If I can fully understand, is it the accent that gains approval for the shorts, or the fact that he's a farmer?

I have my exceptions, and one is if it's an activity for which the traditional clothing is shorts — so, shorts are fine for basketball and biking. This guy seems to know what he's doing, so I'm just guessing shorts are traditional at this stage of his line of work.

But I also make an exception for the man who looks very good in shorts, and I think that's the case here. Part of looking good is the demonstration of competence, calmness, and strength.

You're taking away my first exception for that guy. If you didn't wear shorts in Texas... that must have been hotter than where he is (the UK, it looks like). Well, he still gets my second exception!
