February 23, 2023

"But as he visited the small Ohio town of East Palestine on Wednesday, former President Donald J. Trump sought to hammer home a message just by showing up..."

"... that his successor and the man he’s seeking to replace, President Biden, had been ineffective in responding to a domestic crisis after a train derailed and spewed toxic chemicals early this month. Mr. Trump had arrived on the ground before either Mr. Biden or the transportation secretary to a train derailment many Republicans have turned into a referendum on a lack of federal concern with the needs of red-state America.... [Trump] suggested the administration had shown 'indifference and betrayal' and he talked about how truckloads of his name-brand water would be distributed to residents.... Shortly before Mr. Trump’s visit, federal officials announced that the transportation secretary, Pete Buttigieg, planned to visit East Palestine on Thursday.... He previously said he did not want his visit to be a distraction and would wait until the federal response in East Palestine moved past the emergency phase."

The NYT reports.

Buttigieg had said "he did not want his visit to be a distraction"? That didn't work when George W. Bush said it about Katrina (and it was more believable that he would indeed have been a distraction).

Anyway, Trump brings his brand-name water. Well... why not? I remember when Trump first came out with that water and it was used in a challenged on his show "The Apprentice." I'm trying to find my old post on that episode. I can remember saying his image on the label was very unappealing because off his conspicuous hair and the instinctive human loathing of hair in one's drinking water.

ADDED: I found the old post, from February 17, 2004:
Hair on water, indivisibility, and Amy as the winner. Prof. Yin has a nice post on last night's The Apprentice. He doesn't like the idea of drinking from a bottle that has Trump-hair on it. Yeah, come to think about it, hair and drinking water are a horrible combination. And a picture of Trump is inherently (in-hair-ently) a picture that draws attention to hair. And hair in its most loathsome form, I might add.

If not for the large black SUVs pulling up and the CNN cameras waiting to show Petey Buttigieg, he would never have been noticed anymore than a lump of **** floating down the Leslie Run would have been.

I suppose the Mayor of East Palestine has to be there to meet with him. And because of Petey's party, probably the Guv of Pennsylvania will show up. But what do any of them represent? The failure to help? The lack of concern for their own citizenry in light of the billions spent abroad?

Hell, an illegal immigrant walking over the border gets more money, healthcare, clothing, and shelter than these people have gotten.

I'm wondering if we are getting the whole story here about what he brought. I don't trust the media.

It showed a mostly empty container and said he brought 13 pallets of bottled water. That's about 25m bottles or about 5 per person in Palestine. Sounds rather paltry.

Was that the intent of the reporting? To show pedjt as a cheap publicity hound? He never has been in the past.

I suspect that there are additional tricks somewhere the media is not telling us about.

Even if it is 25m total, good on him. He is the man in the arena actually doing something.

Brandon has done nothing. Buttegig showed up today unannounced at 7am, refused to even respond to reporter's questions. 20 days after.

Sad.

I just remembered something from Herbert hoover's (excellent) memoirs. There was a monster flood of the Mississippi River in 1924. The river was 20-30 miles wide in places. I am sure it was due to global warming!

Sec commerce hoover spent 2-3 months living on a train going up and down the river helping out in the disaster.

Of course, that was par for hoover's course. Private citizen saved millions of Belgians from starvation during ww1.

Trump is cashing in on somebody else's political power play.

The power play is turning derailments into a "public problem," where it had previously been a railroad problem.

Sociologist Joseph Gusfield studied it. The road to political power was to identify a new "public problem and take ownership of it." The problem would previously have been, say, a personal moral failing, the original instance being drunk driving until the late 50s. Drunks didn't actually kill many because drunks tend to drive extremely slowly. Almost everybody gets home after the party. But Mothers against Drunk Driving came along ("If it weren't for the drunks, most of them wouldn't be mothers" - F.T.Grampp) and took it on as a public problem.

The people of the town are owed a lot from the railroad, just as a legal matter, to make them whole. Where's the public problem?

And the railroad was there first. They built the town around it, so it's not like the railroad is a moral interloper.

Not only does the Democrat administration ignore major concerns in red areas, they ignore them in blue areas as well (see rising murder rates in our cities).

Mayor Pete has proven himself worthless when it comes to results. But liberals don't concern themselves with results. He's gay. Adopted a baby with his husband. Pretends to ride a bike around DC with a gay helmet. He checks many of the required liberal boxes.

His ability to perform under pressure doesn't matter. Environmental disasters don't matter to liberals either. Especially ones you can actually see. They like the ghost trickery. Things they can't see...and can form into anything they want. Like Carbon and Global Warming.

It's all bullshit.

An image of Trump's hair on a bottle of water seems to be a bit of a stretch. 20+ years ago I started commenting on the absurdity of bottled water labeled "Deer Park" but it still sells to this day. Water from a deer park is not water I find appealing. Perhaps it is the old story of the hikers drinking the cold natural mountain stream water only to find a dead deer upstream around the bend when they resume their walk.

I saw the network news (David Muir) last night. There was a brief snippet showing Trump's appearance and, then, a longer segment where the reporter explained how the Republicans and Trump might have caused this derailment by softening safety regulations. I also read the NYT piece. Congratulations to them for noting the response from a Trump spokesman that this accident was probably caused by an axle problem and not by the brakes. (The brake regulations were what were softened.)....Here's what I know: Norfolk Southern has accidents a great deal more often than other railroads. Buttigieg's response to the accident was slow and lame. The Biden administration made no attempt to alter Trump's weakened regulations. The news media is biased. It's probably not wise to drink coffee at the local McDonald's unless it's made with Trump Clean Water.

One of the traits I look for an in an executive is the ability to quickly define and deal with problems, including having the wrong people in the wrong positions.

In politics, that's a problem. You can't be seen HURTING your own people. It creates these ludricrous outcomes where you give people a chance to lead and they fail and get shuffled around to similar positions.

Look at Rahm Emmanuel. He was involved in hiding a police murder, got the video surpressed until after his re-election, then leaves office. He's considered for a cabinet position with biden, TranSec, then being an ambassador to China or Japan.

Note the interchangeability modus operandi. At a time of extreme global pressure with China, our Ambassador is considered interchangeable. At a time of global infrastructure failings, our Cabinet Secretary is considered interchangeable. Not "Here's our top pick for the job" but what job can we give to reward a party loyalist.

This is why our parties are in downfall. They are dissolute failures at governing.

That is why Desantis would be wise to not even try to run against Trump and hope to be Trump's Vp. Until Desantis figures out how this works he will be a 65 million vote general candidate at best.

Democrats never do anything wrong. The Republicans just claim they do, while they "Pounce".
However, Trump and R's do screw up, and do things wrong. And the MSM takes them to task. Its totally non-partisan.

So if FEMA denied for weeks that E.Palstine was a disaster area needing assistance. IF Biden would rather give money to Kiev than Ohio. If Biden would rather visit Kiev and then give hope to Americans suffering from a Chemical Spill. IF the Transportation Secretary would rather tell Construction workers they are "Too white" than visit E. Palastine, then that's just "Republicans Pouncing".

You'll notice the only Republican showing up and seeming to care is TRump. Gov Dewine wouldn't even pressure FEMA for disaster aid, until a bunch of Nazis showed up at a E. Palstine Townhall and made a stink. Vance just jetted in for a quick photo-op. Nobody else from the DC Republcians seem to give a damn.

Maybe, the RR company bribed the Republicans AS USUAL. Or maybe its they don't care about the middle/working class.

It shows you, take Trump out of the GOP, and is the same old Rich man's club full of globalists shedding tears over "FREEDOM" 4000 or 6000 miles away, while they say "Fuck you" to average Americans. Will continue as long as Americans put up with it.

Though why the residents of East Palestine should have to clean their houses and not the corporate officers of Norfolk Southern is beyond me.

It is also becoming very clear why many of Pete Buttigieg's constituents in South Bend -- the black community in particular -- loathed and despised the man. Like far too many Democrats of his generation (and younger) he is contemptuous of people who work for a living.

An interesting aspect of this from the GOP primary aspect, DeSantis hands were a bit tied in helping out. Maybe Florida could have provided some aid, but in so doing, it would make DeWine look weaker. It would also call into question lack of aid from Ohio neighboring GOP governors. Trump is showing brilliant leadership skills here and making his opponents on both sides look weak. As it was in 2016, the opening was made for Trump due to the vacuum created by the lack of leadership in both DC based parties.

Has anyone at NYT or other media talked about the actual chemistry of this mess? I hear that some of it is “vinyl chloride” which is toxic and I hear that the way to control it is to do a “controlled burn” — but I also read that burning vinyl chloride produces dioxin, which is maybe even more toxic. Has EPA or FEMA briefed us all on the hazmat, the dangers, the exposures (actual vs permitted), the time/space affected by the stuff, the plan for keeping people safe, the plan for remediation, the likely cost?

Are reporters asking? If not why not?

Owen, I did a search related to your thoughts. The first hit was USA Today with a fact check, basically debunking all the concerns. Except, it debunks it like most bias organizations do, by pointing out the truth of the statements made then making a strawman of the arguments made based on those truths and then claiming the strawman is false.

For example, myth 1: "Environmental experts said that there is no "massive death plume" raining hydrochloric acid on Ohio residents following the Feb. 3 trail derailment. " The myth begins by describing that vinyl chloride when exposed to common air breaks down into hydrochloric acid and phosgene gas, which is the concerns I've heard. But then the article notes the Ohio EPA says there was no acid rain. A couple of things "no acid rain" is not the same as on "massive death plume", and while I think "massive death plume" is hyperbolic, the concerns of many in the area is the death to livestock and wildlife that has occurred related to this incident, yet the Ohio and Federal EPA suggests nothing about the controlled burn is related to those deaths. And after noting the chemicals created by vinyl chloride volatility in air, there is no more discussion as to harm they could cause.

When you read the sources, none of the factcheck involved actually going to the area and talking to people affected. All of it involved government sources and other news media.

rcocean said...

If Trump "softened the regulations" - why didn't Biden harden them?

He's had two years. And has never said boo about these "Soft Regulations" before.

And Biden is the one who gave the two huge RR companies everything they wanted and ordered the RR workers back on the job, despite their protests that the RR companies sick leave policy and refusal to hire more workers was hurting RailRoad safety.

But what do facts matter to the Democrat voters? Nothing. They care nothin' for nobody except themselves. They either vote their ethnic/sexual group identity or just want a piece of the Graft. Biden could literally start a nuclear war and they'd all vote for him in 2024.

In the past, Republican fascists were happy to gut the EPA since they figured most pollution only impacted black Americans. (Which is A-OK with them). But now that their corporate giveaways ended up poisoning their very own poor white redneck voters, they act all concerned.

Pretty hard to find someone else to blame given a history that pathetic.

But not only will they try, they’ll even claim that malignant narcissist Trump actually “cares” about them! (He doesn’t even care about his own family).

Well, he did care enough to let hundreds of thousands of them die of his botched pandemic response while he stood around next to the real doctors and tried to sound smart by suggesting that they try to “knock (COVID) out… by an injection inside or almost a cleaning” with “disinfectant” or “powerful light inside the body.”

Secretary Pete tweeted:

"We’re constrained by law on some areas of rail regulation (like the braking rule withdrawn by the Trump administration in 2018 because of a law passed by Congress in 2015), but we are using the powers we do have to keep people safe."

Trump was not in office when that law was passed in 2015. One wonders why it took three years to implement it, and why one might blame Trump for doing his job...

Article II, Section 3:

"... he shall take Care that the Laws be faithfully executed..."

OK Chuck, I'll take your bet. For $5.

Since you made the claim and since even our president emeritus is innocent until proven guilty, it's up to you.

Prove he paid for it with campaign funds.
...

I didn't propose a bet.
Anyway; April 15, 2023 will be the Trump '24 Campaign's next quarterly filing date. Then we'll find out.

Care to provide some actual proof that the train derailment was Trump's fault?

No. Thanx for asking.

You have to watch this Fox News Channel video twice.

https://twitter.com/justinbaragona/status/1625953747431002123

The first time, just listen to Governor DeWine's calm explanation. It's really easy to understand. Then, the second time you watch, just look at Martha MacAllum on the left side of the screen. Watch her expression as she gets all the wrong answers that neither she nor her Fox producers ever wanted on the air.

Martha is clearly thinking, "Oh shit I am going to get the Jacqui Heinrich-Kristen Fisher treatment."

hpudding: "Pretty hilarious that the right-wing fascist Republicans are dumb enough to give former president combover Blondie a pass on gutting the EPA and letting the train companies keep using the ineffective brakes (with Civil War-era “technology”) that caused this disaster."

A few years back the typical time from democratical/LLR (but I repeat myself) lie to full debunking could be years. Over the last several years that time gap shrunk to just months and then weeks.

And now we have the LLR's and hpuddings of the world simply saying screw it and tossing in things that were proven lies weeks ago.

I don't care what Mayor Pete does or doesn't do for the rest of his life: that vile posed photo of him and his male spouse reclining in a hospital bed dressed in hospital gowns as if they had just delivered a baby who came out of a woman's body is so grotesquely denialist to womanhood that I can't believe he has concern for living things beyond himself. Only a sociopath of pretty major proportions could choose to pose that way.

Also, how much maternity leave did Sarah Palin take when she actually carried a child and gave birth? To a special needs baby?

Also, does Mayor Pete's spouse even have a job? Why did Pete need months of maternity leave?

He must have something big on Biden to not be fired for his complete lack of ... real labor. At the office.

Tina - indeed.
How does Mayor Pete have a job? He's a diversity hire. As we all can see - He doesn't have any qualifications. He's no different than most pols. A loyal figurehead for the corrupt money grubbers and lazy sex starved FBI types - who kill people to hide secrets.
