"As a Black woman, I am bracing for the inevitable racist and sexist attacks on her and have mixed emotions about us asking her to sprint a marathon and do something unprecedented in an impossibly short timeline."

Said Jasmine Clark, a Georgia state representative, quoted in "Harris seized the moment. Can she translate that energy to victory? After an extraordinary debut as a presidential candidate, Vice President Harris must now prove she can wage a winning campaign to defeat former president Donald Trump" (WaPo).

"Sprint a marathon" is a good expression, better than, say, "backwards in high heels," because Harris has been tasked to accomplish in 100 days what is normally done in something more like 1,000 days. Now, the competition was swept out of her path — by others. And the limited time we have to listen to her may work to her advantage, but Jasmine Clark is on her side, and "sprint a marathon" aptly expresses how she feels.

It made me think of the famous Lyndon Johnson line:
"You do not take a person who, for years, has been hobbled by chains and liberate him, bring him up to the starting line of a race and then say, 'you are free to compete with all the others,' and still justly believe that you have been completely fair."
Now, I think Kamala Harris has led a very privileged life, and she's been boosted ahead of others, not held back, and I don't want her or her supporters to play on our empathy about race and sex to excuse her shortcomings. But she is beginning the race at the starting line when her opponent has been running for years. And yet that might be to her advantage. If she'd been exposed as the frontrunner candidate all these months, she might have many more strikes against her (if I may mix the sports metaphors).

One thing that's held against her — I see this all the time — is her awkward statement about equity:
"So there’s a big difference between equality and equity. Equality suggests, 'oh everyone should get the same amount.' The problem with that, not everybody’s starting out from the same place. So if we’re all getting the same amount, but you started out back there and I started out over here, we could get the same amount, but you’re still going to be that far back behind me. It’s about giving people the resources and the support they need, so that everyone can be on equal footing, and then compete on equal footing. Equitable treatment means we all end up in the same place."
She was carelessly loping along in a race to paraphrase LBJ and she took a header and fell near the finish line.

However, when you ignore the lies and realize she failed to do anything about the border, but she was successful in raising $41 million to bail out people who looted and burned towns across the United States; then you'll realize Harris started long ago.

If you run a race, you run a race. No additional talent needed. The presidency is about being actually smart, which Kalama shows no signs of.

Women's talents are the wrong sort for the Presidency in the first place - some intuition for perverse consequences is needed, which women lack - and Kamala is stupid in addition.

Unfortunately women vote, so there you are. It's not a race running dynamic though.

Kamala Harris didn't appear out of nowhere a week ago. She's been campaigning for reelection for months now as part of the current administration where's been serving as VP for the last 3+ years. She has no real differences with Biden on the issues so it's a fairly seamless transition for her. She's using his campaign headquarters, his list of donors, his policies.

The advantage she has over Trump in mainstream media coverage more than makes up for whatever benefit he's had from starting to campaign earlier than she did.

First you have to state what the goal is. What overall quality of life are you shooting for? Then you can evaluate equality - of opportunity, not amount - vs equity.

Also, to Jasmine, how do you suggest we critique Harris so that we don’t look or sound racist and misogynist to you? There are a lot of us who aren’t Black that deserve a voice in this election. Maybe embrace the process so we all have equal standing for feedback.

Harris started running for president no later than 2019, 5 years ago. She presumably gave it her all; that the voters wanted none of it does not mean that she is now a rando picked out of the population to run against an old pro.

Harris has known for years that Biden is decrepit mentally and physically (as has his wife and entire circle). Being a "heartbeat away from the presidency" was a cliche for every VP in my lifetime; even the old presidents (Reagan, Trump) were far more vigorous than old Joe has been at any time during his term. For Harris over the past 3.5 years, she has seen how Biden's decrepitude has progressed. One does not run for president in 2019, then lose that ambition and resign oneself to playing in the warm bucket of spit that is the vice presidency. Harris has been hoping and praying for this situation for 5 years or more.
If she is not ready to go, with a mental if not written blueprint of every move from now until November, she is as stupid as I think she is.

Top level marathon runners are pretty much sprinting the whole time. Completing a marathon in 2:15 - a little off the record time - requires running 100 m every 20 seconds, which is half as fast as the record time for the 100 meter.

I have to laugh, and rather heartily, at the idea that 100 days is somehow "too short" for effective campaigning for the top office. Anybody who lives in, or has lived in other English-speaking countries -- as I did for over 20 years -- is fully accustomed to national campaigns for Prime Minister which last for 35 to 50 days [and at the extremes] 28 days or maybe 60 days. These also include every seat in Parliament.

When, in 1975, the Queen sacked her out-of-control Australian government, she gave the Aussies 6 weeks to "sort it out". In the Canadian election of 1993, the campaign lasted 5 weeks from the Crown dropping the "Writ of Election" until the reigning government were trounced so thoroughly that they were left only with **two** seats in Parliament. They readjusted, and within ten years returned to form a government which gave the country 15 years of balanced budgets and surpluses., with repeated re-election.

AND, in Canada at least, during m time there [I'm a dual citizen] the voter registration lists are reformulated by a house-to-house survey during which you must prove Canadian citizenship. Except for deployed military and certified election workers, voting is paper-ballot, day-of election only. We expats or temporary overseas peeps get a **paper** form to return -- three levels of anonymity -- and it is counted only on election night.

We might not LIKE the results, but **nodody** questions them.

I was thinking about keeping a tally of the anti-semites on Althouse but I'd rather not waste my time.

Today there is the comment about the JEW who got an Indian to raise his Jewish children. Never mind the fact that the Emhoff children were not raised as Jews and neither of them identifies as Jewish or with the Jewish people.

Here's another one: this interesting comment by Achilles: (this was on the thread on the Last Supper/Dionysys "very shocking & disrespectful to make light of the Feast of Dionysus; deeply offensive to those who have devoted their lives to feasting, drinking, & salacious behavior.") I don't see any connection at all. But here it is:

I think what he is trying to say is that the Jews do not represent moral truth and are working to keep separated the true moral people, who are the Christians and the Muslims. He is claiming that the Jews are the cause of all the problems in the world. That's the typical accusation of Jew haters.

Also typical of the bizarre beliefs held by Jew haters: they deny that Christianity and Islam derive their morality from Judaism. Christ clearly stated that and the Quran quotes extensively from the Bible.

And that is just today's sampling. We've seen all kinds of theories about Jews ("they are whiners" etc.) which belong in the garbage bin. We saw a bunch the other day who are fans of Nick Fuentes who somehow argued that Jews were behind the assassination attempt on Donald Trump. It's all too absurd up to repeat. But I can see there are people here who are anxious to express their hatred.

I'm not interested in engaging with anti-semites or Jew haters. I will tolerate them. But I do wonder if they are ignored will they take that as approval? I guess we'll have to see how much more they try to slip into the comments if they believe they have approval.

All the ads coming from the Trump campaign are focused on things Harris has said and done.

I keep seeing Harris in campaign donation requests, i.e., YouTube ads. If all she's gonna do is use her funds to pay to ask for more, to heck with her.
