"The next Lost Cause? The South’s mythology glamorized a noble defeat. Trump backers may do the same."

A column at the Washington Post by Caroline E. Janney. She's a history professor at the University of Virginia.
The original Lost Cause will never be replicated. It articulated a fully developed set of beliefs about slavery, honor and region, grounded in the experiences of a slaveholding republic. Trump and his followers do not have such a coherent ideology, nor do they enjoy the kind of geographical monopoly that the Confederates possessed. But their arguments are animated by some of the same tactics that allowed the Lost Cause to thrive for more than 150 years, which may help Trumpism, too, live on past its political moment....

It’s easy to imagine Trump supporters looking backward at his presidency as a golden era, touting efforts to forestall illegal immigration, protect White suburbs and battle China — not unlike the ways Lost Cause boosters reimagined the antebellum South. Just as former Confederates relied on the press and popular culture to disseminate their myths, we might expect cable news outlets and right-wing websites to perpetuate his charges of “rigged elections.” MAGA and Trump flags will fly on private property along major interstates or highways, just as Confederate battle flags do today....
There's a lot of ideation about the Trump who won't go away. I've got a fantasy of my own. Want to hear it? It's a sweet little fantasy, and I hope it will make everyone feel good. So... Biden wins in November, but Trump doesn't believe the result was fair and square, just can't get his head around it.

When Inauguration Day comes, Trump is hanging on in the White House. But his term is over, and Biden has been sworn in, so Biden is the President, and now Trump is a private citizen wrongly holding onto the place. What to do?!

Should the Secret Service firmly but gently usher him out? No, Biden says. He is my house guest! Trump stays on, sleeps in the White House, gets his meals, watches TV and tweets, and he and Biden have conversations, and they kind of enjoy each other, debate, trade presidenting tips, talk about their grandkids. America looks on, feels heart-warmed by the odd couple in the White House, and love is all around.

Yes, to socialists, freedom is a lost cause. Aside from that, you could fill a stadium with what she does not understand.

By the way, she's actually saying cable news outlets and right wing websites will perpetuate his charges of 'rigged-elections'?

This coming from the same media and paper that spent 3 1/2 years perpetuating the 'if not for the Russians, Hillary should have been President'? They do it still- today. If there were any real Journalists! left at WaPo they'd have the story of the century right there in front of their big, latte-filled faces. The attempted coup of a duly elected President.

Yes...let's talk about Trump voters and old Southern mythology and Lost Causes. I cannot wait for November. I cannot even imagine the prone, fetal positions taken up by the media in this country when Trump is in for 4 more years. That alone makes it worth voting for Trump.

If, as I think likely, Trump wins reelection, it's really going to get ugly. These people are so convinced Biden's got this, his loss would in itself prove that Trump cheated.

Because they're never wrong. If they find no evidence for this, that will be proof of how deep the conspiracy goes.

I have a sweet little fantasy, too. The GOP wins the House and the Senate and Trump is re-elected easily. The Democrats say I guess we were wrong and relegate Pelosi, Schumer, Scihiff, and Nadler to the Committee on DC Oversight. Omar and Talib are defeated and AOC becomes a Reaganite- strong national defence, low marginal tax rates, and ordered liberty. She starts quoting Edmund Burke.

Has journalism permanently changed, or is this all just a manifestation of Trump Derangement. The Washington Post has an article quite frequently that is little more than speculation about what Trump must be thinking, or feeling, or planning. "Trump supporters worry...." "Will the 25th Amendment be in play?" Why doesn't a responsible writer do a retrospective take down of all the speculations that have been wrong?

2. Why would the WP print such unfounded speculation?

The South doesn't have a love of slavery or even the Civil War. While Confederate military heroes are still revered, it is because the South was invaded by the North and these men were fighting against the North, not fighting for slavery.

Only 1 in 5 families in the South owned slaves, so why were sons from all the other families fighting? It certainly wasn't so they could buy a slave.

I find it morally reprehensible that liberals are able to label the South as racist.
I guess that makes this woman a bigot.

NPR is also dredging up the War of Northern Aggression, even as we speak, pointing out that some of those naughty white people of 150 years ago were naughty and that about 1/2 of white Americans have a "klansman" in their family tree* according to the author of "Life of a Klansman: A Family History in White Supremacy" because for liberals it will always be 1870 or 1929 or 1955.

*150 years ago ~= 6 generations = (64+32+16+8+4+2 = 126) ancestors, therefore (1/2)/126 ~.3968254 % of people were in the KKK. Oh teh horror.

Mega Corporate Press Hid The Fact That This RACIST President Was a Democrat

This summer has seen a historical reckoning with how the country views the past. Yet when liberals and Democrats are the target of reassessment, journalists get nervous. Whether it’s the racism of Planned Parenthood’s founder or Woodrow Wilson, the media would rather you not ask too many questions.

Speaking of Wilson, back in June, Princeton University decided to remove the 28th President from its Public Policy School. All three networks covered this development, but they ignored one key fact about the Confederate-loving, KKK-defending politician: He was a Democrat.

These people do not get it. The "cult of Trump" that supports him as a person consists of about a handful of people. For everyone else, he is a means to an end.

May be since John Lewis's passing, this will happen when Trump is reelected. After all, Lewis did boycott THREE Presidential Inaugurations.

The hard partisan actions of the last four years by the Democrats shocked me. The attempted coup was beyond the pale. And the amount of Chamber of Commerce Republicans that have done everything they can to derail the Trump agenda, has been amazing. And still no recess appointments - Thanks McConnell!

The example of Senator Warner having back channel communication with a Russian Oligarch, and Christopher Steele? The FBI and DOJ attempted framing of Trump for Obstruction of Justice. What type of Banana Republic have we become?

As for the "Lost Cause" it came about, because the Southern Leadership had to justify secession and sending all its young men off to fight and die in a needless civil war. They also had to justify losing a war, they probably could have won. So, the war was recast as a noble effort to defend states rights, and Robert E. Lee was made into a major figure, along with Stonewall Jackson, Jeb Stuart, etc. Jeff Davis was pushed into the background, and all his cabinet members and the Confederate Senators more or less airbrushed from the picture.

Every confederate soldier became a noble crusader defending the Poor South from the marinading Yankees, instead of unwilling draftee or a poor sap fooled by all the propaganda. Of course, all the deserters and Union volunteers were also forgotten.

We are well aware of the “unmitigated disaster[s]” of Trump’s Presidency: Sedition sponsored by the Democrats and their pet leftmediaswine; unlawful, illegal overreaching by Obamajudges to thwart Trump’s policies; corruption of federal law enforcement to perpetuate the Russia hoax and, finally, Covid 19, as a result of which Democrat governors with the highest death rates on the planet can blame Trump for their homicidal activities. On the flip side, Trump has exposed the nearly unfathomable depth of depravity among Democrats and their consorts which will remain invisible to their useful idiots and intellectual morons, but will not be forgotten by the normals.

I responded off the top of my head, "Not statist enough, State-fucker?" I apologize for the intemperate language, and I don't know if I qualify as one of his hardcore defenders, since I always think of Trump as more of an ally against the most loathesome people on Earth, the "liberal" Hive. (And by "liberal" I mean of course "tax-happy, coercion-addicted, power-tripping State fellator.") But, pray, Feder, let's say you could somehow alter the course of history and change the outcome of the last presidential election and see to it that "Felonia von Pantsuit," not Trump, was elected. What would you like to have seen Queen Cacklepants done differently? Hmmmm . . . I wonder: would the changes be in the dirrection of more statism and less liberty, or the reverse? Please don't keep us in suspense!

Ah we've now suffered through almost four years of the tattered legions of Hillary lovers mourning the loss of St. Hillary to that barbarian Yankee Trump--she was from Arkansas --for a while at least. Oh if she had just won, there'd be free 7 Up and rainbow stew for all!

Well we've seen that movie--and this historian/fantasist from UVA predicts there'll be a second reel when Trump loses? Well whether he wins or loses there'll be a replay of one side or the other wailing and grashing their teeth in the street. I'd prefer that the wailers be members of the Lost Legions of Hillary, but we shall see.

The South could never have won. Their plan was to run out the clock by electing a Southern-sympathizer into the White House. They didn't have the men nor the materials to actually win on the battlefield.

The North won because of three generals: Grant, Sherman and Montgomery Meigs. Grant and Sherman had the guts to keep on fighting, even after losing a battle or two. Grant believed in never going backwards and giving up ground he had already won. Sherman was a master of maneuver who would flank the Southern armies in the Mississippi theater. Montgomery Meigs was the Quartermaster General who kept them supplied with food, ammunition and other material. There are pictures of the sea of Conestoga supply wagons. The Northern troops never missed a meal and always had shoes and uniforms. The Southern boys had forage for all of that, do their own sewing and were often walking bare foot.

What kind of moron thinks Trump voters admire him only for "efforts to forestall illegal immigration, protect White suburbs and battle China".

They admire him for his massive success in growing the economy right up until the Kung Flu hit, which they expect to resume as soon as we can get people back to work. Despite the silly prof's nasty little dig about "White suburbs", Trump voters are proud of the fact that black unemployment was the lowest on record in February, and they hope it will set new records in the next year or two.

They also admire him for his foreign policy successes: he's the first president since Coolidge (?) not to start any wars, and he totally crushed ISIS. Why does no one talk about the fact that ISIS took over half of Syria and a third of Iraq under Obama's watch, and was holding open slave markets at which they sold Yazidi women as sex slaves? Now the few ISIS members left alive are hiding in caves along the Syrian-Turkish border, afraid to even stick their heads out for fear of American drones. And all at a very low cost in American (or allied, for that matter lives) - under Bush we lost thousands of troops in the area, but were more or less winning, under Obama we still lost hundreds while losing and letting ISIS kill, rape, and enslave hundreds of thousands, but under Trump we've lost maybe dozens while winning a decisive and complete victory. And the silly prof either doesn't know or doesn't care.

Someone up above predicted that if Trump wins, the Democrats will take it to the Supreme Court. That’s a lock. It’s obvious that there will be massive problems with counting all the mail-in ballots. New York hasn’t finished counting the ballots from a congressional primary election that took place about a month ago. The opportunities for mistake let alone mischief are vast. The courts will be busy for months sorting all the claims out and it’s very likely that one or more of these cases will end up in the Supreme Court. Since violations of local election law are theoretically not reviewable by the Court, the Court will have to be inventive in finding ways to hear those cases as it did in 2000.

False. Very, very false. The British Government was on the verge of recognizing the Confederacy and intervening in the Civil war in the fall of 1862. Had Bragg's invasion of Kentucky succeeded and Lee had been able to inflict a more decisive defeat on Pope, the Confederacy would've survived the war.

doctrev said...

Uh, are leftists actually brain-dead enough to think Trump keeps people he doesn't trust as security? If he didn't have the power to restructure his Secret Service detail, he would have simply removed them from the role and built a new organization. Because he's had a private army for longer than most of you have been alive, and if he didn't have top notch security he would have paid at least $50 million total in ransom money for Ivanka by now. Barron would have murdered his kidnappers and returned home under his own power.

It's the same reason the military theoretically trying to invade New York would have been suicide- at least it was, until the mayor's office bizarrely made mortal enemies of the NYPD. I think Mike Bloomberg is scum, the type of traitor who should have been expressly prohibited from holding American citizenship and political influence, but even I know he has a heavily armed security detail. Leftists are now openly hoping for a coup to remove the President- which is reasonable, because I'm hoping for a coup to hang them like it's Laundry Day- but that makes them complete fucking RETARDS for alienating and attacking the men with guns that they need for success, never mind legitimacy.

Nope. The Confederacy's only chance was that Sherman would not take Atlanta. Jeff Davis blew it when he removed Joe Johnston because he could not stop Sherman. Lee was done after Gettysburg.

Narr said...

Define "on the verge" of recognizing the Confederates, please. And big counterfactual certainties are easily matched by others, for instance--

Had Bragg's invasion of KY been less successful and Lee been killed at Second Manassas, then the war would have been a complete defeat of the Cornfeds by 1863/64. Easy as pie.

And besides, if the British gummint HAD declared war, it may have led to riots and worse among the largely pro-Union middling and working classes (some of whom after all went on strike to support Abolition in our OTL*) of Great Britain. The less said about Nappy the Little in this context the better, but there was also Russia-- the Tsar's gummint openly supported the Union cause too.

What ifs . . . if we had some ham we could have ham and eggs, if we had some eggs.

Electing the Dem candidate in November, 1864 was the only path left to a CSA for nationhood since all hope they had of of a winning a military victory died on May 10, 1863 , in time for Lee to blow it all at Gettysburg two months later. The CSA had won all its victories due to a Scots Irish Calvinist General named T. J. Jackson beginning when he won First Bull Run with his 2000 man brigade holding Henry Hill like a stone wall against three massed Federal assaults. His death destroyed the South’s morale and hope.

As an Asian American Republican in Southern California, I also couldn’t pull the trigger for Trump. Instead I also cast my vote for Johnson. But the overwhelming hatred and attacks from all quarters has motivated me to vote straight Republican come November. I have relatives and friends in SoCal who are independent. They are frightened by the images of cities burning, and outraged by the blatant hypocrisy of the press. They’ve told me privately they are voting Trump. These people are watching Fox News and Tucker Carlson, something I never would have thought possible. Will Trump win? Biden is clearly the favorite as of now but I wouldn’t be shocked at all if Trump wins again.

Certainly, AA is not one. But what's fascinating about many White Academics is the amount of White-shaming they engage in and the fact that they are ashamed of being White.

Side note, Madame La Professeur...I know it's a scenario in your head about Trump and Biden being in The White(?) House together, but, I think, for the good of the Old Republic, Trump would accept whatever results and leave.
