"A sex party organizer in New York asked invitees to check themselves for lesions before showing up. And the organizers of the city’s main Pride celebrations..."

"... posted a monkeypox notice Sunday on their Instagram account... The virus, long endemic in parts of Africa, is now transmitting globally, and, while it can infect anyone, at the moment it is spreading primarily through networks of men who have sex with men, officials say.... 'Without meaning to make light of this, we have once again have been caught with our pants down by a global pandemic that we were not prepared for,' said Mark Harrington, the executive director of the Treatment Action Group and a long time AIDS activist...  The C.D.C....recently put out a sex-positive fact sheet on social gatherings and safer sex, which, rather than telling everyone to stay home, contains specific tips for avoiding monkeypox such as keeping clothes on during sex and not kissing... ... [Joseph Osmundson, a microbiologist at New York University] and other activists have also been working through their own channels to educate the L.G.B.T.Q. community about the virus — for example, by crafting messages that sex party promoters can distribute to attendees that include photos of monkeypox lesions.'When I talk to my friends in the queer community, we want intervention,' Dr. Osmundson said. 'We do not want monkeypox. The spaces where we meet for pleasure and companionship, we don’t want those to be shut down, number one. And we like going into those spaces with as little worry, and as little risk, as possible.'"

From "As Monkeypox Spreads, a Campaign to Warn the Public Gains Urgency/Be aware but don’t panic, say health officials and advocates as cases of the disease tick upward in New York and around the country" (NYT).

Just as I'm creating a "monkeypox" tag, I'm seeing "WHO to rename monkeypox after scientists call it 'discriminatory'" (WaPo). Discriminatory against who? I haven't read the article yet, and I can't work it out in my head. They can't be worried about insulting monkeys. We have swine flu and so forth, so naming the animals is standard. Does it have something to do with insulting black people? Gay men? Okay, now I've read it. The problem is that the disease is endemic in parts of Africa, and the media therefore tends to use pictures of African patients, and the word "monkey" in photo captions is susceptible to misreading.

We want, we don't want, we want, we don't want. We want to do things that transmit terrible diseases without getting terrible diseases. We want sex, more sex, and don't you try to stop us: the other part of the sexual revolution. Oh, and when we do get terrible diseases, we want other people to pay for treatment and cures.

"The problem is that the disease is endemic in parts of Africa, and the media therefore tends to use pictures of African patients, and the word "monkey" in photo captions is susceptible to misreading."

Even by prog standards that's weak tea: the media "tends," captions are "susceptible" to "misreading." Next, they'll be calling for reparations for Spain after a century of Spanish flu.

Did black people evolve from monkeys, or not? I'm told white people did by Darwin and other noted scientists.

And we all need to worry and pay because "it's going to break out into the heterosexual community any day now!!"

I find it interesting that they only seem to worry about lesions that look like monkey pox. Seems like any lesions would disqualify one from any kind of sex with anyone.

WHO scientists may wish to stick to science and leave the cultural sensitivity to someone else. WHO scientists did a shit job with Covid-19, but they did manage to keep us from calling it the Wuhan Flu. That's a shame since Wuhan Flu sounds like Fu Manchu, and is fun to say.

If WHO scientists think that Africans look like monkeys, then WHO should get better scientists.

So, am I to assume that Pride celebrations involve lots of men having sex with each other??

Do you really think self-policing for lesions will prevent the spread of monkeypox?

Hmmmm.....tell everyone about my lesions, or just go get my rocks off? Lesions, or rocks off? Tough decision.

Talk about double talk, this one takes the cake. There’s no question Mr. Harrington wanted to create a double entendre here which, of course, does make light of the disease. Communication fail but a success if measured just as a joke.

As for the WHO renaming monkey pox to erase a racist trope, isn’t that in itself a racist stereotype? Yes. Yes it is.

AIDS was perhaps the most preventable "epidemic" in modern history. Billions spent, Reagan blamed, yet "don't have unprotected anal sex" would have reduced cases to near zero. Concern for stigmatizing the gay community suppressed this simple cure.

Is Monkeypox next?

Okay then, good luck with that attitude. There's an obvious solution to curbing the spread but it involves some personal responsibility and constraint, which don't seem to be compatible with the LBGTQ community's wants.

So, give them what they want. Not my circus, not my monkeys, not my pox.

I can't resist. The Yahoos in Gulliver's Travels are first described as if they are chimps-- furry, posture not fully erect, tougher claws than ours, etc. They eventually give more signs of being human, and unfortunately poor Gulliver, explaining himself to the Master Houyhnhnm, is forced to admit that modern Europeans are not necessarily better than wild Yahoos, and in some ways they may be worse. After centuries when Europeans pretty much ignored "apes," which were at least somewhat known to ancient Greeks and the authors of the Bible, new studies were being done, particularly of chimpanzees. At the same time, of course, Europeans by sailing around the world probably got more of an idea of how many different "peoples" there were than had ever been possible before. Swift mostly captures some of this in order to make fun of it. He seems to have had relatively little interest in ranking the "peoples" of his time from high to low or anything like that; the big distinction is between Houyhnhnms, apparently a different species but possibly inspired by Plato, and "everyone else."

For all I know, Swift may also have weighed in on whether elephants are more social, in some ways let us say human, than other species.

This seems like a somewhat convoluted post hoc rationalisation. The obvious explanation is that the people who consider the name discriminatory are thinking monkeys = black people, realise what they're doing, and now want to shift blame for their own embarrassing racism onto everyone else.

Perhaps New York can impose a 6 foot distance requirement for social gatherings to prevent the spread of a novel disease? There are supposedly scientific claims that such action taken by governments quickly can save lives and prevent excess hospitalization that overwhelms staff and resources. Perhaps only two-weeks will be needed to flatten the curve, although I suspect police enforced implementation, as NYC did with restaurants, will flatten a few curves much faster.

AIDS redux. I recall someone on Crossfire or the like explaining how it was with a hypothetical:

Say that young men discovered that the greatest sensual pleasure to be had came from sticking carrots up their ears. Unfortunately the pleasure came with predictable side effects--in pain, dangerous infections, loss of hearing.

And instead of discouraging young men from such ill-considered practices the PTB hop to funding research--lots and lots of expensive research, over many decades, under top men--on how to make ear-carrot sex safer, and preferably altogether consequence-free.

What cause could be more important?

Prizzi's Honor, a fine mob fiction story, explained that organizers of sex parties should be attractive but also prudish, in order to instill in potential customers the proper shame necessary to enjoy full participation in such activities. Especially if they are paying to play. Sounds odd, but makes sense if you think about it. This required self-inspection for a vile disease (with negative results completely unverifiable, of course, by staff or customers) achieves this self-shaming of participants quite nicely.

I note the article wasn't about, say, gym memberships or country club swimming pool use. Those don't require the participants be embarrassed to take part fully.

Man, remember "if it saves just one life it's worth it" being used to justify all sorts of things not too long ago? Remember not being able to visit your loved one in the hospital, nor go to their funeral, because it was a public health issue and we were all in it together?
Oh well, that was for *you.* For groups the government actually cares about it's "here're some tips for your sex parties that may reduce the chance of spreading a dangerous disease around--have fun!"

Mark Harrington, a longtime grifter off "AIDS education," made 170k last year from the organization's redundant and silly Hep C and AIDS "education, which we already pay thousands of state and county and federal workers to do.

If Harrington and Fauci had said "stop the damn sex parties" three decades ago and partnered with the few countries that did, millions of lives and trillions of dollars would have been saved for non preventable diseases.

They should die in prison for mass murder.
