"In a bid to prevent a surge of migrants at the southern border when a pandemic measure is lifted in May, the Biden administration on Tuesday announced its toughest policy yet..."

"... to crack down on unlawful entries. The proposed rule... would presume that migrants are ineligible for asylum if they entered the country unlawfully, a significant rollback in the country’s traditional policy toward those fleeing persecution in other countries. It would allow rapid deportation of anyone who had failed to request protection from another country while en route to the United States or who did not notify border authorities through a mobile app of their plans to seek asylum. Administration officials said the policy would take effect on May 11 with the expected termination that day of Title 42.... Many migrants do not apply for asylum in Mexico, preferring to try their luck in the United States. The new policy was expected to erect a formidable barrier to those hoping to submit U.S. applications."

The NYT reports.

It's amazing that Trump managed to wake up liberals to the problems of illegal immigration.

I was shocked when MSNBC(!) did a whole segment about illegal immigration and how many people were crossing the border.

Kudos to DeSantis and the other Republicans who got the idea of putting immigrants on planes and flying them to "sanctuary cities." Embarrassed the shit out of liberals.

Anti-Trump knee-jerk blind opposition continues to unwind. Was this precipitated by Eric Adams bussing a few migrants to Canada, where they were rejected by a second 'sanctuary'?

At this rate I expect the left to enshrine Trump as a saint within 5-10 years.

Also, "would allow rapid deportation," is not exactly "require rapid deportation." Who thinks this administration would actually deport these illegals (unless they came in wearing MAGA hats)?

So if they use the app before crossing the border to notify the US authorities of their intention to apply for asylum, then none of this applies. Basically Biden is trying to take all of Trump's issues away from him but opposition to the war.

My assumption is that Mr Five Deferments is simply lying though, but he may have had a true awakening when his neocon friends discovered that modern warfare requires an honest to goodness industrial base, that you can't order your weapons on Ali Baba, and wait for them to show up by the container load at the Port of Los Angeles.

He may also have noticed the recruiting crisis that our military is experiencing, given that nobody wants to fight for a country that its own president doesn't consider legitimate, or care about protecting its borders.

Or the simple fact that as of right now, Trump would beat him in an election. I have always assumed that they will simply steal the next election, same as the last one, maybe Joe has lost faith in the "largest voter fraud machine in history," his people put together.

Or maybe it's that his now departed chief of staff and actual POTUS, Ron Klain, didn't manage to engineer a replacement with the same exact views.

We don't need the Wall of china on our southern border. We need some walls - and we need strict laws and clear support of our Immigration Officers.

But the very fact that they have to put out this kind propaganda, at least genuflecting to the obvious notion that asylum seekers in safe third countries are abusing the system, is a tiny bit of progress. In practice, of course, the app is a red carpet.

Again, the MSM constantly lies about Border Security, the flooding of the USA with illegal immigrants, and Biden complete refusal to enforce the immigration laws.

The problem is the DC Republicans, Mitch, Miss Lindsey Graham, Mittens, etc. all support Biden either explicitly or behind closed doors. Trump tried to introduce some sanity, but was stymied by Ryan and McConnell.

Of course, the root problem, is the selfish nature of the american voter. If something doesn't hurt them PERSONALLY, RIGHT NOW, they don't care. They'd rather jabber about Guns or Abotion, completely oblivious to the fact that if enough migrant Democrat voters come over the border, your conseervative views on these issues won't be worth shit. The Elite are electing a new people. And they aren't stopping.

Those people were not "illegal immigrants," but legal asylum seekers. I see Althouse noticed to highlight that "or". That is the only word in the entire article that matters about that "new" policy. All the migrant needs to do to get into the US is to show up at the border station having simply stated on-line that they are applying for asylum, and they will be escorted in and then released internally.

And, let's not kid ourselves- even the ones who don't follow those simple rules won't be deported if captured later. This entire policy change is a fraud.

I used to think this way, and then I did some research. It turns out that cell phone usage among the "poor" is actually pretty universal. When you trade in your old phone for a new one, that old phone ends up somewhere in the third world with a new owner. Even in India and South Africa, everyone owns a cellphone.

Nope, off by a factor of three and a half or so. Blacks are roughly 12% of a population of 330 million or thereabouts. So, closer to 40 million than 12 million.

Perhaps you were conflating this 6 million estimate with someone else's 20 million; if the latter were true, you'd be close. But that figure is almost certainly far too high, not only for Biden's two years, but likely for everything since the 1987 "amnesty."

Which is, actually, the currently existing law and covered by treaties if they unlawfully cross a land border, as in from Mexico or Canada into the USA. They are required- by international treaties - to request asylum in the first country they reach.

Cuban refugees, and other island nations, crossing over open ocean are a whole other matter. There is no way for them to enter legally, hence that can apply for asylum. For Cuban refugees, political asylum is pretty bascially a given. Other island refugees not so much. And other island nations are- closer to other island nations. Which don't want anyone from the nations that they are fleeing. Hmm.. probably has nothing to do with racism and discrimination- that only applies to people of the caucasian persuasion in the USA. No one else anywhere in the world does that, right?
