023 and which Walz enthusiastically supported and signed into law. During the PRO Act debates, “Republicans tried and failed to pass dozens of amendments, including prohibiting third trimester abortions except when the mother’s life is at risk and requiring licensing of facilities providing the procedure.” Walz and his party beat them all back.
