I read elsewhere that various "sanctuary cities" are requesting that Uncle Moneybags take money from others and give to them to help with their crises housing and feeding "migrants". Because... surprise!- it's expensive!
I brewed "Lenin's Tomb" today. It's a Russian Imperial Stout. A great beer for the winter season. Nominal 8% ABV. There's 16-lb of grain and 6-oz of hops. That's about double of a non-imperial stout. It'll ferment for about 10 days before I transfer it to the keg for secondary fermentation and dispensing. I'm fermenting it at 58F to slow down the fermentation rate.
We have an ESB in primary fermenter right now! Went in with a friend as, although we've been brewing for thirty years, this is our first all-grain batch (we've been brewing partial mash for all but the first year of that) and that's all he does.
He distills any batch he decides he doesn't like. (He's a ChemEng. He doesn't even have a beer while he's brewing.) No reason to expect whammies here; it's pretty standard English style ESB and we are all experienced in proper sanitation. But I'm still excited, as we haven't brewed in a while!
Narr - Car repair expenses have become outrageous. My car is near its end and I think I will just say screw it and not have a car, except for the wife's. I work from home, so why the heck not.
We had a layer of snow 2days ago, but by yesterday afternoon it had melted. It’s been in the 20s waking up. Seasonal change- so climate change hasn’t gotten that far, yet. Yay. Duh.
More Democratic election fraud. Everyday it gets worse, and yet, there are still idiots who think 2020 was not fraudulent. Check out what happened in Bridgeport Connecticut yesterday, and now THIS from Springfield Mass. The Democrats figured they were home free, and nobody would do anything, just like what happened in 2020....
"The judge was right that what happened was “shocking” election fraud. It’s morally wrong, grossly illegal, and truly destroys democracy. And yet, in the wake of the 2020 election, judges in all the contested jurisdictions across America countenanced precisely the same provable fraud. They did so because, abandoning their obligations to the Constitution and the law, they either liked the outcome or feared the mob."

I've been brewing all grain now for nearly a year. Before that, it was the mixed method, steeping grain than adding malts. I started brewing in 1996.
I didn't have room nor power to do the all grain method. I dedicated part of the shop in our new house to brewing with a 240V circuit for the digibrewer. The digibrewer controls the temperature during mashing and boiling. Well worth it.
"Dozens of protestors were led away in zip tie handcuffs by Philadelphia police into waiting police buses as part of a huge demonstration that started hours earlier inside and outside 30th Street Station Thursday.
Hundreds of activists and religious leaders from across the city took over the train station beginning at rush hour. The interfaith protestors chanted and sang, while sharing personal stories as they demanded a ceasefire in Israel and Gaza.
"We are here to say death will not bring about justice and redemption. We are here to ask the U.S. government to use its power and its money to call for a ceasefire and to end the violence in Gaza," Rabbi Ari Lev Fernari, Senior Rabbi with Kol Tzedek Synagogue, stated. Many in the group prepared to stay as long as possible, including a student who attends Swarthmore College.
"As a Jew, when we say never again, never forget, we mean for everyone," Noah Caper said. "We are willing to risk arrest. I have water. I have food. I plan to stay here."
[There is] a huge police presence both inside and outside the station, where hundreds more demonstrators were also protesting at one of the entrances."
remember back when Hamas was beheading israeli children? and people (here!) were saying; BULL! there's No Evidence, it's ALL JUST A HOAX! and then posted PIX.. and people (HERE!) said: Those are adult beheadings! child beheading is a HOAX! and then posted PIX of headless children.. And people (HERE!) said: Just because those kids heads are missing DON'T mean they were beheaded... child beheading is a HOAX!!!
“Right now we are in Kibbutz Nirim, praise God!” Malek said. “Our brothers from the Al Qassem battalion entered [the homes] of three settlers. They cut off their heads with knives, and shot them in the head.” Hamza responded, “Allahu Akbar and praise God! Malek, take photos of the heads as the guys are playing with them and let them play with them [the heads] on the ground.”
“[I’ll] send them right away, Hamza,” Malek responded. “Right away.”
But, not to worry.. According people (HERE!) It's ALL FINE, because
"KAHULUI — The U.S. Coast Guard has removed 79 vessels inside and outside of Lahaina Harbor and is looking to have its cleanup of fire damage and debris done around early December, although it could take longer, an official said Wednesday.
“We are anticipating to conclude our operations by Dec. 5, but it could be slightly delayed based on the rest of the work that we are anticipating completing,” said Cmdr. Melanie Burnham, incident commander for the Emergency Support Function No. 10, which is assessing the pollution and discharges as well as handling sunken vessels and debris left by the August fire.
So far seven vessels have left under their own power and have been returned to their owners, she said. Owners of 51 vessels removed from the harbor were given the option to come see their vessels to take notes and photos if they wanted.
She said there are still 10 vessels that are either cleared to leave the harbor as they are still floating, or are still being assessed by their owners, operators and insurance.
There are four vessels left that they know of that are sunken or whose final status is still being determined, Burnham said."
We also steered clear of all-grain brewing because of the extra time and space commitment. Having now gone through the mash part with our friend, it's feeling much more doable.
The thing is, when we started brewing (1992 for us!), it was because we couldn't afford the beer we wanted to drink, and because there was so little craft beer available, even in northern California, where we lived at the time. We then moved to Seattle and brewed less for a few years because we could walk to the original Red Hook plus two other craft breweries from our house. Then we moved to Texas and brewed a bunch. Then, Pennsylvania, the outer burbs of Philly, and we brewed a good bit there because we were wrangling three young kids and most of the craft places (besides Victory) were in the city, so just getting there was costly in time and babysitting.
Now we're back in Texas and can afford whatever we want, and there's craft beer every-freaking-where, so I've only brewed a few times since moving back. But I do enjoy the process, even though the result is less important to me now.
"When I retired in '15, we trimmed down to one car. Having one car is mildly inconvenient at times."
When we retired our need for 2 vehicles increased greatly. Granted, when we were working we were both able to walk to work (which was great). Now, my wife is going somewhere in town everyday. I need a truck to service my recreational activities.
I am dreading the impending all-EV apocalypse. Hoping it doesn't come to pass.
I use a DigiBoil brew vessel. Everything is done with just one piece of equipment.
- Steep the grain - Remove the grain - Heat to a boil - Boil and add the hops as required - Cool the wort with a copper coil water cooler - Drain the wort into the primary fermenter (a 5-gal glass carboy)
It takes about 4 to 5 hours start to stop, including cleanup.
I can't see how the EV revolution/apocalypse can come to fruition--especially not for the next few decades when revolutions/apocalypses will likely take more traditional forms.
His infatuation with EVs is one of the few things that make me question Musk's acumen in some areas.

"All-EV" will, soon enough, morph into "Not enough juice to go around, so not everybody gets to have a car/truck." Most people (including probably you) will be in the "not everybody" group.

Who'da thunk it?
Speaking of expensive. $2450.00 in car work today.
But I ate TWO of their donuts, so there is that.

It took two scientists 20 YEARS to take down Sudafed and Benadryl because they don't work. What does that say about America? That it takes that long to get rid of something that doesn't work?
It says we're more willing to let American citizens endure even massive levels of fraud then we admit.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) released radio communications between Hamas terrorists during the October 7 massacre where they admitted to beheading entire families and desecrating their bodies.
Hamza told Malek to take pictures of the terrorists “playing” with the severed heads of the innocent Israeli civilians.
“Right now we are in Kibbutz Nirim, praise God!” Malek said. “Our brothers from the Al Qassem battalion entered [the homes] of three settlers. They cut off their heads with knives, and shot them in the head.”

I also confess that I let some necessary work slide and it has caught up with me.
