The BBC is reporting that it may have been bandits other than Boko Haram, and some students are saying that most of the kids were able to flee, with possibly only as few as 10 remaining in captivity. Supposedly ransom negotiations are underway.

They don't distinguish, in the slightest. "Boko" literally means "fake" or "fraudulent", and applied to education, means any education which is not Islamic in nature. Whether you're talking an Ed.D. from the University of Delaware, a Ph.D. in physics from MIT, or a BA in liberal arts from Thomas Moore College, it's all "ilimin boko" (meaning "fake education").

Boko Haram is only the short-form name. The full original name is Jama’atu Ahlis Sunna Lidda’Awati Wal-Jihad (People Committed to the Prophet’s Teachings for Propagation and Jihad). However, in 2015, they pledged allegiance to the Islamic State, so their most recent name is the Islamic State in West Africa. But since then the group has splintered (as jihadist groups are wont to do), so who knows what moniker they go under these days?

First, the word "boko" in Hausa means "fake", and has no relation to the English word "book" at all. An ignorant idiot invented a baseless folk etymology, and a bunch of gullible idiots in the media spread it.
Second, the Arabic word "haram" does not and never has meant "unclean", it means and has always meant "forbidden". The idea that it means "unclean" is based on ignorant people overrelying on facile analogies to Jewish dietary law.
