I said it was my sponsor that said it to me... there is just no way I was going to say, at a meeting in Georgia, Al Franken said that. It could have distracted from the message, that's more important imho. There was a chance nobody there knew who Al Franken was/is. But... somebody could have looked him up. I could have also kept my mouth shut. But... I suppose the Althouse blog could be a quasi AA sponsor. I have learned a lot here about how to be a better human being. That's not just saying. Once upon a time, I felt I was pretty accomplished in my field (publishing) because people couldn’t refute the argument I was making by citing the dictionary. I had enough experience to say the dictionary is wrong and could explain why, both in the specific instance and in the larger context of the limitations of dictionary compiling.

Now dictionaries have become so political that any old fool can challenge them. What have we become as a culture that you can’t even trust a dictionary? I blame social media, I blame liberal activists, but most of all I blame the dictionary publishers themselves who, in the words of Glenn Reynolds, are more interested in their reputations within their social group than they are in doing their jobs well.; 10/10/21, 5:56 AM

tim in vermont said...: Went to the movies last night and saw the final James Bond flick. If that's the new 007, well, she is black, and that's the most important thing, plus being female, of course. The best part of the movie though was when Bond... this isn't really a spoiler in a Bond movie, when Bond killed the Obama appointed CIA agent. You can't say he was Trump appointed because the CIA spent the whole time undermining Trump. When it started out in a bioweapons lab, though, I almost wanted to walk out right there. Bond movies are supposed to be about escaping daily life.

Maybe she will be better in future movies, but it looks like they are going to Star Trek the James Bond franchise. But I paid my ten bucks to pay my last respects to a character whose movies I have enjoyed for decades.; 10/10/21, 6:26 AM

Lucien said...: Thinking in general about the Peter Principle it seems reasonable to me that in a well run organization people who do their job well will be rewarded with promotion to a new job that challenges and stretches their abilities, and that success there will lead to more promotions.
Until you finally get promoted to a job that is too hard for you. Then what? The human tendency is to avoid conflict with employees who have been valuable, and it’s hard to fire someone for rising to the level of their incompetence when you are the one who put them in that position.

Demoting someone to the last job they could do well seems like it might work, because most are happier doing what they are good at than doing something frustratingly difficult. But the demoted person may feel insulted that his failure in a higher position has been officially recognized, while everyone in the organization will know that person’s rise has stalled out, and treat them accordingly.; 10/10/21, 7:00 AM
