"Fewer than 10,000 people are using CNN+ on a daily basis two weeks into its existence, according to people familiar with the matter...."

"The subscription news streaming service... charges $5.99 a month or $59.99 annually.... [T]here is broad skepticism whether there’s enough demand to sustain a stand-alone news streaming service, with entertainment-first options dominating the landscape. Disney+, for instance, posted more than 10 million subscribers on its first day.... Disney’s ESPN+, which offers sports news programming in addition to live event broadcasts, recently reported 21.3 million subscribers. NBCUniversal’s Peacock, which features news programming, reported 24.5 million monthly active accounts in the U.S., more than 9 million of which were paid members."

CNBC reports.

$5.99 a month for CNN is pretty ridiculous. 10,000 subscribers... hilarious.

Gee. I was really looking forward to watching Chris Wallace "moderate" more debates.

The best things in life are free ... such as the Althouse blog.

There is a lot of demand for an honest news service.

There is very little demand for a bunch of oligarch drone hack job garbage.

You can get that for free all over TV.

The paywall goes the wrong way. They ought to pay you.

They call this a "bad bet."

I wonder how long Discovery allows this to continue before yanking the plug.

But probably an accurate bellwether of the value of the information offered.

Its easy to make fun of it now, but wait until people go a few weeks without Jen Psaki. $5.99 a month won't seem so ridiculous then

Like all the 24-hour cable-news channels (depending on your preference), the point of CNN is to have something on your TV in the background all day, or to have something you can turn to quickly whenever there's a major news story. But if you're accessing it through an internet connection, it becomes just another news source, when dozens of free ones are available at any time (and you can find the news you're actually looking for much more quickly).

And like watching CNN go down in flames.

CNN also has its Replay streaming channel on TV Plus that reruns reports from the cable channel.

They've sold zero ads so there are frequent test pattern breaks.

Who wouldn’t pay that bargain price for Chris Wallace?

$5.99 x 10,000 = $59,000 per month. Barely covers Brian Setzer in donuts!

I'm gonna pay for the shit I don't wanna see at the airport.

I wanna know who sold this idea because he could sell ice to an eskimo.

My wife lies to me for free. Paying CNN to spout its lies just ain't in the cards.

So a network few people watch for free (with their cable subscription), even fewer people are willing to pay for directly. Most unexpected.

Why would anyone watch "CNN plus", when almost no one watches CNN?

Who is surprised?

Whose idea was that? Is he still employed? Is he a broadcast-biz "expert"? Have they named any stadiums after him?

Chris Wallace hehheh

How many of those 10k are journalists, wannabe pundits and political advisers and underlings? Probably all.

I wonder if the theme music for Chris Wallace's show is "My Heart Will Go On"? I'm not curious enough to subscribe to find out, though.

There are fewer than 50,000 people in this country who consider CNN an authoritative news source, just as there are fewer than 50,000 people in this country who think Twitter represents reality. As Megan McArdle notes, that number is less than the number of people in the stands for a big high-school football game in Texas. Care less about them and you'll sleep easier.

I am guessing that Jeff Zucker started the creation process for CNN+ several years ago. Fox Nation was launched as a streaming service by Fox News in November 2018 and Zucker had a lot of ground to make up. CNN was doing boffo ratings (relatively speaking) in 2020 with the pandemic and going after Trump when he was politically vulnerable in an election year. Hell, the Chris and Andy Cuomo show was a hit in the spring of 2020. Maybe Chris Cuomo would be a brand name to lure in subscribers to CNN+ and maybe his brother would pop in every now and then. But then, Andy Cuomo started getting dogged by those families of the dead elderly residents of nursing homes who needlessly died of Covid caused by sick people who Cuomo had ordered to be moved into the assisted living facilities. And then, those pesky women who Andy had sexually harassed and/or assaulted while governor of NY started being heard after being quieted for years by Cuomo staff and supporters. But Chris was still good. Oh, wait - Chris was found to be trying to dig up dirt on these women victims of his brother. Hey, they’re Italian and that’s what Italians do to silence people. Oops - Zucker now has to fire Chris. Zucker now has to hire another brand name and Chris Wallace is available. But then it becomes public that Zucker is sleeping with a direct subordinate without reporting it, which is a direct violation of workplace rules even though it’s an open secret at CNN. Zucker is now gone. And now, CNN has a new owner - The Discovery Network. CNN+ gets launched just before the new owner takes over with a lot of bad history and pr behind its birthing process. 10,000 subscribers? Fox News / Fox Nation has to be laughing at the joke that CNN+ has started off as. Chris Wallace has to be wondering how he blundered into signing with them.
