"I really believe she wrote that" — I exclaimed when I read Melania's letter.

There are numerous signs of her authorship: Here's the line — in paragraph 5 — that prompted my exclamation: "A monster who recognized my husband as an inhuman political machine." A native speaker of English would not have used the word "recognized" like that. I'm sure many people are mocking her for that now — yes, even monsters can see that Trump is an inhuman political machine — but to me, it means she wrote it herself.

Later, she repeats the idea of Trump as a "political machine," but the idea is that he is human: He has a "human side" — "core facets" that include "laughter, love of music, and inspiration" — but these things are "buried below the political machine." That's an individual, perhaps awkward, way to say that the would-be assassin saw only the political surface and not the real human being.

Some other signs of her personal voice:
"the fabric of our gentle nation is tattered"

"attempted to ring out" (should that have been "wring out"?)
"Political concepts are simple when compared to us, human beings"

"American politics are only one vehicle that can uplift our communities"

"while we are here, in this earthly realm"

"Dawn is here again"

"love transcends"

"The winds of change have arrived"

AND: There's also, near the beginning of the letter: "When I watched that violent bullet strike my husband, Donald, I realized my life, and Barron’s life, were on the brink of devastating change." I don't think some ghostwriter would have come up with the idea of putting herself first and her son second.

That made me think of the old Lenny Bruce line about Jackie Kennedy, which was much more harsh but the same idea of thinking of yourself first: Jackie crawling out of the convertible was "hauling ass to save her ass."

CORRECTION: I had "nature" for "nation" in "the fabric of our gentle nation is tattered." "Nature" was more idiosyncratic, but she had "nation." Sorry. I do think "gentle nation" is unusual along with picturing it as tattered fabric.

The second page of the letter has no signature.

I know this is petty, and maybe I've been in legal too long, but it's such a shock to see a blank page of text floating around unidentified with no headers and footers.

There was no way to get it all on one page?

Melania Trump must have been thinking of Jackie Kennedy. How could she not? Lenny Bruce showed his inhumanity with that sick joke. Jackie Kennedy had just delivered a baby boy who lived for two excruciating days before dying. Two months later, she wasn't trying to escape that car under gunfire: she was trying to hold the broken pieces of her husband's skull together, to hold pieces of his brain inside his skull, and to get their staff to help hold his skull together. And her body was still recovering from making, and delivering, and losing another baby.

Think about that.

Comedians must have freedom of speech. No more or less than the rest of us: they also have to take responsibility for what they say.

Melania Trump must have been thinking about that pink dress Jackie Kennedy refused to remove all that day, throughout LBJ's appointment, though the dress was covered with blood and bits of her husband's brain. She later said she wanted the country to see what was done to her husband. She broke through politics to humanity.

Melania wrote a beautiful statement. It does read like something written by an intelligent person for whom English is not a first language. Or maybe not even a third, for she speaks five languages.

Remarkable that she has been known for her silence and her desire for privacy all these years, and the first time she feels she must crack open the door to her marriage and feelings, this extraordinary and deeply personal pronouncement emerges.

Stop dehumanizing my husband.

Very classy, very powerful, and heartfelt. I think a lot of people are re-evaluating her today.

Unable to defend his stupid claims that Scott Ritter is not a pedophile and that the U.S. blew up the Nova Kakhovka dam, Achilles calls me a cocksucker (11:59pm). That's a stupid lie - I don't swing that way - as well as a bigoted one.

Does Achilles think you can deduce someone's sexual practices from the quality of his arguments about Ukraine? If that were possible, it would only show that he has lately moved on from anilingus to out-and-out coprophagy.

Evidence and logic as learned at Trump University:

Rusty: 2 =2 = 5
Mutaman: I don't think so- can you prove that?
Rusty: Do your own research. You have a computer.

Lack of a proper education- can't do a thing about it.
