Fantastic! "U.S. jobless rate unexpectedly declined to 13.3% in May."

Headline on the front page of The Washington Post. The article is "Unemployment rate drops to 13 percent, as the economy picked up jobs as states reopened/There are hopes that April’s unemployment rate of 14.7 percent will reflect a bottoming out of the economy. With some 30 million workers collecting unemployment benefits, the labor market has been upended."

The NYT article is "Unemployment in U.S. Unexpectedly Fell in May/Hiring rebounded in May, defying expectations, with 2.5 million jobs added, the Labor Department said": "Economists had forecast the unemployment rate to increase to as much as 20 percent, after it hit 14.7 percent in April, which was the highest since the government began keeping official statistics after World War II. But the unemployment rate dipped instead, with employers adding 2.5 million jobs, after more than 20 million jobs were lost in April."

AND: "Dow futures up more than 500 points after jobs report shows surprise jump in payrolls" (MarketWatch).

ADDED: Trump on March 23:

"And you will see the economy skyrocket once this is over. I think it's going to skyrocket. It's a pent-up demand. It's a built-up demand. And I guess you really have to say: Who knows? But I think it's going to be a tremendous day when we win...."

I watch jobs reports pretty carefully and just want to say: economists predictions are complete bullshit. They literally don't know what's actually going to happen with ANY degree of consistency month to month. When I think about day to day "science" I look at the forecasting of economists and meteorologists and just say: If you can't admit you can't model a week or a month out with high confidence, don't pretend.

What this is saying is that economists couldn't detect a swing of 5+ million jobs WHILE IT WAS HAPPENING prior to a jobs report coming out with actual data. They have no actual "on the ground" measurement tools.

Meaningless tripe.

What the Democrats and their storm troops in the streets hoped for was to spread despair not only inside the cities they control, but psychologically outside of those cities as well.

But with the rest of the nation moving on economically, what they control are deficit-plagued, crime-ridden, smoking ruins.

And their hopes for a federal bailout of their Blue State profligacy in the form of federal stimulus is dying before their eyes, replaced with a populist tax cut. Tell me again how Pelosi is a political genius.

Trump’s virus payroll tax cut ‘crushes’ Pelosi plan to aid illegal immigrants

In the battle over another coronavirus stimulus, President Trump’s push for a payroll tax cut easily tops House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s $3 trillion package that includes giving illegal immigrants amnesty and healthcare, according to the latest McLaughlin & Associates survey.

Pollster John McLaughlin told Secrets that the Trump plan “crushes” the Pelosi package approved by the House but now being ignored by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.

1. To be used when economic news is good and the president is a Republican.

Looks like they’re going to make it. My gym is reopening, except we have to use their app to schedule a time slot, thanks to our moron governor Ralph Northam. And I see that the Winchester Medical Center is now scheduling elective surgeries, so laid off nurses will be back to work. All of these are good signs.

"Unexpectedly fell... Defying Expectations"

Our economic system has so many inputs, knobs, and dials that predictions about the future are most often proved wrong. Economists find new things and behaviors that affect the economy all the time. This is why Economics is a Soft Science, similar to Psychology and Sociology. Exactitude and objectivity are elusive.

Using those words, "unexpectedly" and "defying", is political propaganda.

My data is purely anecdotal:

I live in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. Most small private service businesses were closed from the end of March until the first week of May. Pretty much everything was reopened by mid May, and by my observations so far, nothing has closed permanently....yet. So, the report isn't all that surprising if I extrapolate my experience out to all the rest of the country that did reopen in early May, which was a good large segment of the country. In other words, the bottom was late April, not May.

Will it continue in the coming months? I don't know, but my fingers are crossed. The riots of last week and this week will be a damper, but only in the blue areas of the country. Those people continue to shit in their beds, so I don't expect them to change their behavior until Trump wins reëlection in November- perhaps when that happens, they stop cutting off their own noses.

You got experts with worse records than flipping a coin, and they report to politicians who are obviously power addicted idiots, and they make decisions for us all? Isn't that clearly a really bad idea? We just let them do that about every aspect of our lives for the last 3 months. As soon as we got out from under them, you see who knows what they are doing.

The Left is now claiming that 4+ million of the employed counted were actually laid off. I have been digging into this claim the last hour or so since I first saw it on Zerohedge, and here is my interpretation that no on that site has contradicted with any evidence:

The BLS management had wanted the survey takers (these are people who do the actual statistical sampling surveys to determine the overall employed/unemployed/looking for work/not looking for work data sets) to count as unemployed all people being paid by their employer, but not actually doing any work on site or at home. Now, if you will remember, the CARES act was deliberately designed to help employers continue to pay workers they did need working during the COVID shutdowns. In short, the CARES act created a large class of workers- at least 4+ million of them if you believe Paul Krugman's deranged rants this morning- who were on 6 week+ paid vacations directly paid by their original employers. You can quibble all you like, but those 4 million people are still technically employed by their companies just like you are when you go to Yosemite on a vacation from work.

My interpretation is pretty fucking simple- the BLS management was trying to get the sample takers to count as unemployed everyone on these extended paid vacations, but the field workers of the BLS were still using the normal methodology for counting paid vacationers as employed.

Next month, this won't be such an issue since even more of the country will be reopened, and there will be far fewer of these paid vacationers.

It might take 6+ months to find the real damage of the shutdowns. Like I wrote above about Oak Ridge- most closed businesses reopened here- I can't find a single one anywhere I frequent in town that closed permanently- at least not yet. That tenaciousness of entrepreneurs might be the saving grace here- they don't give up easily, even if you burn their business to the ground protesting something.

There is going to be a distinct divergence in the country, though- red areas were reopened a month ago, blue areas are still largely shut down. This even applies to the states run by Democrat governors- the red areas of those states have started to ignore the edicts handed down from the bunkered governors. The difference in economic vitality will not be good optics for the Democrats in November. The Democrat governors will probably start to see the light this month and realize their own political fortunes are more important than getting rid of that bad orange guy. Even Cuomo understands that looting out NYC was a mistake.

It's time I put on record something I've been thinking for a couple of weeks now: the shape of the recession-plus-recovery is not going to be the letter V, it's going to be a checkmark: ✔. (Hope the HTML comes out right.) The upward-sloping right side is going to be just as steep as the downward left (so far, that's a V) but twice as long (that's what makes it a checkmark).

Of course, this was not an actual recession caused by economic factors, but a totally artificial, intentional, temporary suspension of the economy for medical reasons. It's like one of those medically-induced comas doctors sometimes use to treat the seriously ill: I'm guessing the recovery from a medically-induced coma is generally a lot quicker and more certain than it would be if the coma were caused by disease or a blow to the head. Can an M.D. confirm or deny?

If Biden or any other democrat manages to defeat Trump in November, then the shape of the economic curve will immediately turn into a different symbol, the mathematical right ceiling: ⌉. (Again, I hope that comes out right.)

So, right about now, 99% of the democrat base of Howard's and Inga's are running full speed ahead with the stories of how the economy has gone over the cliff and the truth will never catch up.

But remember, the Washington Post claims to have tweeted out this Fake News "by accident", because of course they did (wink wink)

The Washington Post had to undo it's hoped-for echo-chamber TDS headline.

Ha. Ha-Ha. Ha-Ha.
