"There was one glaring omission from Michelle Obama’s 20-minute Democratic National Convention speech Monday night — Kamala Harris."

"That’s because the former first lady recorded her rousing speech before Joe Biden selected Sen. Harris of California as his running mate. The speech was delivered remotely like all others at the DNC because of the coronavirus pandemic, and The Associated Press reports it was filmed before Harris was named last week as Biden’s VP candidate, indicating the choice was so close to the vest and down to the wire that even the Obamas were not in the loop."

The NY Post reports.

So they'd rather have us believe that what was served up last night was pre-recorded a week ago — it was that stale! — than have us think that Michelle Obama didn't want to say anything about Kamala Harris.

Moreover, that would mean the favorable press could also be given sufficient lead time to place themselves on the same page.

My prior comment on the Michelle Obama "Fatal Attraction" post:

Did you notice it seems all coverage of Michelle Obama's speech seems uniformly headlined...

"Michelle Obama assails President Trump"?

At least we know how the DNC instructed the press to cover her remarks.

Post got it from AP. AP doesn't even cite a source for the information that the speech was recorded before the VP announcement. It says: "In keeping with the virtual nature of the convention because of the coronavirus, Mrs. Obama’s remarks were recorded before Biden’s announcement last Tuesday that he had chosen California Sen. Kamala Harris as his running mate. But Mrs. Obama wrote lengthy posts on her Facebook and Instagram accounts praising Harris, a Black woman born to Jamaican and Indian parents, after she joined the Democratic ticket."

That bit about Facebook and Instagram is obviously there to anticipate and answer the question whether MO has something against Harris.

I can understand having pre-recorded speeches for many aspects of this convention, but a week ago is a lifetime ago right now. Why pre-recorded so far ahead? Why not 1-2 days ago? Why not coordinate it with the VP announcement?

Further, it was ANNOUNCED 6 days ago and you didn't loop in the leaders of the party - and yes that includes Obamas - before the announcement?

Sounds poorly coordinated to me.

The DNC convention is so important that people should watch, but it is not important for the Obamas to participate live or Biden to attend in person. Inspiring, no?

Best wig she’s ever worn for TV. Lame “speech” that came off as a list of same-old same-old about Trump. Boring. Tiny biden sign on the otherwise empty shelf was a cute touch. Pablum presented poorly, this year’s version of convention er excitement. [gag]

In the middle of a pandemic--when all the good citizens are staying at home--when would the first lady find a spare moment to re-record her message with less than a whole week's notice?

What's sort of fascinating is even though she did not know who the candidate was, she did know that the candidate was going to be a woman, and almost certainly a person of color. With that advanced knowledge you would think she would have waited a day or two to record her speech so that she could included the selected VP in her remarks. If this selection were as historic and significant as the media and the Biden campaign want people to believe--certainly Michelle Obama would have coordinated her speech with the Biden campaign, right?

I see one post on her Instagram about Harris. It's a photo of Harris hugging two little girls. (No social distancing, no masks.) The theme of the comment with the post is that it's good for little black girls to be able to see someone who looks like them running for office.

"I’ve been thinking about all those girls growing up today who will be able to take it for granted that someone who looks like them can grow up to lead a nation like ours. Because @KamalaHarris may be the first, but she won’t be the last."

Her FB has the exact same post. All the posts are the same on both platforms. As far as I can tell, that one post is all she wrote. It is lengthy (for social media), but it praises Harris for being dark skinned more than it praises Harris.

You know what else was missing? Facts and truth.

Oh sure there were a few statements that were probably factually accurate, like joe losing his wife as a young senator, etc.

But so many falsehoods and BS it’s shorter to list the truths....

Does anyone believe Michelle “loves this country”? She said previously that Obama being President was the first time in her life she was proud of her country (or some BS like that). How can you love a country you’d NEVER been proud of?

I wouldn’t watch her speech, but I read through the transcript. Ugh. Total Garbage.

Very passive aggressive, snub in person, then get your lacky to throw some sunshine up Harris' skirt on facebook.

I note the genealogy in Harris' description, Why call her a Black woman, they have told us she is Jamaican/Indian, which contains more information.

The AP fact checked Michelle and I am SHOCKED that they told the truth (or even dared to fact check Saint Obamas wife!!)

AP – Michelle Obama assailed President Donald Trump on Monday for ripping migrant children from their parents and throwing them into cages, picking up on a frequent and distorted point made widely by Democrats.

She’s right that Trump’s now-suspended policy at the U.S.-Mexico border separated thousands of children from their families in ways that had not been done before. But what she did not say is that the very same “cages” were built and used in her husband’s administration, for the same purpose of holding migrant kids temporarily.

A look at her remark in the keynote address at the opening night of the remote Democratic National Convention:

MICHELLE OBAMA, on Americans: “They watch in horror as children are torn from their families and thrown into cages.”

THE FACTS: The reference to cages is misleading and a matter that Democrats have persistently distorted.

Trump used facilities that were built during the Obama-Biden administration to house children at the border. They are chain-link enclosures inside border facilities where migrants were temporarily housed, separated by sex and age.

At the height of the controversy over Trump’s zero-tolerance policy at the border, photos that circulated online of children in the enclosures generated great anger. But those photos — by The Associated Press — were taken in 2014 and depicted some of the thousands of unaccompanied children held by President Barack Obama.

When that fact came to light, some Democrats and activists who had tweeted the photos deleted their tweets. But prominent Democrats have continued to cite cages for children as a distinctive cruelty of Trump.

As if doing a "virtual" convention isn't challenging enough (and from what I hear they haven't met that challenge very well, although I sure ain't watching), how on earth do you allow your party's most popular standard-bearer (certainly its most beloved woman) to show up in a pre-recorded speech that's "stale" by a week, and thereby ignore the most exciting thing to come out of the Biden campaign in months?

And we should be surprised by this, why?

People on one particular end of our political spectrum can do or say anything without fear of being criticized or outed.

They can be lazy; they can be deceitful; they can twist things out of shape; they can slough things off. It really doesn't matter, because the mainstream media has their back.

In the immortal words of that oh-so-eloquent speaker, Michelle Obama< "It is what it is."

Or, if you don't like Michelle's statement, you can go with this one: "What difference at this point does it make?"

Yancey Ward said...

Like I wrote last night in the penultimate thread- I expect Biden's acceptance speech will be inter-laced with video montages to cover the editing breaks which cannot be hidden these days.
