"US military opens investigation after West Point cadets and Annapolis midshipmen appeared to flash white power hand signs during the live broadcast of the Army-Navy game."

The Daily Mail reports.
At least two cadets and one midshipman were seen making the hand symbol. The hand sign is formed by joining the the index finger and thumb in a circle while extending the other three fingers, as in the traditional 'OK' symbol. A similar gesture is used in the so-called 'circle game,' in which the person making the gesture tries to trick someone into looking at it, and if successful gets to punch the onlooker in the arm. However, the ambiguous nature of the gesture is part of the appeal to extremists, according to the Anti-Defamation League.

That’s why you guys have to keep coming up with new bullshit to accuse people you don’t like of. So you can feel superior. Nobody who doesn’t use Twitter all the time even knows that this is supposed to ba a “white power” hand gesture. But the OK sign has been around forever and is used almost universally. Some trolls on 4 chan don’t define our culture, except for people like you, that they can jerk around on a chain at will.

If you think about it, there have been pretty continuous big leftist protests since the anti-globalization riots in the 1990s (or was it 80's- 90's) those morphed into anti globalization/anti war, which morphed into Anti-Scott Walker, which morphed into Occupy, which morphed into Resistance/Antifa/Extinction Rebellion....and now anti-Boris Johnson I guess.
I agree there is some movement, and there must be funding for it somewhere.

tim maguire said...

MayBee, it’s actually kind of a funny story. Of course, we all know it is and has been the ok symbol, which some kids use in a punching game. Some people on 4Chan, for a joke, spread a rumor that it is the White Power symbol. Some excitable people on twiter ran with it abd started calling people out. Some number of White Power people, hearing it’s their symbol, but not hearing how it came to be that way, started using it as their symbol.

Viola! The ok symbol is now the White Power symbol.

MayBee said...

Tim Maguire- it is kind funny! But also pretty scary. Anything can be turned into anything! And I don't mean the 4Chan people....I mean the people who then take it seriously. Stop fearing the online left so much, people!!!

MayBee said...

rhhardin said...

Whites, as far as I can tell, don't give blacks a moment's thought. They're far from being white power guys. They might suggest trying to fit in would be a good strategy for blacks, when it comes to their notice. It lowers the inefficiency of trades if you can rely on trust, so those trades work better for everybody. Otherwise they might not be worth doing.

William said...

I think the three pointer hand gesture is meant to signify the ultimate ambiguity of hand gestures. I'm not sure if it mocks people who think it means something or if it really means something but not what you think or if it indicates membership in some dark brotherhood of Trump voters. The signal will remain ambiguous until Trump uses it.

William--Trump uses OK all the time, as do Obama, Pelosi, AOC, etc.

I even know a joke I first heard in 1964 where a chimpanzee uses it to express "fuck you."

This a 4Chan prank of the first order. That anyone is nattering about this is a triumph of meme creation. Those cadets, however, have some real maturity and judgment issues.

I hope they second Michael Horowitz to the investigation. If anyone can get to the bottom of their motivation, he can.

Leland said...

I saw a lot of immaturity in the video, including what Clyde noticed, which I thought was the most egregious. It was clear the cadets were messing around with the reporter, and the dropped trash behind the reporter clinched that to me. That's poor behavior best remedied with lost weekend privileges and some extra push-ups.

Young people like to test limits, especially young men. I hope these institutions have the wisdom to take these young men aside and remind them of their purpose and what they represent. They should highlight the point by providing them ample time to contemplate their transgression while walking tours for about 100 hours. Finally, it should be explained to them that if they ever show their ass like that again in public they’ll be bounced out of their respective academies.

What this should not be is an opportunity to force the entire corps of cadets and midshipmen to endure more racial, sexual harassment and sensitivity training. That action is what prompts this nonsense in the first place. Let’s hope the Sup’s and the Comm’s of both the Naval Academy and West Point have the wisdom to understand that.

But, of course, this makes them highly desired at and suitable to serve at Pentagon.

"They are not fit to command. "

Those who disobey and dare are those who are fit to command.

Those who obey best are fit to occupy desks at the pentagon.
But that is not where wars are won. And it is amazing at how easily replaced such desk-sitters are.

History is an enemy of grand ideas of military orderliness.

Thank you for the Nazi pronunciation there

It’s the French pronunciation (they’re the ones eager to surrender to the Nazis)...

Skookum John: Sadly, the Navajo Indians have. What they call the "Whirling Logs" theme was abandoned in World War 2, but before then it was frequent in Navajo jewelry, weaving, pottery, and basketry. My grandfather lived in Flagstaff in those days and collected some Navajo art that can't be displayed or worn today, unless you don't mind being thought of as a Klansman.

I occasionally get colorful scotomata that always remind me of common designs in Navajo art.

Migraine symptoms are white supremacist.

Eh, they're at the Army/Navy game. Maybe the one time of the year they get to let their hair down, so to speak.

If this is an isolated incident, so be it. The fact anybody is focusing on it at all is more disconcerting to me.

Never forget. “I divide my officers into four classes as follows: The clever, the industrious, the lazy, and the stupid. Each officer always possesses two of these qualities.

Those who are clever and industrious I appoint to the General Staff. Use can under certain circumstances be made of those who are stupid and lazy. The man who is clever and lazy qualifies for the highest leadership posts. He has the requisite nerves and the mental clarity for difficult decisions. But whoever is stupid and industrious must be got rid of, for he is too dangerous.”

Charlie Currie and josephbleau did either of you serve in the armed forces? If so, let me know what rank you achieved and where if any combat experiences that you had.

From what I've read, since I couldn't watch the game, Army players 55 and 31 refused to shake either the President's or SECDEF'S hand.

UCMJ Article 88- Contempt toward officials
UCMJ Article 133- Conduct unbecoming an officer and a gentleman.

133 hasn't received gender neutral language yet...

In any event, since that was broadcast and witnessed by many, such conduct is a clear violation of the UCMJ.

When's the court martial or non-judicial punishment?

SDaly: The "peace" hand sign with fingers making a "V"? that means victory over minorities (or simultaneous digital penetration of vagina and anus), etc.

You are sadly behind the times. The two-finger salute means that there are only two genders. Of course, it's still sort of Nazi. Get with the program, comrade. Do you know your other hand symbols? I think you need to study Babylon Bee.

After commenting on this in a few Facebook groups and other blogs, I've come to a conclusion.

Liberals are easily duped. They actually believe the AOK signal used for, well, forever, is a white supremacist thing. Nothing can dissuade them from this view. Even if you point out articles on teh 4chan trolling - it's white supremacy! Because someone said so!

Facts, history, pictures of blacks both recently and in history using it to mean "AOK" are completely immaterial. It's a racist symbol and that's all there is to it, it's not up for debate or discussion.

I was told on Facebook I wouldn't recognize white supremacy if it hit me in the face. I was very tempted to write back: "You're right, I wouldn't. I've never seen or recognized any anywhere. Is there a handbook you recommend since you know so much? How about a toll free number for advice on how to notice it? Or do you give lessons?" I was tempted, but I suspect that amount of sarcasm directed at a liberal would result in the dreaded Facebook banhammer.

The ever watchful media is 100% to blame for this nonsense being taken seriously. Well, by those who take it seriously. I seriously think that the military officials launching an investigation ought be fired for loss of confidence in their ability to lead and command.

Frankly, these people are not taking well the utter repudiation of their la-la-la-ing about their orchestrated "browning of America" (their words) in the weeks leading up to the election. There are videos on You-tube of declaring victory too soon. The consequences are usually some dude losing a race or crashing his bike, but the delaying during returns, holding up reporting on clear outcomes in MI, WI, etc., and open sobbing on the day after this past presidential election are the first-and-away classics. So much whining and gnashing of teeth and complaints by some idiot that gets cameras pointed at him by other idiots about whitelash. (It's a stupid play on words: from backlash, to blacklash, to whitelash (I guess; it's pretty stupid) by the same dummies / word-worriers that get bent out of shape when someone uses the perfectly useful word niggardly to describe a cheapskate, such as the ADL and SPLC.

The traditional "OK" signal is held hand UP, whereas this guy is holding his hand DOWN. I have never seen anyone give the "OK" in this way. I don't presume to know what he wanted to communicate, but it is not "OK."

BTW: I had no idea what the Circle Game was. I know the song by Joan Mitchell, but I never played the game or knew anyone who played the game, and I had never heard the term "the circle game" anywhere but Mitchell's song. However, in looking it up, I found an article that describes it as a game "every child played." Well, not this child, and no others of my acquaintance.

Robert Cook may have identified a new distress signal. Or, he is richly deserving of the mockery that has entered his brain due to the effects of light bouncing off some fellers' hands and crashing into his eyeholes. Better go get those photons washed off.

Which, of course, makes it "not a power sign", since the 3 upraised fingers are the "W", and the loop-and-forearm are the "P".

So they're flashing a "bm" sign, not a "wp" one. Maybe they're indicating that they need to use the restroom?

Most often, I forget about these posts quickly. This time, I noticed the latest comment, last evening ("just kids all wound up at the big game"), and a memory of reading Evan Connell's Son of the Morning Star about the spectacular and in some ways quite unsympathetic career of General George Custer flashed through my head. I seem to recall a number of acts of foolishness during his West Point career.
