Virtue that goes public turns into the worst sort of evil.

My husband, as Right as you can get, saw this shared all over his facebook yesterday.

Also, with less pulchritude, Bobby's self-video on the main street of Stockton went by. The mainstream will only diminish him, so I love to see him use social media to bypass the gatekeeping.

He's right that lifestyle is far superior to medical intervention for improving overall public health and people would be happier for it, but good luck getting us to do it.

I don't want to know how many pushups he can do.

I'm not voting for Mr. Universe.

I want to know his specific legislative platform on illegal immigration, reforming the DOJ and CIA, returning sanity to military command, relieving the massive psychic, educational, legal, career, sex, and nation-destroying epidemic of identity politics, and also his economic plan.

I finished listening to his interview with Jordan Peterson. He refuses to answer one single policy question. Instead, he just talks about himself as a healer.

Maybe he should get a job at the local gym. This is what Hunter Biden would look like sober.

A lifestyle that includes a commitment to physical fitness is its own reward. But it's not a qualification for President of the United States. Nor is it a guarantee for good governance. Right now I'd be happy with a chubby guy who loves Big Macs and is committed to protecting the basic freedoms in the U.S. constitution even more than his waistline.

Are you kidding me? Just what we need, another Michelle Obama health scold but with an extra layer of zealous, tinfoil-hatted Savior complex dolloped on top.

Ooh, look! A bare-chested Kennedy! Somebody put grandma's scratchy old soundtrack of Camelot beck on the turntable! It should be interesting to see if the ladies who've been bitching about "toxic masculinity" for all these years will go swooning after this nonsense.

And here I was thinking nothing could be more cringeworthy than the idea of a Musk vs. Zuckerberg cage match.

Well, of course. Character and self-discipline have always been the hallmark of the Kennedys.

Just browsed his Wiki entry. He's quite the character. I'll ignore the rap sheet and remark simply that on scientific matters he seems to be all over the place. His attack on thimerosal was IMHO ill-conceived (people had stopped using it, and studies found it had little/no correlation with autism). As for his attack on nuclear power (esp. Indian Point), it means that --notwithstanding his lip service-- he's not serious about Green Energy. And his NIMBY-flavored fight against offshore windmills near the family seaside homes and his eco-litigation business operating through the worldwide "Keeper" franchising empire he runs, suggest to me that he'll fit right into DC life.

JFK Jr. has said on multiple occasions that "25 percent of Americans are hungry." That's 85 million hungry Americans. Shouldn't his first priority be to feed this colossal number of hungry Americans?

Hunter Hooker: I'm the alt right media, according to some, and Owen is correct: this guy, and Tulsi Gabbard, and several of their ilk, are deceptive leftists lying to conservatives about a few issues they care about.

Just as Trump did, he will screw us if we elect him. Let's stop wasting our time.

I was just coming in here to say that!

It's starting to look like Trump is the only sane choice?

Aggie said...

He looks pretty fit for 69, and of course the point was to highlight this against the other candidates. This kind of thing doesn't impress me because of its artificiality. I do think the level and seriousness of the ongoing debate amongst the candidates is improved with RFKJr in the mix, though. He seems to take on things directly, which allows for questions, rather than being a rote-replier, like Christie, or serial fabulist like Trump, or even worse, an incoherent dementia patient, like you-know-who.

Sebastian said...

Character and self-discipline? And he's trying to get Dem votes? What a loser.

William said...

Some people will vote for him because he looks good with his shirt off. Some people will vote for him because he's a Kennedy. Some people will vote for him because he's not Biden. That's maybe a winning coalition--at least in some of the Democratic primaries...I don't think anyone is going to vote for him because of his ideas though....He claimed that this was his last set of push ups and that's why he tired. I believe him. I don't think this is push-upgate He's got an impressive physique, especially for a guy his age. When it comes to physiques he's got both Biden and Trump beat. I'd be more comfortable, however, with someone who was a little less ripped. In all things moderation--especially pecs and lats. Arnold excepted, I prefer politicians whose natural habitat is not the gym.

If I’m going by the substance that matters, then I’m with Beth B. Our government is responsible for most of the health problems we face, from the fear of Covid, the weight gain from being forced to lockdown, to the poor food choices promulgated for decades by the marketing of the food pyramid. The last thing we need is a person trying to push more government regulation of our health “for our own good”. An individual’s health needs to be managed at the individual level, not federal or even state.

"Since when is getting a sunburn an example of leading a lifestyle of "health & well-being"?"
1. Vitamin D
2. It's not as unhealthy as you probably think. The real sun burn damage risk is with blistering burns.

Original Mike said...

"He claimed that this was his last set of push ups and that's why he tired."

Ahh. I was puzzled, because his performance didn't match his physique.

Robert Cook said...

"...character and self-discipline."

WTF does that mean? How does he see that translated into concrete policy terms? Another hollow candidate speaking in glittering generalities and zilch substance.

Whiskeybum said...

"Since when is getting a sunburn an example of leading a lifestyle of "health & well-being"?"
1. Vitamin D

You can get all the vitamin D your body needs with a lot less sun exposure than it takes to get that pre-cancerous glow that Bobby Jr. is sporting there.

"An individual’s health needs to be managed at the individual level...."

That's pretty much how it is "managed" (sic), and look at the shit shape so many Americans are in. Not that I have any idea what you think is wrong with the food pyramid, but do you really think anyone anywhere (in noticeable numbers) is actually "managing" their diet by following the food pyramid? Americans at large eat what is salty, sugary, savory, fatty, affordable, and quick to buy or prepare.

Robert Cook said...

"It's starting to look like Trump is the only sane choice?"

Only to someone who is insane.

Admirable. Lot's of bench press. Probably natural development, it's doable, but it takes a lot of time and work and shorter guys have a built in advantage. I'm guessing the legs don't get too much work or else he lives in his gym.

But the total lack of subcutaneous fat around the midsection is unnatural at his age. He should show more definition up top if his body fat is low enough to produce that look around the abdomen. Probably liposuction. Nothing wrong with that at all except that it butts up against the "no pills, no syringes" claim.

1. Why would he run a video of his last, worst set?
2. When I was in the Army during the last millennium, I had to do push-ups, sit-ups, and a 2 mile run every six months to remain in good graces. The form that RFK demonstrated would get credit for 0 push-ups- to get credit, I had to straighten elbows completely before beginning the next push-up. I'm into my 8th decade and can do 20 good-form push-ups; I'm sure that RFK can beat that by a large margin, but why show this set?
I'm reminded of Putin, bare-chested on a horse. Not a good look.
A bad idea, poorly implemented.

Original Mike said...

"Not that I have any idea what you think is wrong with the food pyramid, "

What's wrong with the food pyramid is the way too large a portion if carbohydrates. Following those recommendations will make you fat and give you diabetes.

Even assuming it was his last set, nine poorly executed push-ups is just pathetic.

I would love for Kennedy to challenge Joe Biden to a pushup contest, followed by calling him a dog faced pony soldier when he refused. The NYT might be forced to explain to its cloistered readers the background.

Having watched the video now, I think this is sly humor from Althouse. The "pushups" are ridiculous, even as a last set. Pecs look great but abs oddly undeveloped. For most people, better pecs is not where it's at healthwise in any case. But of course, I would love to see a Grandpa vs RFK contest.

You don't need to take steroids to look like that, even at age 69, but you do have to strictly control your diet and weight train rigorously. In other words, takes someone who is disciplined about their health.

His bench work didn't seem that impressive to me either, though I acknowledge that I missed some context.

I could do ten real pushups easier than what I saw him do*, and I have a couple of stone of gut and only exercise Tuesdays and Thursdays on Mayan leap years.

*I know because I did, on impulse, the other morning.
