"The mathematics books published by the People’s Education Press contain illustrations of people with distorted faces and bulging pants. Boys are seen grabbing girls’ skirts..."

and one child appears to have a leg tattoo. The books are reportedly used in elementary schools across the country, from Shandong province in the north-east to Yunnan in the south.... Some social media users came to the conclusion that the artwork was deliberately bad and provocative, noting a backwards Chinese flag in one instance and some clothing in the colour combination of the US flag... One commenter described the illustrations as 'evil' and warned of a 'worrying' future where 'the education department is infiltrated by the west, and the textbooks are manipulated by the people who have infiltrated the system.'"

From "'Tragically ugly’ school textbook causes social media outcry in China/Education ministry orders publisher to rectify illustrations of children deemed inappropriate" (The Guardian).

Doesn't everyone in China operate under the assumption that if you upset the government moderately your career is over? Also, why would someone 'From the West" want to intentionally make a math book ugly? To subvert Chinese culture?

My plan from way back. Send our students to China and encourage them to stay on as professors. Their work is starting to take hold.

"...people with distorted faces and bulging pants."

Really? Perhaps the distortions and bulges are like the random inkblots some people interpret as pornographic images of their mothers.

The given illustration is problematic, though we have no clue as to context. Many books directed at children have illustrations of children running. But what's not clear without the context is why they're running. Are they scampering in innocent play, or fleeing from the drunken derelict they've just set ablaze?

As bad as it looks, I will need context before I can condemn it. Nor am I certain they are the product of Western infiltration. If it were true, those two boys have no sexual interest in the girls. What they want is their clothes.

I'm curious about what this math textbook was trying to get across with the illustration shown.

Just what the intent of those drawings are is hard to say. Maybe the artist was frustrated and unhappy and was trolling the public. It is interesting, though, that China, like America 20 years ago, finds it hard to admit that the rot comes from within.

Don't tell me that the Chinese are using American textbooks, especially for math. They should be smarter than that.

Feminist "keep girls appointed, available, and taxable" boys or girls who identify as boys (e.g. cis-females, trans/social, trans/neo, etc.) harassing girls. West: It's over. Chinese: Not yet.

Well, the United States’ education system has been infiltrated by Marxists and leftists with a warped sense of morality who have manipulated the textbooks and the system. The difference between the United States and China, is in China those being accused of manipulating the education system are sent to “re-education camps” to learn the error of their ways and in the US the parents who try to undo the damage to their children caused by the manipulators may be deemed domestic terrorists by their government.

Skirt-grabbing and titty-pinching at the least. I can't make out what the blonde tyke in the corner is up to. Something subversive, no doubt.

I would have thought the 'People's Education Press' would be in Berkeley.

Probably a fair number of grade-school kids with tattoos there; Ukraine flags, LGBTQ flags, Antifa fists, etc.

Chinese textbook shows boys and girls getting a little "hand-sy" with each other, while rough-housing. Looks pretty innocent to me. It's a group activity, no sneaking-around going on. If any boy gets too far out of line, he's probably gonna catch a knee in the groin.

In the US, I think lots would welcome that depiction of childhood, as being a lot more normal and wholesome than kids getting indoctrinated at the after-school Gender and Sexuality Alliance meeting, where everything queer is celebrated. Here, have a puberty blocker shot! Don't tell Mom or Dad.

I read the article to see how the West was involved in the illustrations and still don't know. Is it just the creeping perversion coming from the US/Europe? In which case, yes, we'd like to stop that too.

The one illustration with the reversed flag is like that for the same reason there are photos of Paul McCartney playing right-handed. Someone reversed the image because they weren't paying attention or they thought it looked better that way (in the case of the illustration, whatever was in the foreground, ignoring the flag in the background.)

The picture is bad, but not nearly as bad as the description of it. The only thing really wrong is that the boy grabbing the girl around the chest seems to be balding. Is he an ugly child playing or is he a midget sexually assaulting her?

More pictures are at this link - they may better explain some of this fuss, and may especially help people decide whether these were "random inkblots" or lines or instead whether it was more deliberate.

You'd think they'd be upset by all the round eyes. And there's a blonde in the background.

We don't agree on much, but at least you can step back, and see the humor.

In China girls are rare, because of the one child policy. In China, the thing is to have a Son that will care about you and give you a little bit of rice or some food.

The image defines a subset of all the kids: kids touching each other, versus those not in contact.

This is the aftermath of the one child policy.
