I still watch "Homeland", but the show is shadow of itself from that first season. This season so far is just bad. No other way to put it. I thought it still good until the 2016 election result mucked up their plot line for that season that was in production just prior to the election itself. When Shelob lost the election, the writers tried a 180 to salvage their plot plans, but it just made a mess. Those who watch the show will know what I am talking about.

William,

Well....Ozark really wasn't that far off. I have a bipolar brother. When they go manic, they get impulsive, impossible to reason with, they have flights of fancy, they imagine they are invincible...it was believable to me.

What wasn't believable was that he was on a med that caused impotence. None of the newer bipolar meds do that. I am not even sure that lithium does that. That was a stupid plot point that didn't need to be in there. Bipolar people go off their meds all the time when they feel good. EVERYONE goes off their meds when they feel good. There doesn't need to be a reason. That guy wore my ass out.

But . . . how certain are you of this? We are in a non-linear region of the curve. What happens if the Chinese demand for American debt ceases, through policy or market forces?

I have no way of quantifying level of certainty. As for Chinese demand on American debt ceasing, that would mean nothing to us.

Yancey,

Yes, they were all set to have Hilary in charge! And then, boom. So they made their female president as close to their imagined Trump as they could. It all went south.

They have gotten to wrapped up in the characters and lost the story. The story was what was engaging--it was a realistic (ok sort of) look at what Islam is capable of. Now it is just melodrama, America bad, Muslims misunderstood, blah, blah, blah.

Have you seen Fauda? Bay Area Guy and I have been talking about it. Israeli. Much more realistic. And not that you care, but the male characters are kinda hot.

Yancey Ward said...

I just finished binging the 3rd season of "Ozark" on Friday night. I wondered about the bipolar guy, too, but then I don't have any real experience with such people. I did find it odd that he became child-like in his thinking when he went off the meds, and had meant to read up on the disorder. Of course, he wasn't in the manic phase during the last trip with his sister- that was the depressive phase.

I have seen "The Princess Bride" so many times, I know what the next line is pretty much in the entire film. This is a film people will be watching 50 years from now, like "Wizard of Oz"- it is simply timeless.

Well, who is watching The Wizard of Oz today? Neither of my nieces have seen it. They haven't seen The Princess Bride Either. And I bought copies of both for them. They just have no interest in watching either.

Yancey,

I found the bipolar brother in Ozark totally believable. Maddening, and thus, believable. Whether depressed or manic, the pathological thinking is striking. Globalizing. Catastrophizing. Those are part of depression. (I know from personal experience.). The manic phase is terrifying, when it is someone you know and love. As I said earlier, the only think that struck a wrong note with me was the idea that he went off his meds because he was impotent. People go off their meds. No reason. I feel good. I don't want to take medicine. Whatever.

The only meds that people take religiously are pain meds. Because, duh.

Ozark spent waaaaaay too much time on the brother. What should've been a 2.5-episode subplot became the entire raison d'etre for the show.

Stupid.

Also, why would you fire a gun into someone's head at close range while that person is standing next to people you don't want to have killed accidentally by a refracting bullet?

stephen cooper said...

My cats always liked having me around.
I simply do not believe those people who say cats want to be left alone.

Also and trust me on this ---- I hated the Princess Bride.

I watched it with some friends who loved it and I asked them, at the end - what is the point of making fun of fairy stories, as if they are beneath you? Why not just tell a real story without always acting like you are making fun of people who enjoy stories?

And they were all like, you don't get it, do you.

And I let them win the argument, as I almost always do, because I do not care if I am right or wrong.
The only time I argue as if I really cared is when people tell me I am an idiot for saying God loves us all.
In those arguments, I feel the way about God that a big brother feels about his little brother when ill-behaved kids are bullying him.
Not that God needs my help, of course.
And of course I always feel so so sorry for anyone who would even come close, even just rhetorically, to thinking they can persist in their bullying enough to try and bully God. YOU HAVE NO IDEA HOW STUPID so many people can be, unless .... well unless you have lived long enough,

and then of course you would be surprised at how many people know so little and have so little understanding .....
Just as I am surprised that there are people who live with cats who, the people think, are thinking in their cat hearts that they do not want the peoples around as much as possible.
OR MAYBE MY CATS WERE SPECIAL FOR WANTING ME AROUND AS OFTEN AS POSSIBLE
probably not, though, I am not special, so why should my cats have been special?
My dogs, on the other hand ----- dachshunds, schnauzers, chow chows, poodles, coonhounds, Tibetan terriers, Bichons, PBGVs, optimates .....amazing, amazing, amazing. I miss them so much.

Stephen Cooper,

I did not see The Princess Bride as making fun of fairy stories. Not at all. But rather, as having fun at adult's expense, who would try to explain away all the magic. The magic is there at the end, when Andre the Giant catches the Princess as she leaps.

And...it was a joke about the cats. Lighten up, Francis.

Claire Danes played crazy pretty convincingly in the first few seasons, but then it got to be schtick. I thought the craziness of the brother in Ozark was more of a plot device than a clinical description of the illness. Well, live and learn. At any rate, it was painful to watch him make increasingly stupid decisions.... What's the opposite of plot armor? You just knew he was going to die, but I expected he'd go out with a bigger bang....Ozark was intermittently well written, but if you stare too long in the plot holes, the plot holes start staring back at you.

Oh Stephen, the Francis joke was from the movie with Mr Ed. But I won't call you Francis again. It was just a gentle joshing to realize that people sometimes use humor.

I sometimes imagine our pets joking back. What would they laugh about, thinking about their humans? I think that would be very funny. I can imagine a couple of cats gossiping about their humans. I think my cat would laugh at my hair in the morning. And he would laugh at me having to stretch and do yoga to keep flexible--when it comes so naturally to him. And he would laugh at me wasting my time on vegetables.

Dogs? Hmm. Dogs would laugh at us being so serious. And worrying about what dogs eat!!!! And our insensitivity to SQUIRRELS!

I am not sure what horses would find funny about us. I do adore horses. It is a lasting pain to me that I never got to spend much time with horses after high school. Such beautiful, phenomenal beings.

Pigs are extremely smart animals. Inga thinks I am a pig. I did not take that as an insult.

For a short-ish binge, I *highly* recommend the Netflix series Kingdom. I finished it yesterday. Zombies done right, gorgeous production values, politics, loyalty, deception. Only 12 episodes in the first 2 seasons, and the turn it takes at the end bodes well for season 3.

FWIW, Stephen C., I'm with Anne-I-Am about Princess Bride. There is a tremendous amount of affection built in, both between the Grandfather and the Boy, and between the Grandfather and the story. The whole point of the movie is the Grandfather teaching the Boy the inherent value of stories like that, and it's a beautiful story of two people who fell in love, were separated, and then, against all odds, were re-united. There is a tremendous amount of love in the story, too, like the love of Inigo for his father, and the love between Inigo and Fezzik (Fezzik would just not give up on Inigo). I think you should give it another try, Stephen. It seems to me it would be right up your alley.

My cats are also extremely happy to have humans around all the time, and I am very happy they are here. They always cheer me up.

Anyway, it’s turned out that Sweden’s approach hasn’t been the unmitigated disaster predicted by, well, thousands of its own scientists. Now, to be fair, I’ll note that, on a per capita basis, Sweden has had more deaths than the US, a rate of 152 per million vs. our 123 per million. We’d have ~50,000 deaths to date if we had same rate—but there’s no direct evidence that the stricter measures taken here are responsible for that difference.

Seasonal flu data bundles influenza and pneumonia. Very few flu deaths are laboratory confirmed. They are estimated using statistical models.

Have you noticed that the high at-risk population - the old, the frail, the sick - continues to die, reportedly as a result of the virus? The Boston Globe has, they've published a "shocking" article about how the rare illness of the young is growing!

Meanwhile, Marty Walsh (Boston Mayor, no relation) tells everyone to "knock it off" with the outdoor activities. Yesterday was one of those glorious spring days in Boston. Lots of people out and about. Most that I saw were practicing social distancing, just not in their homes.

I note that the new metric or standard for determining when we can all go back to work is comprehensive testing of all citizens. Regularly and repeatedly. Classic goal post moving and rules changing mid-match. We were told we needed to flatten the curve, prevent the overwhelming of the healthcare system. Now we have to test everyone - an impossibility. Marty says we need to stop the virus completely before we can come out of hiding.

Too much dishonesty among government leadership.

Have a good day! I'll be on zoom meetings pretty much from 8:30am to 6pm. Days tend to fly by, and are remarkably the same from one to the next.

Recommended - "Kingdom", on Netflix

Korean historical drama with zombies.
Well done.

But a note on the setting - the conflict in that show is, on one level, that of a Korean (one assumes Joseon period based on the costumes, but it makes no specific reference that I can tell) royal succession complicated by the "deep state" of that setting, the officialdom of the court and their security services. The prospective, legitimate new boss being unlikely to preserve the sweet status quo.

How apt, I thought. US politics since 2016 has been dominated by exactly the same conflict. This is, to be sure, not a rare situation in Asian history. China, Japan and Korea were regularly, in their various historical cycles, driven into internal conflict by the growth of court cliques and castes into their own power centers. The mandarins and the eunuchs and the court ladies and aristocratic clans that ran things (various combinations in different times and places) were, between them, usually bad news.

The US has been going through what might as well be an Asian imperial court crisis, as if it were in the latter days of the Ming dynasty.

I mentioned this sometime last week. We already know the process. Look at any SPF swine farrowing facility.
Property is gated, only persons with appointment allowed on property. Operational actions are isolated from patient areas.
Patient areas are shower in, shower out. Foot baths are used anytime persons travel between areas, add hand/arm washing stations. There are more processes.
The point is, we have decades of success keeping pathogens out of facilities.
I have a close friend that is on the covid floor at our local hospital. He was worried to start, but then his logical mind kicked in, went back to his training, education, and experience. Now he is calm, and recommitted to provided his patients the best care, and attitude they deserve. I don't ask for details, and he doesn't volunteer, but he has shared, every death involves extreme age, or 2 co mordities.

This lock down should have never happened. The experts were wrong. Statistics keep trending the same way, and Covid is just like the flu. Who knew?

I support the states beginning a staggered reopening with some restrictions (e.g. no large gatherings indoors) still in place. More antibody studies need to be carried out across the country. But I think we should avoid building narrative that it was all hype, a hoax, not a big deal, just like the flu, etc. There's still too much we don't know about the virus to reach those kinds of conclusions. People in high-risk categories will likely need to continue practicing social distancing, we shouldn't rule out the possibility of another wave of new infections. For those who experience serious illness but eventually recover, we still don't now what potential long-term impacts on the body could occur.

Well, that's somewhat true, but "...borrow indefinitely..." is a bit over the top.

My comment about "somewhat true" is that whenever people talk about "Debt Capacity" they only use one aspect to service "Debt" - "Income". Yes that is true "Income" is required but not the only availability to service debt in the USA. I will refer you to the 'Balance Sheet' of the USA. You do know that the Federal Government owns massive amounts of real estate, which can be sold to reduce the "Debt" to more manageable levels. Hell, in certain Western States the Feds own most of the State.
