"As the Biden administration struggles to care for soaring numbers migrant families, teens and children streaming across the Mexico border, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement sent an urgent email to senior staff Thursday night asking for volunteers..."

"... to quickly deploy to U.S. border stations and tent sites where holding cells are crammed beyond capacity....  The number of these teens and children held in detention cells along the border surpassed 3,500 this week, a record, and the minors have been arriving at a rate that far exceeds the government’s ability to place them in shelters run by the Department of Health and Human Services or release them to vetted sponsors, often relatives living in the United States. With shelters run by HHS short on bed space, thousands of minors are stuck in rudimentary Border Patrol stations awaiting transfer.... More than 130 minors have been waiting 10 days in the custody of CBP, whose steel-and-concrete detention cells are designed as short-term holding cells for adults...."

From "ICE asks officers to deploy to border ‘as soon as this weekend’ to cope with surge" (WaPo).

That headline must have been different before, because the highest-rated comments are: "WaPo, please re-write this headline. ICE is asking internally for assistance. ICE is not calling for Trumpian militant volunteers to rush to the border to rough up immigrants." AND: "ICE should be careful when calling for 'volunteers.' They'll get a bunch of armed white guys with fat guts, no training and an itch to shoot someone who can't shoot back."

Yes, now I see the cached headline. It was: "ICE asks for volunteers to deploy to border ‘as soon as this weekend’ to cope with surge."

The word "cages" does not appear in this new article, but a couple days ago WaPo published "At border, record number of migrant youths wait in adult detention cells for longer than legally allowed":

The Border Patrol warehouse with chain-link holding pens that were decried as “cages” in 2018 has been closed for renovations, but the conditions in the stations are not much better. Young people are waiting in cramped, austere holding cells with concrete floors and benches. Lights remain on 24 hours a day, agents say, and there are few places to play.

Are they in cages now? Were they in cages then? I don't know, but in 2018 the word "cages" was used and the same facilities are currently closed for renovations — perhaps to make them less cage-y — so there's no shift from using the word for exactly the same place. Right now, the "young people" are stuck in "cramped, austere holding cells," but would these be "cages" if only Trump were President or is there some cell/cage distinction that has to do with chain-link fencing?

Sorry to interrupt the Crack thread, but there seems to be a growing international crisis at the border.

In his description, it is clear that these are not unsophisticated gangs that may operate in a territory but don’t control it. They are disciplined, militarized, transnational organizations that wield power over local and national governments to the south of our border. Cartels are not just a U.S.-Mexico problem. Sinaloa is in 54 nations globally, and Carte Jalisco in over 48 countries.

Cartels control the entire 2,000 miles of the U.S.-Mexico border. They have strong links to China to procure the raw materials required to manufacture crystal meth and fentanyl to traffic into the United States. Their ties go so deep with China that there is intermarriage between them. One cartel has hired chemists to find a formulation of fentanyl that has precursors readily available in Mexico to diversify their supply chain.

Biden might just succeed in bringing down the Mexican government as well as the US government. Of course, Biden is not aware of this and is serene in his delusions for reality.

Now, Crack can resume whining.

Ambrose said...

In all seriousness, I don't understand this. Suppose we keep these immigrants under guard for some period of time (a week? a month? does anyone imagine longer than a month?). What happens then? Will some magic solution to immigration appear during that time? Will the Biden administration insist that they return Mexico at the end of that time? To me (unless I'm missing something) those people will be released into the US economy at that time. So why not just release them now?

The Crack Emcee said...

Of course, he's against reparations, so like I care.

mockturtle said...

Michael K, I strongly suspect that the cartels control the Mexican government anyway so they probably won't bring it down. Every day drugs are seized at our border and one wonders at all those that are not seized. Having served on the Grand Jury for my county, I know that drug trafficking is the biggest crime problem here. The Border Control complains that their hands are often tied in regard to how the perps, most of whom are here illegally, are processed. In other words, we are stuck with them.

The only reason I can think of is for the optics. Somebody has weighed it out and come to the conclusion that kids in cages may look bad (and Trump's to blame somehow anyway), but just letting them pass thru (and they are, with only momentary pause) without any show of mediation would look worse.

What I don't understand is why anyone would think that increasing the number of unskilled uneducated people into the populace is a good thing. The numbers both economic and civil put the lie to that. Even readering and Inga should know better.

The Dems have reached the conclusion that the economic harm to the lower quintile of US citizens is a necessary evil that will help them retain power which they think is in the interest of the greater good in the long run. It also provides cheap labor to their mega donors. Win win as far as they are concerned.

There is a shitload of back-and-forth in this thread, but I’m not in the mood to spend half an hour deleting stuff. I’m just going to demand that you all stop. Nearly every comment that addresses another commenter by name is a problem. Stop addressing people personally. Add substance. Address issues. Telling other people they are bad or crazy or whatever is terrible clutter. Some people answer every time they are addressed, and that is bad clutter too. It creates a downward spiral and ruins the comments. You need to stop. Think of other ways to speak. Don’t make it personal, because it causes an echo effect that is manifestly bad.

That worries me too. And Biden just sent a carrier over to the Taiwan Straits. Anyone doubt that the Chinese can track that to the inch?

And can put a cruise missile into its flight deck? Remember, you don't need to sink a carrier, all you need to do is render its flight deck, full of complex, sensitive, catapults, arresting gear, elevators and other gadgets, inoperable.

"Oh, so very sorry, Joe. We were testing a cruise missile and it went out of control."

And while the Americans are trying to decide whether it was really an accident, and we are naked for a day or two, They take back Taiwan.

And what are we gonna do about it? Are we going to war over a country we don't even recognize? With a nuclear armed power?

I'm late to this thread, being at work and such. It might be not acceptable to many, but 300 or so Americans with firearms might secure the border on any 30 kilometer front - far better than the Border Patrol apparently as currently deployed. The migrants are invaders in my opinion. It might suck that their home country is in the crapper, but it doesn't make them our responsibility. Now they arrive, and the Biden Administration is gearing up unemployment, welfare, food stamps, stimulus checks for them. Plus have illegals accounted in the Census for congressional apportionment, and so forth.

North American slavery as it existed until 1860 was the least deadly and degenerate form in the whole era.

The greatest number by far of enslaved Africans went to South America and the Caribbean islands, where conditions were such that a seven year life-span was factored in by purchasers. The American plantation, for all its real horrors, was far from the worst form, and the American slave population was the only one to grow without massive and sustained importation from the sources in Africa.

That's actually a scene in Tom Clancy's novel "Debt of Honor." He was so prescient. And while the novel is about a war with Japan (predicted by George Friedman's "Stratfor"about 15 years ago) but the incident is by a duplicitous China.

But they didn't all say “All Men Are Created Equal” and then renege on it for centuries until we went to war - and then continued it for another century by other means. Nobody else did that - but you.

Wrong. The Romans (not Christianity but Stoicism-steeped Roman jurists) invented the legal and moral principle that “All Men are Equal” — then, over the centuries and centuries that the Roman Empire existed (the longest-lived State in history), no attempt was ever made — nobody really even advocated — abolishing slavery.

Narr,
And often slaves brought to the Northern colonies were 'seasoned' in the Caribbean for six or so years before being traded to the Atlantic English colonies, as they had survived the various 'fevers' that befell newcomers to the Islands. Far more Africans died working, or being transported to the Spanish Main areas than any North American colonies. Can we get Spain and Portugal to put up reparations (or whatever they call it) money? Those two countries worked more Africans to death than any Atlantic Anglo colony, it is not debatable. If England hadn't insisted on the Assiento, they might have had cleaner hands.

Michael, todd, thanks for the comments and corrections.

It's been a while, but IIRC the Roman legal system was growing more liberal and humane in regard to prisoners and slaves long before Christianity became dominant there.

As to abolition in Late Antiquity, the notion became irrelevant as the former distinctions between free- and bondsmen disappeared into serfdom for almost everyone.

Re: China. I don't think they'll move until some other crisis or "crisis" has our extremely limited political bandwidth concentrated on something elsewhere. Crack is maintaining that if you wear cotton, you have somehow exploited black slaves. But just exactly how would you measure that benefit? As an economist, the first place I would look is to historic cotton prices.

From Cotton Prices More Stable in Recent Years", a 2002 article I found on line:

Longer-term, U.S. cotton prices literally have been all over the board throughout the 200 years for which prices are available.

In 1800, prior to the invention of the cotton gin, cotton sold for 37 cents per pound. While that might seem like a low price today, it's the equivalent of $2.89 per pound in 1998 dollars, according to Frank Weathersby of Affinity Cotton Trading.

Cotton sold for as little as 10 cents in the early 1800s and again in the 1840s before jumping to $1.26 per pound during the Civil War. In the aftermath of the war, cotton prices fell as low as 6 cents per pound in the 1890s.

World War I brought another jump in price, but not to the levels seen in the Civil War. The Great War (as World War I is sometimes referred to) only pushed cotton prices into the 30s.

During World War II and the years that followed, cotton prices remained in the 30s except in the mid-1960s, when synthetic fabrics became the rage and sent prices for cotton tumbling into the 20s. When farmers began to fight back through investments in Cotton Incorporated, prices jumped to that 50 to 70-cent range.

What the data show is that the Civil War's disruption of cotton supply greatly increased the price, but it fell back again when the war (and slavery) ended. And it has not increased much since then. In fact, if you take account of inflation, cotton is cheaper now than it's ever been. No doubt the price of cotton in the 1800's would have been higher if not for slaves, but the biggest driver of falling prices over time has been better technology. The cotton gin was not a one-off invention, it was subject to many improvements over the years. There's also been increasing automation in the industry to the point where very few people are now involved in producing more cotton than ever.

So any benefit that nonwhites obtained via lower cotton prices from the institution of slavery has long since disappeared. And if you want to argue that slavery destroyed black culture and families and is thus responsible for blacks lower incomes today, you have to explain (i) why the African nations from which slaves were taken aren't doing very well economically, and (ii) why black families were stable and black incomes were gaining on white incomes up until the advent of the welfare state in the late 1960's. Thomas Sowell has written quite a bit about this.

OK, Crack, you can call me a racist now.

Being sold to the sugar plantations in the Caribbean was a death sentence. But because they were so expensive and the running of a cotton or tobacco crop was so labor intensive blacks in America were generally treated better.
