"Facebook and its family of apps, including Instagram and WhatsApp, went down at the same time on Monday..."

"... taking out a vital communications platform used by more than three billion people around the world and adding heat to a company already under intense scrutiny. Facebook’s apps — which include Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger and Oculus — began displaying error messages around 11:40 a.m. Eastern time, users reported. Within five minutes, Facebook had disappeared from the internet. Hours later, the sites were still not functioning.... Two members of its security team, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly, said it was unlikely that a cyberattack had taken place because one hack was unlikely to affect so many apps at once."

UPDATE: Problem seems to have been solved. Facebook is up. Instagram is up.

Can Frances Haugen account for her whereabouts?

Well clearly the servers became sentient and walled themselves off from humanity.

Feds asked them to because domestic terrorists were using it to communicate?

I can't read your headline without having a smile involuntarily break out on my face.

Lighten up, Frances.

Vital communications platform? Oddly enough, I'm still able to communicate with anyone or any business vital to me.

Further reports speculate that it was done from inside FB. Whether a major screwup or sabotage, who knows?

Per techies that know (Brian Krebs for one) and a network engineer friend who used to work at FB, the cause was an internal fubar’d BGP protocol update (used by network gear to route packets/data efficiently). Tho there could be more to the story, such as other infra broken, and if this was more than just a major screwup. I’m just happy I finally retired last year & no longer have to deal with blivets like this.

Not likely a coincidence.

The great tragedy of all this was that eventually they came back online.

I didn't realize that happened but about that time it felt like the force turned in favor of the resistance...

Silly me. I had thought that, while they were down, the problem was solved.

FB is vital for people who have no real need to communicate nor any ability to do so in a clear, objective and cogent manner.

I do not do Facebook. From what I hear it is a gossip and photo sharing platform. That it has any political significance is a negative testament to the last few totally fucked up generations.
