Bill Maher is one of the O.G. Godfathers of leftist smug, just like John Stewart. His agastness at the end result of 30 years of intellectual stagnation masquerading as smugness will not protect him or others like him from the criticism he so righteously deserves.

Eff you Bill. Gooderer and harderer.

Good for her. And their head shaking was surreal.

On the one hand, they basically said Trump violated political norms and it wasn't criminal. While defending a 4+ year investigation by the FBI/DOJ, special prosecutor, and spying on the President but the intelligence branch.

So one the one hand, nothing Trump did was ever proven as criminal.

On the other hand, people investigating Trump was proven to have done criminal things (i.e FISA court).

And yet they still defend it. Unreal.

The Mueller report produced 37 indictments; concluded that 2016 Russian interference was 'sweeping'; and identified numerous links between Russia and the Trump campaign. Mueller also stated that if they could have exonerated Trump they would have done; and concluded that on many occasions, Trump and/or his people obstructed justice. Did the so-called Durham report negate any of these findings?

I certainly agree that, at times, the FBI and others made mistakes to a greater or lesser extent. I'm not excusing that conduct but isn't it true that in any human undertaking, mistakes will be made? And whatever errors were made by FBI pale in comparison to the behavior they were investigating.

The bottom line is this: has the Durham report resulted in any negation of the resulting indictments and convictions or the conclusions of the Mueller report?

rhhardin said...

They weren't crushed. She isn't reading the reaction. It was more of the shouting-over genre only without the shouting-over but just shouting.

They on the other hand were reasonable-voiced.

She'd have to counter it with the same technique to get anywhere.

Vicki Hearne's technique: get them to admit one mistake and comment that mistakes with things that follow from them are tricky things. Let them go along with its being tricky because it's a clever remark.

That is a great illustration. These two guys are just liars or are going to ludicrous ends to insulate themselves from cognitive dissonance. In other words, Democrats.

There are no issues left. Even WaPo and CNN confirmed that the Clinton Campaign funded and planted the Steele dossier. The multimillion dollar Mueller investigation found "no evidence" that Trump colluded with Russia. None! Nada!

A real fundamental problem with media

what she calls a "circle jerk"

is that these major newrooms are based in NYC and LA -- very liberal places -- and it's effectively a one-party state. They only hire people from elite universities, and HR people make sure its Democrats, Democrats, and more Democrats.

They're no diversity of thought, diversity of opinion, diversity of understandings. It's the same at elite universities where a lot of these news executives get hired. They have crazy narratives, and nobody to push back, and they just go deeper and deeper into the madness.

What was the collusion? The only thing remotely close to the collusion is Trump joking that if Russia had Hillary's email, they should release them. Even if you accept that as not a joke, it is a very reasonable request from a candidate of the opposition. That's not collusion, that's "if you got the cards, then show your cards". That Bill Maher still believes in Trump/Russian collusion despite all the investigation tells me he doesn't care about the truth. The only collusion Mueller proved was a Russia ad buy on Facebook, that was almost entirely BLM propaganda.

As for MKH crushing anything, I think they she influenced anyone. As for Sam Harris, he doesn't care. He made it clear it was worth lying about Trump to keep Trump out of office. Sam Harris lies for the opportunity to defeat someone else and is fine with it, which is why nobody else should trust him.

Dick above claims 37 indictments, which to get that number, you have to include Michael Flynn. Dick asks, did Durham report in any negation of those indictments, while forgetting that the FBI admitted it fabricated the lie that supposedly Flynn lied, altered sworn testimony, and used a threat of prosecuting Flynn's son (for a law that they won't even prosecute Hunter Biden for clearly violating) in order to coerce a plea bargain. Yet people like Dick still believes all the indictments, while dismissing the Durham report.

Just asking questions (Jaq) said...

"concluded that 2016 Russian interference was 'sweeping';"

"Sweeping" in a big word, should be easily listed, all of the ways that Russia interfered in the US elections

We know that Ukraine interfered by "leaking" fake evidence of corruption to the New York Times in August of 2016, so how about one thing that Russia did that was bigger than what Ukraine did right out in the open, forcing the resignation of Trump's campaign manager.

https://www.nytimes.com/2016/08/15/us/politics/what-is-the-black-ledger.html

And if you are going to say that Manafort was sent to jail anyway, despite the fact that the stuff fed to the New York Times by a Ukrainian politician who had met in the White House with the "impeachment whistleblower" just a few months before, was all fake and never appeared in the trail, how about listing the crimes he committed that Hunter Biden hasn't openly committed as well, things that are usually handled with fines, unless of course, Trump can be smeared.

The reason that Russia was accused of election interference is because Ukraine was guilty of it in spades. No other reason. It was all made up. "They always accuse you of what they are doing" is a truism because it's propaganda 101.

The Crack Emcee said...

As Turncoat Don said, she "tries". MKH was fine, but I notice Bill Maher and Harris were still shaking their heads as the clip ended. Bill Maher is the (pre-pandemic) anti-vaxxer who I watch mostly to see hard truths diminished and/or dismissed. It's his thing. Remember this moment?

Reality's made a previous appearance (through shows like Bill Maher's to America) but - despite the "Real Time" or whatever branding -he, and all the other celebrities, are just not about that.

Rich-

“And whatever errors were made by FBI pale in comparison to the behavior they were investigating.”

Is that the standard now? Joe Biden’s son took millions of dollars from Ukraine; now Biden is sending tens of billions to Zelenskyy. Given the magnitude of the accusations against Joe, you should be okay with Hunter Biden ending up Gitmo until he confesses.

Saint Croix said...

"Trump is Hitler," they said. His daughter is Jewish, his son-in-law is Jewish, I don't think I've ever heard Trump say anything remotely anti-Semitic.

They abandoned Hitler after it was obvious that he's not Hitler.

The historic charge against every Republican -- racist who hates black people -- doesn't work with Trump. Trump is a guy who wanted to invite Al Sharpton to the Republican convention(!)

He hates illegal immigrants, of course, but most Americans are not fans of illegal immigration, and so that demonizing ploy doesn't work.

So they went from calling him "Hitler" to "spy for Putin." And that was during his whole presidency. I'm embarrassed for Maher that he still believes that shit. "The Steele Dossier was true," Maher says, like he's worshipping at the altar of Hillary Clinton. Maher prides himself on his cynicism. And he comes across as gullible as shit.

You can't go from "Hitler" (whiff) to "spy for Putin" (whiff) to "document thief" and expect Republicans to play along with your bullshit.

Maher, Harris,..., and Rich...Just.Can't.Let.It.Go. All the confirmations of the true source of the dossier, the blatant lying to the FISA court, and the lack of any evidence of collusion, as ultimately admitted by even the NYT and the WAPo. And still the lame "some of it was true". Really, what parts were still true, Rich? No generalized assertions. List them. But thank you for the "mistakes were made".

We get it. The cognitive dissonance would be utterly ego-shattering.

Why is Chuck using the new moniker "Rich" here? Exact same writing style, same TDS, etc.

BTW, I love how criminal investigations in Chuck's world have a third possible outcome in addition to the normal guilty / not guilty dichotomy. I remember this "exoneration" nonsense from years back when the Mueller thing was still front page news.

Blogger Rich,

To say "whatever errors were made by FBI pale in comparison to the behavior they were investigating" is completely opposite of the truth. I'm not going to get into the weeds on this but, when asked about Russian interference, Obama said it didn't add up to shit. And the kind of actual leads the FBI were following was the Carter Paige-type bullshit that's since blown up in their faces. They immediately went after one guy after he had one drink with one person one time, like he was a traitor selling government secrets. And you do realize the damage to our image, internationally, after ALMOST A DECADE of wrongly calling the president a traitor, illegitimate, peeing on hookers in Russian hotel rooms, etc, too, right?

The bottom line is fanatics, seen and unseen, are currently holding the levers of power, also seen and unseen.

Original Mike said...

"The Mueller report produced 37 indictments"

Please refresh my memory. What was the biggest one (or biggest 2 or 3 if you like)?

Just asking questions (Jaq) said...

Remember when Hillary Clinton's campaign manager had 75K shares in a "green energy" subsidiary of Russian owned Gazprom, awarded to him "for services rendered," and those shares became totally worthless two days after Hillary lost the election? The purpose of setting up a "green energy" company in a foreign country is to soak up US grants, and the purpose of having a prominent politician involved in it is to steer those grants to your company.

Paul Pelosi Jr founded such a corporation, then had his name scrubbed from the founding papers, and the company set to work soaking up green energy grants in Ukraine, not unlikely that Paul's mom had some influence there. If you have ever founded a corporation, you might wonder why a corporation would continue to exist, but one of its founding officers gets scrubbed from the founding documents. It's a real head scratcher... Almost as if they realized it was too transparent.

Then guess who was Dianne Feinstein's ever present companion and guardian, taking care of her right up until she cast that last vote on the day of her timely demise? Why it was Nancy Pelosi's daughter! I am shocked!

But Trump is a criminal for an imaginary crime with imaginary victims, of which he need not even be conscious of to be guilty of it.

That's why all this: "Gosh, you're being so unreasonable. Look at the facts" crap doesnt work.

Russiagate was a lie. Trump never colluded with anyone. It was all made up by liars and financed by Hillary's campaign.

but Harris and Maher wont admit that. so they pull the "Well, some of it was true". Yeah, i guess. You can say that about anything. How many lies are 100 percent false. But its just a bad faith response. You pull when you don't want to give someone ONE GODDAMN INCH.

Its why all rhetorical efforts to meet the left half-way are useless. You keep granting them half their premises or agreeing that "Yeah trump is bad but..", and they wont' do the same. Its alway 100 percent Trump hate. Or 100 Percent [insert leftwing party line position].

“It wasn’t all a lie!”

This is pathetic beyond belief!

I am no Legal professional, I just read and watch Court dramas and Detective stories for entertainment. One of the common themes in that genre is unraveling of Lies and one of the common notions is that a Lie is the more convincing the more elements of Truth it contains. Perfect Lie would contain 99% of Truth with an insidious switch that puts things upside down and make people believe the false Conclusion.

For example, in one story some woman was telling detectives an absolutely convincing story how she was a victim of some heinous crime. They checked all the details and everything rang absolutely true. The twist was that this woman was not a victim but the perpetrator of the crime. Her story was entirely convincing because almost all the details were true and independently verifiable.

So if a Lie incorporates some facts is meaningless, it is still a Lie if it tries to advance a deceiving Conclusion.

"Russian collusion" was not even a 'good' Lie at all. It was not supported by any real facts, it was not devious or intricate by any measure. There was only a predetermined Conclusion that was advanced simply by relentless repetition in the corrupt Media.

I don't think she changed any minds, but her opening point that Russiagate is the reason people believe or at least stay loyal to Trump is completely true. To make it effective, of course, you have to - in a simple way - take down the left's denial that the Russia investigations were meritless and knowingly dishonest from the start.

A side point, the impact of Russiagate on Trump's presidency and credibility can even be seen, by Trump supporters, as part of the larger process by which the 2020 election was rigged or stolen. Along with, say, the disinformation campaign on the Hunter Biden laptop.

So the thing that surprises me is how weak the defense of the Russian collusion position is by Bill Maher and Sam Harris. Bill's producers communicate with every guest before they come on and will ask them what they want to talk about and will specifically tell them Bill wants to talk about X and Y. Bill, and presumably Sam, had to know the Russian Collusion talk was going to come up but their defense felt weak. They didn't exactly roll over and give up, but it felt like a C effort. I kind of remember a clip also from Bill Maher's show with Matt Welch from Reason. In that exchange Matt Welch basically asserted that the whole Russian Collusion story was a media hoax. I don't remember Bill pushing back against that hard either. If you wanted to shore up belief in the Russian Collusion story it would seem you would have the opposite setup where the person making the argument it was a hoax would be the one giving the C effort. A performance that while weak is still strong enough to not be accused of being a straw-man And the defenders of the idea that there was Russian collusion would be giving the A performance. I wonder if Bill is doing this to try and build a more centrist audience. I think Bill looks at where he is now and where Joe Rogan is now and wishes he could trade places.

Maher: "Yes, and Mueller never said [Trump] was innocent."

Okay, my progressive brethren, let me once again state facts you learned (or at least were exposed to) long ago in elementary school:

In the US, once accused, you are considered innocent until proven guilty.

So, Mr. Maher, Trump is absolutely innocent, since Mueller declined to prosecute him for alleged RussiaGate crimes against the US, and no court of law found him guilty of RussiaGate crimes. Mueller essentially declared him innocent by declining to prosecute, let alone convict.

So get used to the word "innocent." It applies here.

"I don't think she changed any minds, but her opening point that Russiagate is the reason people believe or at least stay loyal to Trump is completely true. And potentially important politically, because it's a very simple point."

You are correct, Paul from Minneapolis.

Every single non-GOPe Republican candidate for any major office should continually hammer the point that Russiagate was a lie perpetrated on all of us by the Uniparty, which was used to destroy Trump's presidency and the lives and careers of those who tried to fight against it. With the eager cooperation and facilitation of the supposedly trustworthy agents of Law and Government, including the FBI, the CIA, and the FISA court, as well as 95% of our supposedly unbiased press corps. And make their opponents own it.

I am not "Loyal to Trump." If I thought that any other candidate could effectively advance the message and policy that we are governed by an obvious and shameless cabal of absolutely corrupt oligarchs who need to be challenged and checked with all the force that a President can bring to the task, I would vote for that person. I am not sure that Trump is that guy, either. But he is undeniably the primary victim and opponent of the cabal, and the loudest and most effective force against it.

Only two things are certain from this thread.

1) Someone is paying Rich 10 cents per post.
2) Rich stores the coins up his ass.

Nothing illegal, but Trump violated "The Norms! The Norms!" How pathetic for a comedian who made his bones pretending to be politically incorrect. Pretty revealing what pussies both these "independent thinkers" show themselves to be in this excerpt.

I seem to recall that one such tiny Russian consultancy hired a team of crack lawyers that turned on the Feds and demanded discovery, demanded to see the evidence, and asked for an expedited trial. To which the Feds with Robert Mueller immediately turned tail and fled. 'Run away, Run away!'

"Brave, Brave Sir Robert.
Bravely Ran away....."

I had felt sorry for Mary Katharine Ham. I feel like she knows what a destructive, criminal, malignant force that Trump is within the Republican Party, conservatism and the nation. But my presumption was that she had to toe the line with Trump loyalty because her job was within the right-wing media opinion industry. Her first husband was killed in a hit-and-run incident while bicycling. So I had thought that as a single mom, her toadying for Trump was a financial necessity for her.

Now, as of 2020, Mary Katharine Ham is newly remarried. (Her second husband is not a public figure, as is his wife.) Perhaps her financial needs still require her to cater to TrumpWorld. I don't know. But it is sad to see.

But, Mahar did get DeSantis to say Trump "lost" the 2020 election. DeSantis not willing to touch voter fraud we all know is real, makes him a no go for me. Shame.

I noted that too, Gusty. I really had hope for DeSantis and didn't want to believe all the voices saying that he was owned by GOPe now.... Well, that was a very GOPe answer.

The russian hoax was just a version of the birth certificate hoax but for democraticals.

Except the birth certificate hoax was ALSO started by Hillary Clinton or her team...."Democraticals" are corrupt, and will do and say anything to get what they want.

"The Mueller report produced 37 indictments; concluded that 2016 Russian interference was 'sweeping'; and identified numerous links between Russia and the Trump campaign. Mueller also stated that if they could have exonerated Trump they would have done; and concluded that on many occasions, Trump and/or his people obstructed justice. Did the so-called Durham report negate any of these findings?"

And yet none of it found it's way to the articles of impeachment.

There was Russian collusion. The Clinton campaign hired Perkins Coie, which then hired Fusion GPS, a research and intelligence firm, who used a Russian who was under investigation by the CIA to conduct opposition research on Republican candidate Donald Trump’s ties to Russia. He made it all up and has said so. They paid $130,000 in fines.

It was leaked to the media who knew it was a lie & printed it. The printed lies were used as FISA evidence.

The only Russian "interference" was supporting BOTH pro & anti Trump demonstrations outside of Trump tower.

They weren't crushed. She isn't reading the reaction. It was more of the shouting-over genre only without the shouting-over but just shouting.

They on the other hand were reasonable-voiced.

You need to go back and watch the clip again. Their heads literally exploded.

Robert Mueller was well past his sell-by date by the time he made his appearance to defend the report. He was nothing more than the public face of that farce; Andrew Weissmann was the true evil brain behind the operation.

Anyone unfamiliar with Mueller's FBI career might do well to research his less than stellar tenure in the Boston regional office, where the cultivation of underworld informants and crooked FBI G-men became an art. Whitey Bulger, and the rest of the Winter Hill Gang were special pets of the FBI and allowed to freely roam the countryside enjoying the Bureau's protection.

In the 90s, Mueller's FBI had the opportunity to right a decades-old wrong regarding the wrongful lifetime convictions of four men on the sham testimony and lies of one Joseph "The Animal" Barboza and Vincent "The Bear" Flemmi (brother of Stephen, also part of the Winter Hill Gang) but chose not to. They chose to protect the reputations of two vicious gangland criminals due to their informant status rather than the lives of four innocent men. Two of those men died in prison; Joseph Salvati and Peter Limone were both later exonerated and released.
