Paid a first visit to the Crosstown Concourse this afternoon for a concert. The center of the complex is the repurposed Sears Distribution Center, one of three IIRC enormous sorting and shipping facilities Sears and Roebuck opened in the 1920s.
After decades of planning and money-raising, followed by years of renovation and new construction, it's a true urban mixed-use site, with retail, food, bars, fitness, studios, performance spaces and more on the lower levels and nice apartments in the main block.
If you had to live in old midtown Memphis, especially without a car, there are worse places.
Oh, the Julliard String Quartet, preforming the Beethoven op 135, Ravel, and Dvorak op 105. The theater is one of the new builds, and very fine, as was the music.
The U's new music building has also finally opened. I hope to attend a concert there Wednesday.
UK Gov data: "The people who are under the age of 50 who took the vaccine now have a 49% higher mortality rate."
Big, if true.
When Trump was president, it was easier to dismiss gloom and doom because it was the press insistently pushing it. Now that the press is dismissing gloom and doom under Biden, the question for me is - what if the press is wrong again?
From r/JordanPeterson: Being a trans woman is the ultimate in male privilege.
"Under the progressive rubric a man can self-identify as a woman. These days he doesn't need hormones, psychotherapy, clothes, a wig, surgery, or lipstick. If he wants to go into the woman's change room and enjoy himself, it's completely legal and state sanctioned because he is a woman."
Headline from 1hr ago: "Another object shot down over Lake Huron in Michigan"
"The U.S. military shot down an unidentified flying object over Michigan Sunday – the third in three days and fourth since downing a Chinese spy balloon off the coast of South Carolina Feb. 4."

"148th Fighter Wing "Bulldogs" F-16C/Ds launched out of Madison, Wisconsin at around 10:30AM under the AESIR callsign on an alert scramble which turned into a live intercept. "
On Wisconsin! Madison Bulldogs AM-9 sidewinder bites the Chinese Weenie!!! I am not sure why a heat seeking missile targets a balloon instead of using an AM 120 radar guided one, but what do I know!
The Roger Goodell and the NFL has heard your complaints about leftwing political bias, Anti-American race baiting, and wokeness. And their response is: F-you. Here's the black national anthem. what do you say, Cuckservatives?
Good game in Phoenix but the special super-expensive commercials were awful. Of the ones that I bothered to watch, I really only liked the "Wrong Shelter" Busch Light spot.
Halftime of the Super Bowl is the biggest stage in the world. That was one sad display. What message does America want to send? That we are extreme crotch-rubbing nitwits? What a sorry waste.
I am not sure why a heat seeking missile targets a balloon…
Lots of us are wondering the same thing, especially since the Sidewinder supposedly looks for, specifically, the heat signature of a jet exhaust. There was a claim that early Sidewinders could be defeated by flying towards the sun and getting the missile to replace its lock on you with a lock onto the much warmer heat source. Seems plausible.
AIM-20? What’s wrong with making a firing pass and downing it with a dozen or so 20 mm cannon shells?
madAsHell said...Apparently, menopausal women are an important Super Bowl demographic.
The core problem with sports is that, about 20 years ago, the leagues decided to court non-sports fans. Actual fans, who hate what they’re doing, are like black voters who guarantee their votes to Democrats: since team owners know these fans will keep coming back no matter what, their priorities can safely be ignored.
Of course we aren't being invaded by aliens... I wonder where they stand on abortion?
Pro-Choice because they can save time through religious (i.e. moral, ethical, legal) sanction and delegation. Pro-Slavery because they can save effort through shared/shifted responsibility. Pro-Environmentalism because climate cooling... warming... change... humans, from fetal-baby to granny, are bags of excess carbon filled with mostly water, which are a majority pollutant and primary Greenhouse gas, respectively. Pro-DIEversity because humans shaved, defrocked, disarmed, are little more than gender-ambiguous, colorful blocs, interchangeable, exchangeable, disposable.
I don't like when my government lies to me, in general, but if they lied about how this stuff was shot down. I won't lose a wink of sleep over that. It certainly wasn't a "heat seeking missile."

One possible reason could be that if it is a balloon, the rounds would pass through and eventually fall to earth. I wouldn't want to get hit by a 20mm round that fell from 60,000 feet

Those girls looked like they were wearing hazmat suits while they were twerking.....
Of course we aren't being invaded by aliens, but if we were, that would be interesting.

Terrible Super Bowl commercials.

Instead of lecturing me that my ideas for stories are "inappropriate subjects for fiction," I wish ChatGPT would just say "I can't do that, Dave."
Mahomes, the new Joe Namath.

BTW... Burt Bacharach co-wrote Arthur's Theme (Best That You Can Do).
It was in Billboards year's end top 100 for 2 years, 1981 and 1982.
Discovered it making the playlist.

Wonder if the balloon wasn't in fact shot down by a laser weapon from something other than an F16. Good opportunity to try out secret tech.

Congratulations once again to everyone in the great state of Kansas for another Super championship.
Fascinating. The NYTimes can't bring itself to acknowledge the name of the KC team that just won the Super Bowl is the Chiefs.
