"To find just the right bus, the elder Van Peebles scoured salvage yards. Then he figured out a way to make real steam blow out of the tailpipe jutting from the wall. (The bird droppings on the skylight coffee table were fake.) 'He had this fanciful, wily sense of humor, and a love of the everyday.'"
From "MELVIN VAN PEEBLES/B. 1932/The artist filled his 'Blue Room' with scenes from everyday life and turned them into sculptures" (NYT)(excellent photograph at the link).
I hadn't known about the sculptures. I was familiar with Van Peebles as a film director. I watched his movie "Watermelon Man" on the Criterion Channel last month, as noted here. His movie "Sweet Sweetback’s Baadasssss Song" seems to be much more famous, but I found it unwatchable as we were expected to be highly amused by a woman having sexual intercourse with a boy.

Can you provide a definition of a woman in that context? Or a boy for that matter.
"Thank you, God!"
You priced a vintage VW bus lately? It doesn't even have to run as long as it's mostly rust free and complete. Money in the bank.

The woman is an adult prostitute, and I think the boy is about 10.
Neither of which is an actual definition of a "woman" or a "boy".
I admire a man who doesn't give a fuck.
He did it his way...
Why does the Left always seem to think spiraling downward is progress?
You’re really getting mileage from Animal House, eh- Wince? Lol
And in this economy, too!
Prudish much? But there’s more where that came from, since Bill Cosby supposedly put up $50,000 to get the film made.
I suppose Hogan’s Heroes is unwatchable because it makes jokes about nazis, not to mention Gen. Buchalter’s threats to send Col. Klink to the Russian Front. That show debuted barely 20 years after WW II, but who could get it made now?
I picked up a mint vinyl copy of the soundtrack for Sweet Sweetback's Baadassssss Song at Goodwill for $1. Turns out the album is worth about $50. Melvin's alright with me.
Clicked a link, and another from there, and am now planning to watch Suddenly Last Summer. Reminded what my dad saw in Liz.
