wildswan said...: I'm following the Bud Light disaster with great interest. It is the greatest marketing disaster I've seen in my lifetime. You have a product that's #1 and you crash it with a marketing plan which essentially consists in getting rid of your customer base and which is successful. Moreover, you cause sales to fall so far that your huge world-wide corporation moves into negative territory in sales. Having been in retail I know that every company has a plan which consists of selling more each year. So, even if -2% doesn't seem like much, to go negative company-wide as a direct result of a sales campaign is just an unimaginable catastrophe. Everyone has lost bonuses, career ladders have broken, and executives are slinking about wondering how many are going to lose their jobs. It'll take awhile for university-trained marketeers to understand why marketing isn't about getting rid of your customer base but I think a good start has been made. Disney was the first to attack their base (get rid of family-friendly) but Bud Lite (get rid of man-friendly) has surpassed Disney.
