Sunrise over Lake Superior.

This morning at 7:34, 7:37, and 7:45 — Eastern Time. We were in Marquette, Michigan:

Here's what the surface we were walking on looked like — very striated from long-ago glaciers:

We hiked in the dark to get to this location, in Presque Isle Park.

"long-ago glaciers"

In a very real sense, that feels like just yesterday to me. I have spent the last three years (with many more to come, I hope) crawling and slogging all over the UP in search of rocks that tell the story of how this area was built. Today, I am processing samples we collected last week from the Michigamme Formation, the sedimentary remains of when the area was an ocean (the Animikie Basin), with the beach not too far away to the northwest. The Michigamme Formation was deposited about 1.9 billion years ago. Last week I found an Archean gneiss I've been searching for for two years; 3.5 billion years old; the oldest rock in the U.S. to my knowledge.

10,000 years ago really was just yesterday.

Many years ago we were at Marquette. Mom wanted me and my brother to get some rocks to take home for the landscaping. We did, putting them in the back seat footwells of the station wagon. A woman stopped me and Matt, saying if everyone took rocks soon there wouldn't be any rocks. We continued because even at our age we realized it was daft. It is all rocks all the way across the lake and through Canada.

This was about 1981.

Also, try to visit the A.E. Seaman Mineral Museum on Tech's campus if you haven't already done so. The Copper Country geology and mining history is amazing.

My wife suffered a profound blow-out on the interstate, and managed to limp into a nearby Les Schwab. Passenger car blowouts are usually the result of low tire inflation.

The conversation.....

"Honey, doesn't that car have a low tire pressure warning?"

"Yes, it does, and it was on after the tire blew out!! I don't think it was on before then!?!??!"

Third Coast: We spent an afternoon at Seaman and then returned and spent the next morning. My Fucking God! It was stunning. I felt shell-shocked walking out of the place. And humbled.

Thanks for the link. Looking forward to watching it.

Jupiter: The temperature outside of protected coves is literally breathtaking in high summer. I have never sailed but have been on a boat tour of Pictured Rocks and the Soo Locks back again in 1981. Back in 2000 I got my final USCG Auxiliary boat crew sign off done on the St. Mary's River. The clarity of the water is stunning. Lake Superior is beautiful, cold, with rugged coasts and it's own weather patterns. A place to respect and not take chances with.

Hello, I'm just a dumbshit.

Cool stuff, Original Mike. Sounds like you have a Scotsman's nose for rocks.

10,000 years ago really was just yesterday.

The crusty geology professors in the late 70's used to call the Holocene "Recent".

What does Althouse think about "the political dimension" of the Appeals court staying Cannon? Is their decision "about the rule of law"?

Delightful above and below.

Last night Tucker interviewed an expert about the Chinese Lanternfly infestations in the NE and spreading. Apparently the critters hitchhiked in rocks imported from China.

Which raised the obvious but still unanswered question: why did Pennsylvania need to import rocks from China?

Rare earth minerals, OK, but rocks?

I donated platelets again today, #17 of the year. 3 donors today were wearing masks. I withheld judgement on them because they were doing something good that most have never done. But you have to be healthy to donate, and I cannot help but wonder what their thought processes must be like.

BTW, there is extra screening if you've been vaxxed. I don't what it is- I haven't been vaxxed. They like unvaxxed blood like mine.

Trump and Judge Cannon are wrong about everything that went up to the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals. Everything. The resulting elegant opinion expeditiously, politely, and succinctly dismantles every single justification Judge Cannon offered for denying the requested stay. Every, Last. One.

Two of the three Appeals Judges were Trump appointees.

But I finally detected Trump's renowned sense of humor on Hannity tonight:

"If you're the president of the United States, you can declassify just by saying, 'it's declassified' — even by thinking about it," Trump claimed [with a contrived serious look on his fat face].

He forgot to add "Poof!" LOL

Striated from long ago glaciers, eh? So something warmed the earth enough to melt friggin glaciers, you’re telling me, huh? Long ago like ten thousand years ago? So back then they were emitting carbon like mad, right? Like by farting and breathing or how?

Global warming is the most destructive fake science ever perpetuated on humankind. Sadly my typing that puts me on a watchlist. That’s how far from science we’ve come. The New Dark Ages were ushered in by “scientists.” Like Dr. Fauci. Whoda thunk it?

Small town WI about 30 minutes from Madison. Whole summer had massive, persistent increase in beach attendees speaking solely Spanish and rocking tunes on boombox for all to hear.
I'm sure it has nothing to do with open borders.
Imagine Joementia's response to questions about rape trees at border.
What would that pedo walking corpse say?

We never saw any firsthand, but there are certain rocks that fluoresce under UV, called Yooperlites.

"Strolling onto the shoreline at 4 am one fateful morning back in June of 2017, using his new UV light, Erik would make his initial discovery after finding two small Yooperlites, each “about the size of a dime”. When shone on with a UV light, to his surprise, these small stones emitted what is now a distinguishable teal-yellowish luminescent glow. The discovery would garnish a staggering amount of national media attention and has since inspired Erik to pursue a mentorship role within his community. Offering yearly Yooperlite tours & expeditions, Erik will accompany and educate rockhounds & rock collecting enthusiasts on a long walk along the Lake Superior shoreline in search of these incredibly unique rocks. You can also purchase Yooperlites directly from the official Yooperlite online store, however, there is a considerable effort to encourage discovering these sodalite-rich syenite rocks for yourself. The best spots to search for Yooperlites appear to be along the Keweenaw Peninsula and further east over by Whitefish Point, but with a chance to unearth Yooperlites on any night of the year, there’ll be plenty of opportunities to plan out this unique adventure. We’d recommend checking out the official Yooperlite & Pure Michigan websites for some of the best tips on how to best seek out Yooperlites for yourself."

We stayed in Ironwood, visiting with the owner of a small motel on the main drag, and came to know that he and his family were from Lebanon, bit had lived in La Crosse until recently. Nice folks. Got caught in a thunderstorm and downpour the first evening, but the next morning the light along the Lakeshore was magical and got some nice photos. Second night, at a restaurant on the main drag - US Highway 2 - we saw a procession of military vehicles going westbound. Easily 100+ cargo carriers, tanker trucks and various types of equipment. We hadn't expected a parade.

I was there this summer during Beaneater Jr.'s visit to the Michigan Tech campus. Just a great museum. The stibnite samples blew us away, but really everything was quite wonderful. We spent hours there trying to make sure that we saw every single rock they had. Definitely worth it (other than being 53 hours from anywhere...).

Check out Ann Linnea's

An exciting adventure, yes, but I couldn't forgive her for leaving two young children at home with hubby while she had such a dangerous trip. (I likewise don't think much of fathers who climb Everest.) YMMV

So European vegetable farmers are abandoning their crops in the fields due to electricity prices, reportedly. All over a border dispute between Nazis and Russians.

Why do we even care? Will anybody’s life in the US get worse if Ukraine was non aligned? Why are we fighting the restoration of the buffer state with Russia that existed until the coup, and why were we taking sides in the civil war that resulted from the coup and that has lasted eight years?

Oh, that’s right, it was our coup and our civil war.

As I mentioned before you can find raw copper in some of the stream beds in the UP. The visitors center in Watersmeet. ( US Rt 2 and 45) has a giant raw copper slab in the lobby. The black sand on the beaches of Lake Superior holds flour gold. Although not in great quantity. Investigate the famous "Paulding Lights" while you're up there.
The Finns were up there to log, not mine. "Cornishmen" were imported to mine copper. Hence the "pasties" for sale everywhere. Can't stand em.

First pic of clouds in the near-dawn...awesome. Your portfolio is very rich stuff, earned honestly by showing up in time for the shot, taking it, trying again, taking it, day after day. You make it look easy but I'm pretty sure it's not.

"Sprezzatura" seems relevant here. That is one of my favorite words: making difficult things look easy. It makes the achievement all the more admirable --and demoralizes the competition!

M Jordan @ 10:38: "...The New Dark Ages were ushered in by “scientists.” Like Dr. Fauci. Whoda thunk it?"

Agree (vehemently) with your comment. But as to your question --"Whoda thunk it?" how could it be otherwise? Most of the voters and those who seek their votes, are not scientists. The scientists consist of "true" scientists in love with its austere challenge and objectivity (and the thrill of exploring new phenomena in a disciplined way) and the also-rans, the sometime scientists or posers or politicians (see: "Fauci, Anthony"). The "true" scientists don't do politics well, but the others do. And as they do it more, they do it better. Pretty soon you have an elite class lording it over the gee-whiz electorate: "Trust me, I have 17 doctorates and a fancy job title!".

That's on one side of the equation: those who seek power. On the other side, those who grant power, by elections or just general deference (a more subtle but more corrosive effect than elections)? On average they grow dumber and therefore more trusting. As we have dumbed-down our curricula and failed to press the (inherently painful) lessons of scientific thinking onto the brains of the next generation (and the next), we have emasculated them intellectually. Who are they to challenge the authorities? The answer comes from the black box or the press conference!

We ourselves have established the conditions for the New Dark Ages. It doesn't hurt that our technologies, especially in computing/communications, are now pretty much indistinguishable from magic.

So the political prizes are now awarded to the best magicians. And the "best" magicians are those who flatter the electorate and dazzle them with quick, cheap displays.

Not optimistic here.

Very much agree with M. Jordan and Owen.

A century ago Julian Benda wrote "The Treason of the Clerks" (or "Intellectuals") excoriating the thought leaders and influencers of his time for their devotion to national and ethnic causes over Western Civ's finest ideas and achievements.

Some of the specifics differ in our situations, but the outline is the same: a focus on winning some national or racial contest drives out all other considerations, and politics becomes winner-take-all, losers to the wall.

"And History will smile to think that this is the species for which Socrates and Jesus Christ died."
