"President Donald Trump's campaign manager deleted a tweet featuring a dramatic photo of Air Force One at the Daytona 500 after users pointed out that..."

"... the shot was from President George W. Bush's visit to the NASCAR race in 2004, not from Trump's visit on Sunday."

CNN reports.

I'm going to use my old tag "the Air Force 1 photo op." The "the" is confusing here. The tag was created to cover what was easily recognized at the time as the Air Force 1 photo op. Do you remember it?

Here's my one post on the subject, from May 9, 2009, linking to the CS Monitor article, "Aide resigns over Air Force One fiasco -- Biden not involved"
"Once news broke that an Air Force One jet buzzed Lower Manhattan for a photo op, do you think Obama aides checked to see where Vice President Biden was?"
Why bring up Biden like that? I have to infer that he was the butt of jokes at the time. But who remembers that now?

Anyway, what can we say about the use of Air Force One to show off the glory of the United States presidency? Whether Brad Parscale tweeted the right photograph or not is a piddling matter, but the use of the plane for visual messaging — as opposed to mere transportation — deserves some attention, and I just want the analysis to be the same whoever the President is.

It's got to be so unpleasant for anti-Trumpsters to see the man showing up at the big NASCAR event. This sort of attack must be irresistible (but I've got to assume they'd stress the charisma and unifying power of a Democratic politician who ventures into NASCAR territory):

ADDED: When is the last time anybody won the presidency without winning Florida? You have to go back to Clinton in 1992 and, before that, Kennedy in 1960.

Yet another example of a perfectly normal thing that presidents of both parties have done for years suddenly becoming nefarious when Trump does it.

This is why it is so hard to run against an incumbent President. They swoop in on AF1, arrive in a full motorcade, to his private theme song “hail to the Chief”. Or just makes announcements leaving from or arriving back to the WH busily, with it in the background. The problem here is that Trump is a pro at self promotion. You can’t take AF1 away from him (or his “beast”), because he needs it to travel, and campaigning means travel, and his opponent should be traveling just as much, if he wants to win. And you can’t deprive the President of the right to try to get re-elected. For one thing, AF1 is his aerial command post - on 9/11/91, Bush went to AF1, and they flew around the country for awhile, while Cheney went into the WH bunker. AF1, in times like that, is National Command Authority, which is why you can’t take it away from the President.

It's fairly tame criticism, probably because there's not much to criticize about the President showing up at a sporting event.

I wonder if she had to spend time trying to think of the words to use to communicate that something bad was happening but still be accurate as well...the "official apparatus of government"...which, in this case is a car, right? or I guess also Air Force One? But those things, a car, a plane, they aren't just "official apparatus of government", they have practical, everyday use, which is transportation. Which is how we all get around, it's not just people in government. So, like I said, tame and kind of silly. Oh, well, I need to get ready for work, which I will reach in my "official apparatus" of going to work.

It's called incumbent advantage. And everyone uses it. At least with the Presidency, it will only get them 2 terms.

The Senators and Congresscreatures use their incumbency similarly, not with The Beast Presidential Limo, but in countless other ways, to keep their positions for decades. For their entire working careers. This was never what was envisioned by the Framers, in who's day people left their livelihoods to actually do some public service, then went back to their lives just as soon as they could. No one wanted to stay in festering Washington DC any longer than they had to back then.

Today- to call it 'public service' is laughable. They go there to increase their income tenfold, make bonzo connections for their later years, get a nice cushy life in one of the highest cost of living areas in the world, and above all- relish in their power, such as it is. This is why Term Limits is necessary.

Maggie Haberman just catching on to this? And it was Trump's use of the car that caught her? Stunning.

They fly over football games because flyovers are cool. As far as the squandering goes, pilots need stick time. You can fly in circles or you can fly over the Daytona 500 because it's cool.

I wondered why somewhere they didn't just crank the sound of jet engines over the stadium audio, then claim is was a 'stealth fighter' flyover. Stealth.

Back around 1973, Richard Nixon flew in to Ontario Airport in California for a visit. Our HS band was there on the tarmac to play "Hail to the Chief" and a couple of other marching band tunes. A bit before his arrival a staffer came by and gave our band director a piece of campaign music called "Nixon Now." One of our horn players was so incensed that he put a McGovern sticker across the bell of his baritone.

The band director sent said horn player off the bleachers and dropped him from the band. The player's dad, who worked in some capacity at the ACLU, sued the school and won his son's reinstatement. There were hard feelings, but eventually they were smoothed over and we got back to music as usual.

Funny thing is, I don't think the horn player was wrong. It's one thing to be called in to welcome a sitting president that you hate (and he did hate Richard Nixon), and quite another to be forced to participate in campaigning for him.

Not just the President, of course. It would be unfair if his opponents could travel around the country campaigning against him. So, as you suggested, ban campaign travel. That’s about the only way to do it fairly. But then the President has his WH, and his Rose Garden. Showing him in front of the WH is also unfair, and since we need to be fair, that means banning Presidential candidates from posing in front of their homes, or probably in famous places.

Not going to happen, of course. Highly unconstitutional.

"The President has no choice but to fly on Air Force One."

There was an exception. Back in 1973, President Nixon took a commercial airline flight (call sign "Executive One") to "set an example for the rest of the nation during the current energy crisis" and to "demonstrate his confidence in the airlines".

Normally, US presidents do ride in military aircraft. "Air Force One" is the call sign for any Air Force plane that carries the president. They established that call sign after confusion between the presidential aircraft and another with an identical flight number almost caused an accident back in the 1950s. The presidential helicopter is operated by the US Marine Corps, so its call sign is Marine One. Before that, it was operated by the US Army and the call sign was Army One. When George W. Bush rode in a Navy S-3 Viking to land on the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln, the call sign was Navy One. That was the only time that call sign has been used. Should a US president ever ride on a Coast Guard aircraft (it hasn't happened yet), the call sign will be Coast Guard One.

I think they looked at using the beast to start the race and the laws of physics got in the way.

OTOH, a Corvette convertible, with PDJT in the front seat holding an American Flag. That is what they should have done.

WhoKnew,

I knew a guy who flew helicopters for the Army at Ft Lewis.

You often hear criticism of the cost of rescue operations when some climbers get in trouble on Mt. Rainier... but let me tell you, the guys at the pointy end of this particular spear absolutely loved it. What could possibly be better than a real life training mission?
