This made me laugh - and reminded me from a bit in the old skit show Almost Live, which came out of Seattle (I think Bill Nye got his start on it?), entitled something like Summer in Seattle.

So, a bunch of Seattleites are huddled together, bundled up in clothes for a cold, rainy winter (and I have experienced little less pleasant in my life than working outside all day in 36° rain). The sky is darkly overcast.

But then! The clouds part - the sun begins to peek through - The Mountain appears in the distance -

Everyone starts stripping off layers. They pull sunglasses* out of their coat pockets and drop the coats on the ground. Under the winter gear, they're all in shorts, tank tops, and bathing suits, and they blink at the now-bright sky like moles.

And then... the clouds drift back together. The light goes out of the sky. The rain begins, and everyone sighs and starts putting everything back on.

*I read somewhere that inhabitants of the Pacific Northwest own more sunglasses, on average, than people from anywhere else in the US. It seems that they misplace them all the time, but the angle of the sun is so low, even in summer, that it's absolutely blinding when it is out. Anecdotally, this certainly seemed to be the case for us when we lived there.; 11/6/23, 7:36 AM

Windshield wipers on high, the tires making a "scree" sound from the rain filling up the ruts in the road. The rear wiper was also on full. The weather at Cape Foulweather (US 101) illustrated why it's called Cape Foulweather: Fog and driving rain.

I filled up the car with gas at the Costco in Salem. The gas station is divided into full service/self service islands. No wait on the self service island. Pulled in, filled up, left, all in 5-minutes. Last year, we would have sat for 15 minutes before making it to an island, then spent 10 minutes filling up while the attendant scuttled between pumps, taking cards, running the pumps and delivering the receipts.

A labor union is trying to qualify an initiative to get rid of self-serve. More minimum wage jobs if the voters vote to remove self serve.

We stay at a time share called Schooner Landing on the north edge of Newport, overlooking the Pacific. Several of the original building have been torn down because of land slippage towards the ocean. We have a good view of the Pacific and the storms coming in.; 11/6/23, 7:57 AM

Debate intensifies over release of Covenant School shooter's manifesto: A quest for prevention or potential threat?

"In Tennessee, a request for police to release a school shooter's private writings has morphed into a complex multiparty legal fight. With no national standard over how to treat such records, both sides claim their position is in the public interest.

We could all be one step closer to learning what is in the Covenant School Shooter's manifesto.

Monday a three judge panel heard arguments from those who want the writing's released, and others who say that would only do more damage.

The appeals hearing stems from a lawsuit filed by the National Police Association against Nashville and Davidson County after a Freedom of Information Act request seeking records was rejected.

Early on in the investigation, Metro Nashville Police Chief John Drake said the shooter left behind a journal in the car at the school parking lot. The lawsuit filed on behalf of the National Police Association seeks to have the writings of shooter released to the public.

The agency asked for the public release of the manifesto, along with all records, emails, texts and communication within the Metro Police Department about the shooter.

Now, six months after the shooter claimed six lives at the Covenant School in Nashville, the fight over the manifesto's release continues.

Both sides believe they will be able to prevent future school shootings with their arguments.

The National Police Association and the Tennessee Firearms Association believe that by releasing the documents, policies can be made to prevent them from happening again.

"The arguments that my friends on the other side make are almost entirely and transparently policy arguments. They describe interests, compelling policy interests," says Paul Krog, appellant.
On the other side, many families of the Covenant School as well as the Metro Nashville Police Department believe releasing the documents could inspire other potential school shooters to do the same.

"There's a very real risk that if the shooter's writings are released, one or more children may harm themselves. It has happened time and time in the past from school shootings and we have a unique situation here to try to prevent these writings from coming out to try to protect these children," says Eric G. Osborne, appellee. "The court should let them intervene in this case. And they don't ever articulate here today or in their briefs how any of those interests are reflected in a cognizable legal claim."
A brother of one of the victims told one of our affiliate stations, WKRN in Nashville, he would like the manifesto to be released.

"For me personally, not knowing the shooters true motives leaves a large void in my heart and in my brothers story," Reginald Hill told WKRN.

Welcome to the rest of the country (well, except New Jersey). Last time we were in Oregon, self serve wasn't an option.

On the other side of the country, we got off I-84 eastbound, and pulled into a gas station thinking we were still in NY. The attendant told us NJ law required him to run the card and pump the gas - he was borderline rude so instead of putting it on the card, we paid cash.; 11/6/23, 10:25 AM

Narr said...: In 2018 my wife and I traveled around the NYC-NJ-PA region, and it was a real culture shock to pull in for gas somewhere near Newark and find that I wasn't allowed to pump my own.

I only learned that they weren't the only state like that when Oregon caught up to the 1980s recently.

The Tranifesto should be released in full right away. It's hard for me to imagine a justification for keeping it secret.; 11/6/23, 6:54 PM
