"It was not just my home that was raided… it was the hopes and dreams of every citizen who I've been fighting for since the moment I came down the golden escalator in 2015, wanting to represent the people."

Said Donald Trump, quoted in "Donald Trump: What we learned from his rally in Pennsylvania" (BBC).

Here's the NYT article about the speech: "Trump Lashes Out in First Rally Since F.B.I. Search/Donald J. Trump and President Biden have both made recent appearances in Pennsylvania, one of the key states in November’s midterm elections."

In an aggrieved and combative speech in Pennsylvania, Mr. Trump stoked anger against law enforcement even as the F.B.I. and federal officials have faced an increase in threats following the search of Mr. Trump’s residence to retrieve classified documents....

Biden, in his recent Pennsylvania speech, was also  aggrieved and combative. And Biden stoked anger, though not against federal law enforcement. He stoked anger against our fellow Americans.

Although he faced criticism for the tirades, and some Republicans have warned about the political dangers in attacking law enforcement, the former president signaled he would yield no ground.

Remember the summer of 2020, when people of the left criticized law enforcement? I think, in America, we get to criticize law enforcement.

His speech came two days after Mr. Biden warned that democratic values were under assault by forces loyal to Mr. Trump. The former president described Mr. Biden’s address as “the most vicious, hateful, and divisive speech ever delivered by an American president.”

I don't think the NYT wants us to think Trump is right about that, but I think he is. The NYT tones down the description of Biden's speech. And look, it calls Trump supporters "forces loyal to Mr. Trump." Forces? Loyal? Isn't this just politics, and some of our fellow citizens support Trump because they like his policies? No, they're "loyal" to him, and they're like some sort of army.

That language reminds me of Biden's line: "[H]istory tells us that blind loyalty to a single leader and a willingness to engage in political violence is fatal to democracy." Why is one side's love of their candidate "blind loyalty"? And isn't Biden just demanding loyalty to his side? Would he and the NYT condemn the Black Lives Matter demonstrations — where we saw a "willingness to engage in political violence" — "fatal to democracy"?

“You’re all enemies of the state,” Mr. Trump told thousands of supporters at his rally...

Trump was characterizing what Biden said.

“He’s an enemy of the state, you want to know the truth,” he said of Mr. Biden....

Good line, I think. If the President thinks the American people are the enemy, then he is the enemy. I don't like seeing Trump step up and match Biden's military-style politics with his own military style — I'm the enemy?! No, you're the enemy! — but that's Trump. He never stands down. If you want to fight, he will fight.

Because the NYT is fighting on one side of a civil war. The choice of language revealsf their conception of reality. When they tell you what they are doing, believe them.

It is not an accident; they are preparing people for the next stage in which arresting and maybe jailing Trump or some of his prominent supporters will need to be justified. He and all MAGA proponents are "dangers" to "democracy" -- that is the line the speech was promoting. The NYT, like the NYer writer and Dana Milbank, are just parroting that leftist line. That is their function and they are ready and willing to perform it. Paint Trump and his voters as terrorists and then clean them out of there as much as possible.

“forces loyal to Trump”

Trump’s biggest error was fast tracking and promoting the mRNA shots.

I would bet the large majority of the vilified “unvaccinated” were, and are Trump supporters. We didn’t bend over and stick that bullshit poison in our ass just because Trump said it was great. And we didn’t do it when threatened with mandates, loss of jobs and travel freedom, and cultural cancellation by the left.

It’s not about loyalty to Trump. We’re rooting for him. Big difference. It’s about taking on the corrupt, soulless, self-proclaimed “mainstream”.

If the stuff that the FBI was (allegedly) after was so important that, after contemplaing and coonsidering for several weeks, and then running out of options (allegedly) other than raiding the former President's home (in violation of all "norms")--shouldn't Trump have been indicted by now? Shouldn't we all know what was so important?

(And yes, I know that now they are saying that it was because he violated the recordkeeping statutes. Because the nuclear codes and insurrection plans didn't pan out).

And all the pundits were saying "this needs to be something really big, because otherwise the raid would be totally unacceptable." So now we know---it wasn't anything big. This is unacceptable. And the response is "OK, we fired one guy."

And the show moves on. While our (alleged) President uses the suspicion that he and his minions have generated to stoke anger, fear and division.

And quislings like Andy McCarthy say "Lets wait and see, Maybe they had a good reason." Too damn late.

The Left are great at assaulting Trump because he doesn't know how they play their political game. President DeSantis would know, and will play it better than them, as he has in the office of governor.

Temujin said...

I think you hit it on the head when you state that the NYT sees Trump voters as blindly loyal. The entire left sees us as blindly loyal, stupid, and ready to follow him as he walks off a cliff. In their mind it cannot be that we actually loved his policies, his idea of working on our own issues first, in a manner that prioritizes our country's needs- first. Which is what every other nation does, with no apologies. They just don't call it that, but their priority is their country. Trump's priority is our country and, unsurprisingly, millions of Americans want that.

That's not loyalty to a cause. That's rational self-interest.

Here's some examples of blind loyalty:
-Standing in front of a burning down Atlanta, proclaiming to the world on TV that this is a 'peaceful protest'. The New York Times was up to their eyeballs in usage of 'peaceful protests'. As our nation was ripped apart, they stayed loyal to their cause.
-Watching multiple cities burned down, looted, people murdered, and smiling about it, raising money to bail out the perpetrators, engineering more protests, arming the protestors, and refusing to speak to the nation- while you're running for office- to tell the protestors to stop. Just stop.
-BLM and Antifa threaten national rioting if Trump were to get re-elected in 2020. They'll do the same if he runs in 2024. Why? Loyalty to their cause.

And the fact that most of the nation- a large majority of people- think the FBI should be turned inside out, hosed out, shaken out, and left to dry out in a spotlight before operating fully again, and in light of the FBI's behavior and illegalities over the last 6 or so years, the fact that the New York Times cannot see that We the People have some serious questions about the FBI can only be attributed to blind loyalty to a cause.

Again, Party over Nation. Cause over Party. The NYT long ago ceased to be an objective source of information. Take your news from them knowing they have a Cause before they report anything.

wendybar- your link to Benny Johnson's tweet is terrific. We saw this in the weeks leading up to the 2020 election. And again- I'll go to my grave knowing that there were not 81 million individuals who voted for Joe Biden. He couldn't muster 50 people to his rallies in the early fall of 2020.

And this is also why they are so scared of Trump running again and why they must take him out now. He poses a real, clear, and present danger to those holding power. They do not want anything to derail what they have going. It's the greatest golden goose ever. It's easy, free money that just keeps on coming. The exact opposite of Bubba Clinton who claimed to feel your pain, Trump asks you to feel his (fake, contrived, staged) pain.

If this were true, it'd be a con (though no more a con than Clinton's claiming to feel our pain) - Howard's right. But I don't hear Trump saying, "Feel sorry for meeee!" I hear him saying, "If they'll do this to me, rich, influential, former holder of the highest office in the country and therefore presumed to be somewhat insulated by the privileges of that office, they can do it much more easily to you."

And that's been borne out again and again. Yes, Oberlin lost - but they haven't given up, have they? When the question makes it to court, they're still losing - but it isn't the slam-dunk it should have been any more, and people engaged in productive culture, like shopkeepers in San Francisco, are, more and more often, giving up rather than fight a system they have good reason to believe is no longer on their side.

Productive culture is the dividing line, it seems to me: "Trump voters" is shorthand for "people who believe that property rights are the foundation of all other rights, who want to build something, who believe that the proper role of government is to protect citizens' rights rather than to protect anyone's feelings."

Yet if what the FBI was after were the Russiagate documents that it imagined were hidden somewhere at Mar-a-Lago, it’s not clear if the agents found them. According to the Times story, the safe in Trump’s closet “did not contain the materials investigators sought.” Maybe the materials were somewhere else. Perhaps Trump never had them. Trump allies I’ve spoken with don’t think he has the documents.

Garland’s dilemma now is whether to risk finding out the truth. Press reports suggest that he is undecided about indicting Trump.

It has been clear for a long time- years- that the Democrats and the Left worldwide are terrified of Donald Trump. Not just the man, but also what he represents. They've called any and all people from the Right, and particularly those running for office, fascists, Nazis, racists, misogynists, homophobes, etc. for years. That they still use that is not new. But the level of vitriol and active actions- legal and illegal- to stop Trump and anyone on Trump's side of things is new. They don't even care about what is seen any longer. That is new. The curtains have been pulled back and we all see what we have in our DoJ, our State Department, the IRS, the FBI, CIA, NSA, our Congress, the NIH and CDC, and certainly in the White House, media, Big Tech, and education systems. Everyone of these groups have had their time headlining the story over the past few years. Hell, when Obama announced he was not leaving Washington and that in his new Kalorama mansion Valerie Jarrett would still be working, you knew the shenanigans they started were only just beginning.

Never before has one person represented such a direct threat to their power, their systems of ruling, their illegal abuse of the Government to fill their own pockets and those of their 'friends'. Trump was rough on them the first time around. But he had no idea how deep their teams were. He knows now. He's been ceaselessly and shamefully attacked in so many ways in the last 6 years, that it's amazing he's still standing.

But he is. And that threat of him running again grows with each day. If he were to run again, and win? Hoo-boy. As quickly as you can say 'heads on a pike' there would be firings throughout Washington DC. Hearings, committees, and a House Cleaning unlike any before. And they know this.

A couple of things that most of you know: In 2020 Trump won 18 of 19 bellwether counties. Trump won all four bellwether states. Trump received more votes in 2020 than he did when he won in 2016, more votes than any incumbent President in history- including the Beloved One Himself, Barack, and Bill Clinton, and any Republican who came before Trump. More people registered as Republicans and Trump received higher percentages of Black, Hispanic, Jewish, Asian votes than any Republican before him. All of this should have spelled an election night victory. But we're told to believe Joe Biden received 81 million votes.

Barack Obama, in 2008 and 2012 ran against no one and still got 5K-6K fewer votes than did Donald Trump in 2020. Barack did not come close to 81 million votes, but Joe Biden did? As Joe himself would say, C'mon, man!

If Trump were to run again, many many Republicans would speak out against him. All Democrats would rail on against him. But he'd still win. That is the terror and everyone knows it. You can almost taste it in the air now. That performance by Biden last Thursday was a cry and call for everyone to prevent a Boogie Man from coming back into power. I'm here to tell you that, if he does run again, he very well might get more than 74 million votes the next time. The Democrats simply do not have a person who can bring in the votes that he can. There will not be a national mailed out ballot this time. There will be voter ID in many states. And no matter how many ballot harvesters are at work in California, they will not prevent what is coming.

They have to get Trump indicted and they know it.

BLM anti-police rhetoric lead to actual assassinations of police officers.

Meanwhile, anti-FBI rhetoric has lead to calls for their budgets to be cut.

I think this analysis of why the DOJ raided Trump's home is right on the money.

So was the FBI after what they believed to be Trump’s secret stash of Russiagate documents? The warrant was drawn so broadly that it allowed the agents to seize any document from Trump’s term in the White House. But an Aug. 26 New York Times story confirmed that the FBI was “spurred” to act after discovering Trump had retained “documents related to the use of ‘clandestine human sources,’”and other documents related to “foreign intercepts collected under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act.”

Those at all familiar with Russiagate will recognize these keywords, employed by the same media organization that won a 2018 Pulitzer Prize for partnering with U.S. intelligence services to destabilize and delegitimize Trump’s presidency. The descriptions in the article also line up with what Trump reportedly declassified before he left the White House.

That makes sense—it would likely sow chaos across the country and, Garland must worry, perhaps force Trump’s hand. For if the former president does have the documents, in whatever form, and posts them, it might bring the house down on the U.S. national security apparatus and the Democratic administration that it shields.

The effect of the FBI raid on Mar-a-Lago is therefore to obscure the real scandal: U.S. spies committed a series of crimes in their effort to unseat a U.S. president, and then ignored the lawful orders of that president in order to keep their crimes hidden from the American public.

"Ambrosia is a 'salad' you bring to church picnics, featuring stuff like pineapple, marshmallows, and whipped cream!"

The word originally referred to the Food of the Gods, and now means food that is extraordinarily delicious.

Good golly, Robert Cook, so glad you were here to school me!

[Eye roll] I contemplated saying, "Ambrosia, in addition to being the food of the gods, is also a 'salad' that you bring to church picnics" - but discarded the idea for 3 reasons:

1. I'm already too long-winded as a rule;

2. It didn't serve my point, which is that the Golden Escalator, like a "salad" made of marshmallows and whipped cream, is flat-out funny;

3. And finally - everybody already knows that.

But sure! Keep thinking we're all hicks with dirt behind our ears and plastic antimacassars on our La-Z-Boys. (Not that there's anything wrong with that. Live and let live, I do actually always say.)

See, he needs to transfers his problems to you people so you will be willing to Sacrifice everything to defend his honor. The exact opposite of Bubba Clinton who claimed to feel your pain, Trump asks you to feel his (fake, contrived, staged) pain.

No, Howard the troll, he needs us to understand the stakes of this fight.

But that's ok, because we all already figured that out on our own. Because we're not stupid

And when El Presidente Biden says "MAGA Republicans" are the enemy, he's not just attacking Trump.

Even you can't be stupid enough to miss that, so I guess this is more of your "I'm a troll, you can't hold me accountable for what I write here" BS

Yet just 6 years ago, Trump said this:

In my administration, I'm going to enforce all laws concerning the protection of classified information. No one will be above the law."

"One of the first things we must do is to enforce all classification rules and to enforce all laws relating to the handling of classified information," he said in September 2016

Ignorance, stupidity, or just dishonesty?

Because Trump DID "enforce all laws concerning the protection of classified information". Under those laws the President is entitled to declassify anything he wants, for whatever reason he wants.

So he did. Then he took the declassified documents with him.

Which was also perfectly legal under those laws.

So, Mark, what's your proof that Trump didn't look at the boxes and say "I now declassify everything in there"?

Because under the law, that's all he needs to do

President Trump was the first politician to figure out how to actually "tax the rich" lots of pols claim to want to do it. Since taxes on wealth are forbidden by the constitution they know they never can.

All they can tax is income and wealthy folks aren't smart enough to keep that as low as possible. See Musk, bezos, buffet and others.

President Trump limited the amount of state taxes they could deduct from federal income tax. It is indirect and a work around but it does amount to a tax on wealth.

And as soon as the dems got in, they canceled it.

"Joe B|den called me a "clear and present danger to the United States of America."

This is a legal definition that allows the President to murder me.

>>>>>that is an utterly preposterous statement. As you have been told, the phrase appeared in a 1917 court case regarding the First Amendment, a case that was effectively overturned many years later. It had nothing to do with terrorism.

"It is the definition reserved for terrorists like Osama bin Laden that allowed the President to hunt bin Laden and to kill bin Laden."

>>>>> No, it is not. bin Laden was a self-declared enemy of the United States, and made war against us, killing thousands of Americans.

It’s funny. I’m noticing on this blog that there are certain commenters who don’t seem capable of making a single point addressing the original post, or even comments about it. 10:14 would be a good example of that. Just an insult without even identifying a single objection to the quoted content.

Are these comments/commenters adding any kind of value to the threads? Or are these insults for their own sake just a way for people too inarticulate to persuade anyone of whatever their actual objection is, to feel better about that fact?

I think Althouse’s posts, whether I agree with them or not, elaborate much more than mere sniping and I can’t see why anyone spending a lot of time here would lack any inclination to rise above behavior like that. Have some respect for the blog if you can’t for yourself.

I hear him saying, "If they'll do this to me, rich, influential, former holder of the highest office in the country and therefore presumed to be somewhat insulated by the privileges of that office, they can do it much more easily to you."”

We know that is the case - with the J6 tourists being held, in deplorable conditions, for the crime of touristing. Or, even for talking on the phone for talking to one of the J6 tourists, or, alst week, for representing them in court.

The inventory seems to indicate that there was actually 1 box (probably half full) of documents marked secret or classified and 32 boxes of books, clothes, magazines and press clippings so the UHaul didn't look stupid with one box in it. And they spread all the marked documents out on the floor to take a picture.

St Croix,

Do you have a link about trump not paying for the music?

Nothing about that in the link you posted. It indicated that kieth Richards was mad 33 years ago about a gig trump promoted and how it was billed Donald Trump presents the Rolling Stones.

Seems like that's an issue their manager should have negotiated in the contract. Kr needs to be mad at the manager not trump

Kieth has mellowed, the article says, and now likes to president trump.

Nothing about not paying.

So was your comment misinformation or disinformation?

It was certainly dishonest.

Ain’t nothing at all messianic about applying self-confidence, cooperation and mutual aid to addressing human-made disasters. Unless of course you believe that self-confidence, cooperation and mutual aid are bad things. Or that human-made disasters are good things.

What a pessimistic lot our conservatives are. No wonder they chose the losing side in 1776.

Other than that, feel free to find the biblical terminology that Obama’s statement appropriated. It’s clear what Trump’s words, gesturing and mindset meant.

Yes, this is the political equivalent of world war II. The grifters, like the Biden family and the Pelosi family, are outraged that their crimes might be revealed. The crazies, who are allied with them, are going to be exposed as idiots this winter in Germany and UK. I wonder if this craziness will continue?

Instead of "fighting," perhaps Mr. Trump will deign to explain to us why he refused to produce documents subpoenaed by the grand jury, why his lawyers falsely told the court that all the subpoenaed documents had been produced, and why some of the non-produced documents were thereafter moved to different locations within his residence?

While he's at it, he can tell us what was in all these documents that was so important to him, although that's less important to me than why he thought he could defy a grand jury subpoena.
